As a result, the researchers concluded that the core strengthening exercise program was beneficial for the older individual population and that core strengthening should be part of a comprehensive balance-training program for older adults.

It concludes that if one spouse improves or initiates his or her exercise program, the other spouse is significantly more likely to do the same. The researchers conclude that a better approach to helping people boost their physical activity to improve health might be to counsel married couples to exercise together instead of individually. Laura Cobb, a Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health reported that "When it comes to physical fitness, the best peer pressure to get moving could be coming from the person who sits across from you at the breakfast table."  Furthermore, "There's an epidemic of people in this country who don't get enough exercise and we should harness the power of the couple to ensure people are getting a healthy amount of physical activity." The American Heart Association recommends that adults should exercise at a moderate intensity for a minimum of 150 minutes per week or at a vigorous intensity for at least 75 minutes per week. Forty-five percent of husbands and 33 percent of wives in the study group met these recommendations at the first visit. They found that when a wife met recommended levels of exercise at the first visit, her husband was 70 percent more likely to meet those levels at subsequent visits than those whose wives were less physically active. When a husband met recommended exercise levels, his wife was 40 percent more likely to meet the levels at follow-up visits. Additionally, medical professionals like doctors, nurses and physical therapists recommend that older individuals begin a simple senior balance exercise program first to develop necessary stability before embarking on a more rigorous fitness regime.

Spartano, Ph.D., lead author and a postdoctoral fellow at the Boston University School of Medicine noted, "Many people don't start worrying about their brain health until later in life, but this study provides more evidence that certain behaviors and risk factors in midlife may have consequences for brain aging later on."  A subset of 1,271 participants from the Framingham Offspring Study participated in exercise treadmill testing in the 1970s, when their average age was 41.  Starting in 1999, when their average age was 60, they underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of their brains as well as cognitive tests. The participants did not have heart disease or cognitive problems at the beginning of the study, and none were taking medication that alters heart rate. In individuals with low fitness levels, the blood pressure and heart rate responses to low levels of exercise are often much higher than in individuals with better fitness. "Small blood vessels in the brain are vulnerable to changes in blood pressure and can be damaged by these fluctuations," Spartano said.  "Vascular damage in the brain can contribute to structural changes in the brain and cognitive losses. In our investigation we wanted to determine whether exaggerated blood pressure fluctuations during exercise were related to later structural changes in the brain." The researchers found:
  ● People who had a lower fitness level or greater increase in diastolic blood pressure (bottom number) or heart rate a few minutes into the low-intensity treadmill test (2.5 miles an hour) had smaller brain tissue volume later in life.
  ● People who had a larger increase in diastolic blood pressure during low-intensity exercise also performed more poorly on a cognitive test for decision-making function later in life.
Thus, poor physical fitness appears to be associated with accelerated brain aging, the researchers suggest. As a consequence, medical professionals like doctors, nurses and physical therapists recommend that individuals participate in endurance activities, strengthening exercises and senior balance exercises to maximize overall fitness levels, which contribute to better brain health.

People with cervicogenic dizziness may also complain of general imbalance that may increase with head movements and with movement in the environment. Although no formal studies have been completed, true cervicogenic dizziness is thought to be rare. An evaluation for cervicogenic dizziness involves a thorough medical evaluation because the symptoms are similar to other causes of dizziness. Testing of inner ear function is usually requested to ensure that the peripheral or central vestibular system is intact. A health care practitioner, like a physical therapist,  may perform a maneuver in which the body is turned while the head is held fixed to see if it causes nystagmus (eye movements) or dizziness to confirm the suspected diagnosis. Additionally, by palpating the cervical spine and taking the neck through range of motion tests, a physical therapist can also confirm a diagnosis of cervicogenic dizziness. Cervicogenic dizziness often occurs as a result of whiplash or head injury and is often seen in conjunction with brain injury or injury to the inner ear. At times, it is often difficult to distinguish between cervicogenic dizziness and other medical problems. Cervicogenic dizziness that occurs in conjunction with brain injury or another form of dizziness will be more difficult to diagnose and treat.  The majority of patients with cervicogenic dizziness improve with treatments of the neck problem, dizziness and balance issues.  Several studies have reported that approximately 75 percent of patients improve with conservative treatment of the neck such as medication, gentle mobilization, balance exercise, stretches, and instruction in proper posture and use of the neck.For other patients, improvement involves treatment of the neck problem in addition to vestibular therapy. To be specific, Vestibular rehabilitation is quite comprehensive and is directed at what problems are found on evaluation and may include eye exercises, balance exercises, walking, and graded exposure to environments that make you dizzy.
