Senior Balance Exercises And Dynamic Stability

Senior Balance Exercises And Dynamic Stability

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com Senior Balance exercises compared with young adults who perform stability exercises have been researched by medical professionals to determine how we respond to changes in our support surface and how our balance abilities perform during cognitive tasks. Mersmann F, Bohm S, in their recent study, Young and old adults prioritize dynamic stability control following gait perturbations when performing a concurrent cognitive task, looked at the difference between old and young participants who were challenged in their balance abilities and mental abilities. Each subject adopted a position of standing balance. They then received a quick jolt to the surface they were standing on. The researchers measured their balance reactions. In the next phase of the study, they again assumed a balance position. Next, they were given a mental task to perform during which another jolt was directed to their balance platform. The researchers measured their balance abilities and their cognitive abilities. The researchers found that the number of errors in the cognitive task increased significantly in both age groups.  Additionally, the cognitive task performance declined following the perturbation in both age groups. Consequently, they concluded that postural prioritization occurs independent of age in response to unexpected gait perturbations. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Senior Balance Exercises And Dynamic Stability

The above research report informs us that balance exercises are essential for both young and old individuals. By practicing senior balance exercises, folks over the age of 60 years old can improve their balance and reduce the risk of falling. Additionally, younger people can improve balance for sports activities. The research study also points to the idea that when we are engaged in cognitive tasks like remembering a phone number or having a conversation with someone, our balance abilities are diminished by the mental distraction. For those folks who have balance problems, that is an essential point to remind us to stay focused on the sense of touch between our feet and the ground when we are in a setting that challenges our stability. Now, there is an excellent opportunity to practice a balance program with an expert physical therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.
