Holiday Walking Program And Balance Exercises

Stay Safe While Walking With Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comCA chrome
A daily dose of balance exercises  can help you stay safe as you embark on a walking program this holiday season. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now With Thanksgiving and Christmas upon us, many people are motivated to hit the streets, treadmill and trails to burn off a few calories enjoyed during the festivities.  Brisk walking is one of the best exercise routines available. The repetitive compressive forces transmitted through bones during walking is an excellent way to minimize the onset of osteoporosis, especially for middle aged to older women. Furthermore, brisk walking, where the individual raises their heart rate, is an ideal exercise for cardiovascular health. Walking also helps to release neurochemicals in the body like endorphins, which can be excellent mood elevators. Additionally, one way to be sure that you stay safe and avoid and trips or slips that can lead to falls is to practice equilibrium routines indoors on a regular basis to build adequate balance abilities before initiating your walking program.

 Balance Exercises For Safe Walking

To stay safe this holiday season, try a daily regime of balance exercises. Before heading out the door to walking the neighborhood or strike out on a hiking trail, be sure to perform equilibrium routines to advance your balance skills. One necessary component of good stability is having fast and strong balance reactions at the feet and ankles. Our natural balance reactions can be seen when we stand on one foot and we notice the small, rapid movement occurring around the ankles. Theses quick movements are adjustments to the minute shifting of our body weight over the small base of support, in this case-- one foot. To build strong balance reactions, you can work on standing on one foot for twenty seconds, three repetitions in a row, every day of the week. Once you develop quick and strong ankle adjustments, you will be ready for walking on hiking trails or other uneven terrain. You can learn these balance exercises and a step by step progression of other appropriate equilibrium routines by following the instruction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Rheumatoid Arthritis And Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises Can Help Many Conditions

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comA doctor examines an X-ray of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis.
Many physical conditions and diseases and their secondary complications can be helped by practicing balance exercises on a regular basis.  Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Rheumatoid Arthritis is an example of an ailment which can result in imbalance, lower leg weakness and joint stiffness, which can lead to a fall and further injury. To be more specific, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks itself, causing chronic joint inflammation. While it primarily affects joints, it can also cause inflammation of organs as the disease progresses. People with Rheumatoid Arthritis may experience an increase in symptoms –called flares – that can last for days or weeks. They may also have periods of remission where they have few or no symptoms. There is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, but medications can slow the progression of the disease and ease symptoms. Additionally, the joint inflammation, pain and stiffness experienced by people with Rheumatoid Arthritis can lead to balance problems and a higher risk for falling. As a result, it is imperative for individuals who have been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis to perform steadiness exercises every day to improve balance and limit the potential of a fall.

Balance Exercises Assist Those With Rheumatoid Arthritis

since one of the secondary symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis  is decreased stability with walking and standing activities like cooking and dressing, rehearsing balance exercises as part of a regular routine is essential. A simple equilibrium exercise to start with can be standing on one foot. This single leg standing routine should be performed near a stable object like a counter or table, if you need to briefly hang on to re-set your balance point. The single leg standing exercise should be performed in sets of three and held for twenty seconds during each repetition. After three repetitions on one foot, you can switch to practicing three repetitions on the other foot. Over time, this steadiness exercise will help to strengthening and speed up the balance reactions in your feet and ankles, which will translate into better balance. You can learn how to perform the single standing exercise and other balance exercises by following along with the instruction of an experienced Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Proprioception Feedback And Balance Exercises

Use Sensory Feedback With Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
From Olympic athletes to senor citizens, we all need to develop strong sensory feedback through balance exercises  to maximize steadiness with movement activities, whether that is playing a high level competitive sport or just getting around the home safely. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  One of the key components to maintain an upright position  for jockeys on high speed thoroughbreds or for older adults trying to get in and out of the bat tub safely, is to use the positional sensory feedback called proprioception. Proprioception is the ability to sense stimuli arising within the body regarding position, motion, and equilibrium. Even if a person is blindfolded, he or she knows through proprioception if an arm is above the head or hanging by the side of the body. The sense of proprioception is disturbed in many neurological and orthopedic disorders or after surgical procedures like hip or knees replacements.  During balance exercises, a person can focus on their proprioceptive feedback from the feet and ankles to heighten their stability. Furthermore, balance training involves many of our senses including vision and the sense of touch. Exercises for steadiness performed on a regular basis can help to make balance a sixth sense for us. One of the key balance training techniques is to use the proprioceptive sense of touch between our feet and the ground to help stabilize us. As we focus on using that sense of touch, it can become like a sixth sense to help steady us in times of challenged balance.

