Nimble Jack And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For All

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
We all remember the nimble Jack from our early nursery rhymes. Perhaps jack practiced his senior balance exercises to enhance his nimbleness. See more at    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now We hear of Jack's excellent steadiness:
Jack be nimble
Jack be quick
Jack jumped over the candlestick
For older adults, the ability to be nimble diminishes with age and often leads to debilitating falls. Medical researchers tout that one in three older adults fall every year. Many of us know family members who have fallen and we cringe to think that the next fall might be the big one that leads to a wrist or hip fracture, ending up in a nursing home or assisted care facility.  Medical researchers as well as healthcare professionals like doctors, physician assistants and physical therapists all agree that aging individuals can improve their overall steadiness by consistently rehearsing senior balance exercises.

Senior Balance Exercises To Improve Steadiness

Even Jack Needs to practice senior balance exercises in his old age. JACK MAY have been nimble in his youth, but in later years it has been noted that senior citizens need to practice specific equilibrium routines to enahnce steadiness.  One such stability routine is tandem standing where you stand with your feet in a line in a heel to toe manner.  In this tandem stance position, you will cahllenge your balance reactions at your feet and ankles. In his later years, Jack could have also done an easier stability routine as a precurser to jumping the candelstick. For example, he could have stood one one foot and swung the other foot forwards and backwards to mimic a static and dynamic balance exercise. You can learn these and other senior balance exercises by following the direction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

3 Well Known Senior Balance Exercises

Familiar Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Knowing which senior balance exercises  to practice and how to perform them is the first step towards improving stability and reducing falls in older adults. Please see more information at http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Many of us are familiar with the concept that as we age we lose muscle mass and strength in our leg muscles, we become stiffer at the ankles and less able to adapt to various ground surfaces and we experience a decline in our balance systems, leading to a greater incidence of falling. In fact, medical researchers suggest that one in three adults in the aging population (over sixty years old) will fall each year. Often those falls result in debilitating injuries like wrist and hip fractures or head injuries. With that in mind, healthcare providers like doctors, physician assistants and physical therapists recommend that aging individuals perform at least three basic senior balance exercises.

Which Senior Balance Exercises To Do

There are three basic senior balance exercises that older adults can do on a regular basis to increase stability and reduce the risk of falling. Those equilibrium routines include:
1) Single Leg Standing- In single leg standing, the senior citizen stands on one leg ( near a counter or table) for about twenty seconds, repeating that routine on each leg three times.
2) Tandem standing- In tandem standing, the older person stands with their feet in a line, in a heel to toe position. Hold that tandem stance position for twenty seconds and do three repetitions in each direction.
3) Tandem walking- With tandem walking, the aging individual walks along a line, in a heel to toe fashion for about ten feet and five repetitions.
You can learn how to perform these and other senior balance exercises to do in the comfort of your own home by following along with the instructions from a qualified Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

A Warm Goodbye To Pat From Exercise For Balance

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comPat Summitt, Anton Yelchin and Other Notable People Who Died in 2016
Pat summer was one of the most inspiring and most wonderful people in sports history. Today we learned that Pat Summitt, a Hall of Fame, former Coach of the Year and the winningest coach in NCAA basketball history, died at 64 after a battle with early onset dementia. Summitt, who coached the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers for 38 seasons and won 8 national titles along with 1,098 wins and only about 200 losses battled dementia with grace and dignity. Summitt was diagnosed with early onset dementia in 2011 and her declining health forced her to step down from her position a year later. During her illustrious career as a coach, she served as one of the great ambassadors of women’s basketball and a dear mentor to thousands of women athletes across the globe.  As a player, Summit won the silver medal with Team USA at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. In 2012, Summit was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPY Awards. Not only will it be hard to ever come near matching her winning record, it will be impossible to match her drive, work ethic and positive influence she had on thousands of individuals who came in contact with her. Even recently, Summit encouraged other individuals with Alzheimer's to not be afraid of it. We at Exercise For Balance want to acknowledge the greatness of Pat Summit and celebrate her life and achievements. We would also like to continue to help older adults who struggle with Alzheimer's, dementia or any other illness that contributes to problems with balance to improve their steadiness and continue with as active a life as possible through participating in fitness programs that include senior balance exercises. Please see more information at     http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Summer Concerts With Senior Balance Exercises

