Furthermore, the researchers found that all the elderly patients they studied benefited regardless of heart failure severity, age and gender. Professor Rod Taylor, chair of health services research and director of the Exeter Clinical Trials Unit at the University of Exeter Medical School in Exeter, United Kingdom, said,   "The message for heart failure patients is clear. Exercise is good for you, it will make you feel better, and it could potentially make you live longer." Professor Taylor and colleagues previously conducted a meta-analysis of randomized trials which showed that heart failure patients who exercised were admitted to hospital less often and had a better quality of life. To conduct the study, the investigators identified 23 randomized trials of exercise that included at least 50 heart failure patients who were followed up for six months or longer. After asking the authors of all 23 studies for individual patient data, they received the information from 20 trials. The 20 trials included 4,043 patients with heart failure. The investigators used the individual patient data to assess the impact of exercise on the time to all-cause mortality and first hospitalization. They also examined the potential influence of patient characteristics including age, gender, heart failure severity (defined by New York Heart Association class), ischemic etiology, baseline left ventricular ejection fraction, and peak oxygen uptake. The investigators found that exercise was associated with an 18% lower risk of all-cause mortality and an 11% reduced risk of hospitalization compared with no exercise. Medical researchers as well as healthcare providers like nurses, physician assistants, doctors and physical therapists agree that older individuals who participate in fitness regimes should also perform senior balance exercises to develop necessary stability for their workouts.

  • Talk with your doctor or physical therapist if you are unsure about a particular exercise. For example, if you’ve had hip or back surgery, talk with your doctor before doing lower-body exercises.
  • Always warm up before stretching exercises. Stretch after endurance or strength exercises. If you are doing only stretching exercises, warm up with a few minutes of easy walking first. Stretching your muscles before they are warmed up may result in injury.
  • Always remember to breathe normally while holding a stretch.
  • Stretching may feel slightly uncomfortable; for example, a mild pulling feeling is normal.
  • You are stretching too far if you feel sharp or stabbing pain, or joint pain — while doing the stretch or even the next day. Reduce the stretch so that it doesn’t hurt.
  • Never “bounce” into a stretch. Make slow, steady movements instead. Jerking into position can cause muscles to tighten, possibly causing injury.
  • Avoid “locking” your joints. Straighten your arms and legs when you stretch them, but don’t hold them tightly in a straight position. Your joints should always be slightly bent while stretching.   • Try dusting your feet every day with talc-free foot powder.
Dry skin can cause itching and burning feet. Use mild soap in small amounts and a cream or lotion on your legs and feet every day. Be careful about adding oils to bath water since they can make your feet and bathtub very slippery.
Corns and calluses are caused by pressure when the bony parts of your feet rub against your shoes. Corns usually appear on the tops or sides of toes while calluses form on the soles of feet. Wearing shoes that fit better or using non-medicated pads may help. While bathing, gently rub the corn or callus with a washcloth or pumice stone to help reduce the size. To avoid infection, do not try to shave off the corn or callus. See your doctor, especially if you have diabetes or circulation problems.
Warts are skin growths caused by viruses. They may be painful and can spread if not treated. Some over-the-counter products may help to get rid of warts. See your doctor for treatment.
Bunions are swollen and tender joints that can develop at the base of your big toes. They tend to run in families. Bunions can also be caused by shoes that are too small or have pointed toes. If a bunion is not too painful, wearing shoes cut wide at the toes and middle part of the foot (instep) or shoe inserts may help. Taping or padding the bunion may bring relief. Some over-the-counter pain medicine may lessen pain and reduce swelling. Talk to your doctor if you are in pain. Sometimes surgery is needed to relieve the pressure and repair the toe joint.
Ingrown toenails are caused by a piece of the nail piercing the skin. This can happen if you don't cut your toenails straight across so the corner of the nail can be seen above the skin. Use clippers made to cut toenails. Ingrown toenails are very common in the large toes. A doctor can remove the part of the nail that is cutting into the skin.
Neuromas are the result of a build-up of tissue around an inflamed nerve in the foot. They may cause tingling, numbness, or pain in the ball of your foot and toes. This may cause you to lose your balance. Shoes that are too narrow or have high heels can make the problem worse. See your doctor. Sometimes, inserts put in your shoes can help.
Hammertoe is caused by a shortening of the tendons that control toe movements. The toe joint grows and pulls the toe back. Over time, the joint gets bigger and stiffens as it rubs against shoes. This can affect your balance. More space in the shoe or stocking can help. In very serious cases, surgery may be needed.
Spurs are bony bumps that grow on bones of your feet. They are caused by stress on the feet. Standing for long periods of time, wearing badly fitting shoes, or being overweight can make spurs worse. Sometimes spurs are painless. At other times, they can hurt. Treatments for spurs include foot supports, heel pads, and heel cups. Sometimes surgery is needed.
Swollen feet may happen when you have been standing for a long time. If your feet and ankles stay swollen, it may be a sign of more serious health problems. See your doctor for a check-up.

•    Walking problems and unsteady balance. This is mainly caused by weakness and loss of strength in the legs.
•    Cognitive impairment. These include episodes of confusion, forgetfulness, and memory. Complaints generally start either at the onset of use or after years of using a statin.
•    Cataracts. There is an increase likelihood of developing cataract in persons who use statins. Cataracts not only effect one’s vision, but also the ability to maintain safe mobility.
•    Diabetes. Statins can result in high blood sugar levels and increase the risk of developing diabetes.
•    Sleep problems. These consist of daytime sleepiness and fatigue. Sleep complains are also associated with irritability and cognitive problems.
•    Drug interactions. Up to 80% of people who take a statin are also taking at least one other medication (either prescription or over-the-counter) that has the potential to affect the effectiveness of the statin. As well, this can increase the likelihood of drug interactions and drug toxicity.
About 20% of elders taking a statin experienced a side effect. As a result, medical providers such as doctors, physicians assistants and physical therapists suggest that older individuals who take statins should also participated in senior balance exercises and leg strengthening exercises.