Balance Exercises Keep Us Steady

By working on specific balance exercises every day, we can improve our steadiness with all movement activities. To take advantage of our natural proprioceptive feedback, you can start a simple stability routine in the comfort of your own home. Maximizing our proprioceptive sensory feedback can be as simple as standing with your feet shoulder width a part  and centering your body weight in the middle of your arches. In this position, you can concentrate on the sense of touch from your feet, focusing on that sensory feedback will enhance the connection between your proprioceptive information and the balance center in your brain, which will heighten your overall stability. You can learn this steadiness technique and a step by step progression of balance exercises by following the direction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Knee Osteoarthritis And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Aid Those With Arthritis

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Senior balance exercises  can be helpful for older adults, especially those who suffer with osteoarthritis in the knees. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by progressive loss of articular cartilage, subchondral bone sclerosis, osteophyte formation, and synovial inflammation. In the USA, an estimated 27 million adults have clinical osteoarthritis. The knee joint is most commonly involved in lower extremity osteoarthritis. According to the 1991–94 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 12.1% of Americans aged 60 years above have symptomatic radiographic osteoarthritis of the knee. Knee pain is present in 31% of men and women aged 65 years and above in Hong Kong, and the presence of knee pain is associated with greater functional impairment and adverse psychological effects. Falls in older people can result in physical injuries such as bony fractures and subdural haematoma, as well as the psychological consequences of fear of falling and depression. Fear of falling is associated with reduced functional status, reduced quality of life (QoL) and increased institutionalization rate. Numerous risk factors have been reported for falls in older people that include muscular weakness, medications, cognitive decline, cardiovascular disorders, stroke disease, visual impairment and environmental factors. Additionally, stiffness at the joints in the knees, hips and ankles can also lead to a greater incidence of falling. Consequently, healthcare professionals like Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists recommend that those individuals in the aging population partake in a daily regime of senior balance exercises to boost their balance abilities and reduce their risk for falling.

Daily Senior Balance Exercises Improve Steadiness

A daily routine of senior balance exercises have been found to be effective to enhance overall steadiness and minimize the potential of a fall. Equilibrium routines can be a simple as standing with one foot directly in front of the other foot in a tandem position. In this tandem stance position, the ankle and feet joints and muscles with be activated to maintain an upright position. As a result, the person's balance abilities will improve and their risk for falling will decrease. You can find this senior balance exercise and a step by step progression of other equilibrium exercises in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Arthritis, Falls And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Help Those With Arthritis

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
As individuals age, they often experience conditions that increase their risk for falling and performing senior balance exercises can be one way to minimize that risk. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now One such condition that increases in incidence among older adults is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis can effect many different joints. When arthritis plagues lower extremity joints like hips and knees, older people often see a reduction in their balance abilities and a greater risk for falling. Osteoarthritis and falls are common conditions affecting older individuals which are associated with disability and escalating health expenditure. Medical providers like  doctors, nurses and physical therapists  widely assumed that osteoarthritis is an established risk factor for falls in older people.  In addition, joint arthroplasty appears to increase the risk of falls in individuals with osteoarthritis. Stiff joints, whether they are arthritic or post surgical replacements, often lead to a reduction in the speed and strength of balance reactions throughout the lower extremities, which are necessary to respond to changes in the person's body with movement. Consequently, practicing senior balance exercises is essential to enhance stability and strengthening the necessary balance reactions.

Specific Senior Balance Exercises Enhance Stability

Medical researchers have found that certain senior balance exercises are effective in maximizing balance skills and overall steadiness with movement activities, especially for folks who suffer with osteoarthritis in joints of the lower extremities. As an example, you can start with standing on one foot ( near a table or counter for safety). In this single leg position, you will notice substantial movement at your feet and ankles. The excessive movement is actually your natural balance reactions at work, keeping you upright and responding to the minute changes in your body weight movement. You can progress this stability exercise by adding balance equipment like a rocker board or BOSU. By challenging your balance abilities in a safe environment, you will be able to advance your stability skills and minimize any possibility of a fall. You can learn these senior balance exercises and specific stability techniques by following along with the instruction of an experienced Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Low Balance Confidence And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Boost Confidence

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comSenior Balance Exercises Are Beneficial For All
The fear of falling is very real and prevalent for older individuals and medical researchers have proven that rehearsing senior balance exercises as part of a daily fitness regime can enhance steadiness and limit the possibility of a fall. Please see     http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now For many in the aging population, low balance confidence is a major health problem among older adults restricting their participation in and quality of daily life. Senior citizens who have previously experienced a fall often report significant fear of a second fall. Additionally, older adults who have balance problems due to orthopedic or neurological conditions often are fearful of falling. Those elderly folks with apprehension of falling can discover that their cognitive mindset can lead to avoidance of activities, causing restriction of physical activities and participation in daily life. This restriction can result in physical frailty, falls and loss of independence and a downward spiral that leads to greater weakness, imbalance and risk for falling. thankfully, medical researchers have demonstrated that those senior citizens who follow a daily program of strengthening exercises and senior balance exercises can minimize their potential for falling as well as their fear of falling.