Enjoy Summer Fun With Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
With the warm Summer days upon us, it is time to practice senior balance exercises to enjoy outdoor activities safely and without risk of falling.  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  One of the great joys of Summer is taking in a wonderful outdoor concert, whether it is live jazz, a string quartet or a big band reduction of the Boston Pops. Additionally, the Fourth of July is just around the corner and it will be time to listen to the famous 1812 Overature on a grassy lawn with fireworks and accompanying crowds. To stay safe and avoid falling with crowded venues or with trying to navigate grassy areas, it is recommended by healthcare professionals like doctors, physician assistants and physical therapists to practice specific senior balance exercises to maximize your footing and reduce the risk of a potential fall and injury from a fall.

Senior Balance Exercises For Summer Concerts

Participating in daily senior balance exercises will enable you to develop strong and fast balance reactions that will help you adapt to the challenges presented by concert going. Getting to the concert may involve walking on narrow pathways. To boost your steadiness getting through narrow places, you can perform a tandem stance routine where you stand with your feet in a line, touching heel to toe. This tandem stance position will increase the speed and strength of your balance reactions at your feet and ankles. Furthermore, to be able to walk on uneven grass, first rehearse single leg standing exercises where you stand on one foot at a time, which increases overall stability with all movement activities. You can learn how to rehearse a series of senior balance exercises that will advance your steadiness abilities by joining in with the instruction from a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

3 Levels Of Senior Balance Exercises

Progressions Of Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Practicing senior balance exercises  every day is a very effective way to build stability and reduce the risk of falling for older adults. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Medical researchers have compiled statistics that show that aging individuals have a fall rate of one in three. That means that one in three older adults over the age of sixty fall every year. To drive the point home, that means that most of us with parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles or neighbors who are over sixty are likely to know someone who experiences a fall this year. Often times these falls result in debilitating injuries like wrist fractures, which makes it difficult to get dressed or cook meals, or hip fractures, which makes it hard to get around. The good news is that medical researchers have proven that senior citizens who practice equilibrium routines on a regular basis decrease their risk of falling and sustaining injuries from falls.

Know Which Senior Balance Exercises To Do

senior balance exercises come in all shapes, sizes and difficulties. Knowing which stability exercises to do and how to correctly progress your balance program is very important. You can break down a balance exercise program into three components.
1) You can start with basic static STEADINESS routines like standing on one foot on a solid surface like hardwood floors, tile or carpet.  Be sure to stand near a sink or counter to hold on if you need to.
2) You can progress your steadiness program by combining static and dynamic balance activities. For example, you can progress to standing on one leg and swinging the other foot forwards and backwards or side to side.
3) You can further advance your balance regime by working on balance equipment like a balance board or BOSU.
For additional instruction, follow along with the directions from a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Vestibular Disorders And Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises For Folks With Vestibular Disorders

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Vestibular Disorders are common among older individuals and practicing balance exercises can help to reduce the risk of a fall when the symptoms of vertigo, dizziness or imbalance flare up. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Vestibular Disorders can effect the inner ear system called the Vestibular System. The vestibular system includes the parts of the inner ear and brain that process the sensory information involved with controlling balance and eye movements. If disease or injury damages these processing areas, vestibular disorders can result. Vestibular disorders can also result from or be worsened by genetic, age or environmental conditions, or occur for unknown reasons. One recent large epidemiological study estimates that as many as 35% adults aged 40 years or older in the United States—approximately 69 million Americans—have experienced some form of vestibular dysfunction. A healthy vestibular system, on the other hand, supplies the most reliable information about spatial orientation. Mixed signals from vision or proprioception can usually be tolerated. For example, when sitting in a car at a railroad crossing, seeing a passing train may cause the sensation of drifting or moving, and feeling a soft, thick carpet underfoot as opposed to a solid wood floor can produce a floating sensation. However, compensating for vestibular system abnormalities is more problematic. Vestibular dysfunction is most commonly caused by head injury, aging, and viral infection. Other illnesses, as well as genetic and environmental factors, may also cause or contribute to vestibular disorders. When an individual struggles with a Vestibular Disorder, they experience symptoms of vertigo, dizziness and disequilibrium. Those people with Vestibular Disorders can help the symptoms by rehearsing balance exercises every day.