Practicing Senior Balance Exercises Elevates Confidence With Stability

Healthcare providers and medical researchers agree that one of the best ways to advance balance abilities and limit falls is to rehearse senior balance exercises every day. Over time as older adults perform equilibrium routines like standing on one foot near a table or counter, they will notice a significant improvement in balance skills as their balance reactions at the feet and ankles get stronger. Additionally, as older individuals practice dynamic steadiness activities like walking down the hallway with a tandem walking technique, where they place one foot directly in front of the other foot as they walk along a line, they will feel more confident to walk on unstable or uneven surfaces like thick carpet or a dirt hiking trail. These specific senior balance exercises can be performed in the convenience of your own home by following along with the instruction and demonstration of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Prediction Of Falls And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Reduce The Potential Of Falling

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comsenior living
Falling can be a frightening and debilitating experience for those in the aging population and performing senior balance exercises  on a regular basis can help to limit the possibility of a fall. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now For senior citizens, falls are an important safety challenge, with around half causing physical injuries that compromise the recovery of older, frailer patients. In regards to falls that occur within a hospital, falls predominantly affect and harm older, frailer people who currently account for the highest proportion of patients in general hospitals. Over the years, healthcare workers have collected data to better predict fall rates among older people. Reported rates of falls across the whole hospital population typically range from three to five falls per 1,000 bed days, representing >250,000 falls each year in English hospitals  and over 1 million falls in hospitals in the USA. Falls can have serious consequences; 30–51% of falls in hospitals result in some injury, with fractures occurring in 1–3%. People who are hospital inpatients when they fall and fracture have poor outcomes  and, if they survive, greatly extended lengths of stay. Even falls with minor or no injury can cause anxiety and distress to patients, their families and hospital staff, creating a downward spiral where fear of falling leads to reduced mobility and increased dependency. Falls can also lead to litigation. For all these reasons, prevention of falls is an important patient safety challenge for all  hospitals and other medical facilities internationally. As a result, it s essential for older individuals to practice senior balance exercises every day to minimize the risk of falling and being admitted to a hospital.

Senior Balance Exercises Enhance Steadiness

Medical researchers have demonstrated that the most effective way to decrease the incidence and frequency of falling for older folks is to perform senior balance exercises as part of a daily exercise program. Equilibrium routines can be as basic as standing with feet shoulder width a part and centering ones body weight in the center of the base of support designated by there feet. Stability routines can be progressed to standing on one foot, near a counter or table. These senior balance exercises can be performed in the comfort of your own home by following the direction of an experienced Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Dynamic Remodelling And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Those With Osteoarthritis

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comSenior exercises-- together
As we age, Osteoarthritis is a very common condition, which can effect movement abilities and performing senior balance exercises can be beneficial for those with Osteoarthritis. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis worldwide and rapidly increasing with ageing populations. It is a major source of pain, disability and immobility for individuals and economic burden for health economies. Modern imaging, in particular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), has helped us to understand that Osteoarthritis is a dynamic remodelling process involving all the structures within the joint. Inflammation is common in Osteoarthritis, with a high prevalence of synovitis seen on imaging, and this has been associated with joint pain. MRI detected changes within the subchondral bone are also common and associated with pain and structural progression. Joint pain and stiffness, reduced participation in valued activities and poor quality of life, and decreased balance are common for individuals with Osteoarthritis. Additionally,  the burden on health economics has previously been estimated at 0.5–1% of gross domestic product. Furthermore, osteoarthritic changes in the knee, hip and spine joints can lead to gait disturbances that result in imbalance and a greater risk for falling. Consequently, older adults who suffer with Osteoarthritis are encouraged to rehearse senior balance exercises on a regular basis to maximize steadiness and limit the possibility of a fall.

Daily Senior Balance Exercises Improve Stability

Medical professionals have determined that performing senior balance exercises every day enhance steadiness and reduce the frequency of falling for older individuals. To compensate for the gait disturbances created by joint pain and stiffness due to Osteoarthritis, those in the aging population are encouraged to rehearse equilibrium routines every day. One such stability exercise involves standing with one foot directly in front of the other foot in a tandem stance position. In this position, you will experience substantial wobbling at your feet and ankles, which is your natural balance reactions hard at work keeping you upright. By developing strong balance reactions in your lower legs, you will be able to greatly increase your balance abilities. You can practice this tandem stance exercise and other senior balance exercises by following the instruction of an experienced Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Age Specific Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises For Midrange to Older Females

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Women in their fifties to seventies are faced with many challenges that  can be benefited by performing balance exercises  as part of a regular routine. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now From Moms who have to transfer kids and groceries in and out of the car to older women who have to transfer themselves in and out of bed, many daily activities create challenges to ones balance abilities. As a result, equilibrium exercises are understandably important for middle aged women and  older women alike to rehearse on a daily basis. Stability exercises and core strengthening routines help combat  forward leaning posture that arises in older women. Furthermore, steadiness exercises,  help correct the faulty gait pattern older women have where they drag their toes on the ground, increasing their risk for falling. For both middle aged women and senior citizens equilibrium exercises can aid in improving leg strength to enhance stability and reduce the risk of falling in  women of all ages and all walks of life. Consequently, research has shown that balance exercises are imperative and very effective for young to older women to perform daily.