Balance Exercises For Vestibular DisordersPractice Balance Exercises At Home

A daily dose of balance exercises is a wonderful remedy for those with Vestibular Disorders. One of the first steps to reduce the effects of dizziness, vertigo and imbalance involves learning to focus on the sensory input from your feet to the ground beneath your feet. By concentrating on the proprioceptive feedback from the feet, you can enhance steadiness and override symptoms of lightheadedness. You can learn specific stability techniques in the Exercise For Balance DVD, which teaches you how to align your body weight over the midpoint of your feet and focus on the sensory input from your feet and ankles, which enhances the processing of the information in the balance system in the brain. additionally, you can follow a step by step progression of balance exercises developed by a knowledgeable Physical Therapist.

Cellular Aging And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Aging Changes

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
As the inevitable march of aging comes out way, there are a few things you can do proactively to maximize your health including enjoying a regular routine of good nutrition, Physical fitness and practicing senior balance exercises. Please see more information at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now As we age, we all go through predictable changes at the cellular level Including weakening of the muscles, decreasing visual acuity and hearing and diminishing balance abilities. In the broadest sense, aging reflects all the changes that occur over the course of life. You grow. You develop. You reach maturity. To the young, aging is exciting—it leads to later bedtimes and curfews, and more independence. By middle age, another candle seems to fill up the top of the birthday cake. As time goes on, it is hard not to notice some harmless cosmetic changes like gray hair and wrinkles. For most of us, middle age also is the time when people begin to notice a fair amount of physical decline. Even the most athletically fit cannot escape these changes. Take marathon runners, for example. A recent medical study found that record times of marathon runners increased with age—aging literally slowed down the runners. Although some physical decline may be a normal result of aging, there are a few notable activities that will help you stay mobile and healthy into your later years. As an example, by performing senior balance exercises every day you can enhance your steadiness with movement activities and reduce the risk of a fall and injury from falling.

Senior Balance Exercises For Later Years

To stay active and healthy in your twilight years, it is essential to make a habit of practicing senior balance exercises on a daily basis. Simple equilibrium routines like standing on one foot can increase the strength and speed of the balance reactions in your feet and ankles, which translates into overall improved stability. You can rehearse your senior balance exercises in the comfort of your own home by following along with the direction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Balance Reactions And Senior Balance Exercises

Strong Reactions With Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Being able to respond with necessary stability to uneven ground or various textures like thick carpet can be enhanced through daily practice of senior balance exercises. Please see more at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Having strong and fast balance reactions at the feet and ankles is critical to remaining upright on various surfaces that we walk on. For older adults, usually age brings stiffer ankle joints and weaker lower leg muscles. As a result, medical researchers have been investigating the effectiveness of participating in stability routines for those in the aging population. As an example, a study published by Levinger P, et al titled, Biomechanical balance response during induced falls under dual task conditions in people with knee osteoarthritis, looked at balance abilities for those older individuals who have osteoarthritis of the knees. The researchers stated that people with knee osteoarthritis are at twice the risk of falling compared to older people without knee osteoarthritis. The study, therefore, investigated the biomechanical response of the trunk and lower limb joints during a forward induced fall under different task conditions in people with and without knee osteoarthritis. The researchers found that when simulating a forward fall, participants with osteoarthritis demonstrated difficulty in absorbing the impact and slowing down the forward momentum of the body during a recovery step. Moreover, poor dynamic postural control was demonstrated as task complexity increased. As a result, the medical scientists as well as healthcare providers like physical therapists and doctors recommend that older adults, especially those with osteoarthritis should rehearse certain senior balance exercises every day to maximize their balance abilities.

Senior Balance Exercises For Those With Osteoarthritis

To help those with Osteoarthritis, medical providers and medical researchers suggest that older adults perform senior balance exercises on a daily basis. equilibrium routines have been shown to increase strength and speed of balance reactions at the ankles, which in turn helps with overall steadiness during movement activities. You can learn which steadiness routines to rehearse and how to preform those senior balance exercises by following the direction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Senior Balance Exercises For The Long Haul

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Older adults sometimes battle with feelings of fatigue, shortness of breath, weakness and immobility which can be helped by participating in fitness regimes that include cardiovascular programs and  senior balance exercises. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Medical researchers have found that different types of exercise programs can be a significant benefit for those in the aging population. As an example, endurance exercises — activities that increase your breathing and heart rate — such as dancing, walking, swimming, or bicycling, increase your stamina and improve the health of your lungs and circulatory system as well as your heart. There are many ways to be generally active or to participate in fitness activities. You can be active in short spurts throughout the day or you can set aside specific times of the day or specific days of the week to exercise. Many physical activities, such as brisk walking or raking leaves, are free or low-cost and do not require special equipment. Other endurance event ideas include riding a bike, playing tennis, jogging or skiing. One important aspect before you start an endurance program is to perform specific senior balance exercises to establish the needed steadiness for your activity.

Senior Balance Exercises For Endurance Events

before you begin an endurance activity, it is essential to rehearse senior balance exercises to build adequate stability. as an example, before starting on a brisk walk, you can practice tandem walking where you walk in a narrow base of support along a line. Walking heel to toe along a line will develop strong balance reactions at the feet and ankles, preparing you for outdoor, brisk walking. You can learn how to do tandem walking and other senior balance exercises by joining in with a knowledgeable Physical Therapist as she explains in detail these equilibrium routines on the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Sarcopenia And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Those With Sarcopenia

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Sarcopenia is part of the aging process for many older adults, which can be combatted by regular physical fitness including a series of senior balance exercises.  Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Around the age of age 40 to age 80, about 30 to 50 percent of your muscle mass just goes away. This terrible process is known as sarcopenia. This condition is common and clearly linked to frailty, imbalance, increased fall risk and poor health in senior citizens. New research from England suggests the combining exercise with proper diet may offer some hope. Exercise training, including balance exercises, and diet supplementation have been shown to be effective in preventing sarcopenia in some studies. Professor Sian Robinson, who led the review, says, “Poor diets and being physically inactive are common in older age. Understanding the benefits of maintaining sufficient levels of physical activity and diet quality to prevent sarcopenia is therefore a priority. One of the first steps towards being more physically active involves performing certain steadiness routines to advance stability and reduce the risk of falling with various activities.

Senior Balance Exercises For Weakened Muscles

By beginning with a program of senior balance exercises, older individuals are able to enhance their overall steadiness before initiating a fitness program that includes activities such as walking or biking. For individuals diagnosed with sarcopenia who experience loss of muscle mass, decreased strength and general imbalance, rehearsing equilibrium routines on a daily basis is critical for minimizing the possibility of a fall and accompanying fracture. One of the best ways to practice senior balance exercises in the comfort of your own home is to follow along with the direction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Trauma Reflexes And Balance Exercises

Pain Reflexes And  Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Reflexes are wired into our movement patterns and can effect our stability, requiring the need to practice certain balance exercises every day to reduce any risk of falling.   Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Reflexes can respond to various inputs and empower different movement patterns.  Reflexes can be described as flexor withdrawal reflexes, postural reflexes, extensor reflexes, monosynaptic reflexes and more. Reflexes can also be a result of high energy impacts that effect our bodies via trauma or overuse, painful syndromes. One type of reflexive response can be named a "Trauma Reflex."

The Trauma Reflex

The Trauma Reflex occurs involuntarily in response to accidents and injuries and the need to avoid further pain as one compensates due to an injury. This reflex involves the muscles of the trunk rotators, which, when contracted, hike the hip on one side and twist the spine slightly. Examples of this would be the repetitive task of holding a young child on one’s hip, a sudden fall of any kind, limping on one side in response to, for example, a twisted ankle on the other side, falling on one’s tailbone in a fall or suffering from appendicitis. This reflex presents with side bending and rotations in the pelvis/trunk/shoulder/head. This postural compensation may be slight, or very noticeable, but its effects can be devastating. In many cases scoliosis is an example of an habituated  trauma reflex, creating a curve and tilting in the spine and trunk. Unfortunately, due to Sensory Motor Amnesia, some people stay stuck in the extremes of these postural reflexes out of habit, unable to sense the postural imbalances in their bodies.  Many medical professional see these problems as structural in nature, when in fact they are functional. Improved function of the muscles improves the structure (posture). There are specific movement patterns, for example the Hanna Somatic Education, which resolves these problems through a process of cultivating awareness of the “amnesic” muscles first, then retraining the brain to retrain the muscles to release and relax back to a new length. This process results in improved balance, coordination and overall functioning of the musculoskeletal system. These movement patterns can be combined by rehearsing specific balance exercises, which will enhance overall stability and reduce any risk of falling.

Do Balance Exercises For Trauma Patterns

For those folks who experience muscle imbalance and instability due to trauma reflexes, it is critical to practice certain balance exercises to maximize your balance abilities and limit the possibility of a fall. Especially for those folks who seem to spend most of their movement time in patterns of trauma reflexes, it is essential to balance those movements with certain steadiness routines. You can learn proper stability techniques and balance exercises by following the direction of a qualified Physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.

Shoe Fitting For Senior Balance Exercises

Good Footwear For Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
When practicing senior balance exercises or other fitness regimes, it is important to wear sturdy, well fitting shoes. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Far too often, older adults get in the habit of wearing slippers at home and loose fitting shoes for exercise, which can lead to slips, trips and falls. Having good snuggly fitting shoes can help enhance balance and minimize the possibility of a fall. Here are some tips for making sure your shoes fit:
  • Shoe size may change as you age, so always have your feet measured before buying shoes. The best time to measure your feet is at the end of the day when your feet are largest.
  • Most of us have one foot that is larger than the other. Make sure your shoes fit your larger foot.
  • Don't buy shoes without trying them on first. Shoe sizes can vary depending on the kind, make, and style. For example, the size you wear for sneakers may not be the same size you need for dress shoes.
  • Walk in the shoes to make sure they feel right. The heel of the shoe should not slide up and down when you walk.
  • Choose a shoe that is shaped like your foot. Styles with high heels or pointed toes can hurt your feet.
  • Stand up when trying on shoes to make sure there is about 1/2 inch between your toe and the end of the shoe.
  • Make sure the ball of your foot fits comfortably into the widest part of the shoe.
  • Don't buy shoes that feel too tight and hope they will stretch.
  • The upper part of the shoes should be made of a soft, flexible material.
  • Soles should give solid footing and not slip. Thick soles cushion your feet when walking on hard surfaces.
  • Low-heeled shoes are more comfortable, safer, and less damaging than high-heeled shoes.
In addition to wearing good shoes, you can increase your stability by performing certain senior balance exercises every day.

Wear Sturdy Shoes For Senior Balance Exercises

Most senior balance exercises are rehearsed in the standing position, which lends to wearing sturdy, well fitting shoes. If you try to perform equilibrium routines in slippers you will lack the support that is needed for good balance. As an example, one equilibrium routine is standing on one foot. With this single leg standing routine, you want a snug fitting shoe to add maximal support. You can discover how to perform single leg standing routines and other senior balance exercises  by following the direction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.