Daily Balance Exercises For women Of All Ages

Since medical research has shown that women are more likely to suffer a fall than men, rehearsing balance exercises as part of a daily routine is imperative for women across the ages. women have medical conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis which contribute to imbalance and a greater occurrence of fractures with falling. Consequently, performing equilibrium exercises is a must for women as they grow gracefully in years. Balance exercises in middle age women, 40's and 50's, has been a recent interest for research. Sihvonen S., Era P. and Helenius M. in their recent study, Postural balance and health-related factors in middle-aged and older women with injurious falls and non-fallers, looked at middle age women and balance exercises. Older fallers aged over 70 years have shown impaired balance abilities.  The aim of a recent study was to analyze possible differences in balance control and other health-related factors between female fallers and non-fallers aged 50-68 years. Results:  In the younger age group (50-58 years), chronic illnesses, use of medication, dizziness, and self-reported problems with vision and hearing were more common in fallers than in non-fallers.  The researchers Concluded that younger women (50-58 years) with injurious falls reported more health-related problems than other groups, a fact which should be taken into consideration to prevent further development of fall-related problems. This study shows that even younger women have problems with balance and are at a greater risk for falling when they have other health related issues. Consequently, if we ourselves struggle with or know someone who struggles with health problems, we should encourage them to start balance exercises while they are young in order to keep from falling and adding on other health issues related to a fall. One effective way to practice balance exercises in the convenience of your own home is to follow along with the expert instruction in the Exercise For Balance DVD, developed by a Physical Therapist with 25+ years of experience.

Recommended Amount Of Senior Balance Exercises

Try A Daily Dose Senior Balance Exerciseswalking balance exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Performing senior balance exercises every day is the most effective way to maximize balance abilities and minimize the possibility of a fall. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now The recommended amount of general physical exercise for older adults is the same as that for adults aged 18–64 years—at least 150 min weekly (about 30 min 5 days a week) of moderate-intensity physical activity. However, most older adults do not come close to meeting these recommendations. When older adults exercise, they mostly walk because it is both practical and beneficial. Strengthening exercise is also very important for older adults, yet it remains difficult to engage seniors in this activity with only 10–12% of persons 65 and older saying they do strengthening exercise more than twice a week. Furthermore, An exercise program, even if shown to be efficacious, loses its impact if it cannot be sustained long term. Ideally, a combination of strengthening exercises and equilibrium routines is the most beneficial and prepares the way for a safe walking program.

Regular Senior Balance Exercises Improve Stability

To develop adequate steadiness for all movement activities, a daily regime of senior balance exercises is recommended. By performing equilibrium routines on a regular basis, the body is able to make strong connections between the sensory input form the feet and the balance center in the brain. Additionally, when you rehearse steadiness exercises like standing on one foot you will strengthen the necessary balance reactions at the feet and ankles. Having fast and strong balance reactions enable you to adapt to various terrain or uneven surfaces with walking, which will diminish the potential of a fall with walking. One of the best ways to perform single leg standing exercises is to stand near a table, counter or sink on one foot with your eyes open. The goal is to perform this activity for twenty seconds, three times on each foot. You can practice this exercises, a step by step progression of other senior balance exercises and specific strengthening exercises by following the direction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Hold Steady With Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Help People Who Have Tremors

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comSimple Senior Balance Exercises
For those older individuals who suffer with tremors, practicing senior balance exercises can be beneficial. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now One type of tremor that can result in unsteadiness during movement activities is Essential tremor. Essential tremor is less well known than Parkinsons disease, but it is eight times more common, according to the International Essential Tremor Foundation. An estimated 10 million Americans are affected by the condition, which does share symptoms with Parkinsons disease. The big difference between the two conditions is that people with essential tremor have noticeable shaking that intensifies as they move, while patients with Parkinsons disease have prominent resting tremors that become less obvious with activity. While essential tremor is not life-threatening, it can cause severe disability, including decreased balance and a greater risk for falling. The nervous system disorder begins gradually and worsens over time, most adversely affecting people in middle age and older. The condition can affect almost any part of the body, but usually involves the hands and also may include a "yes-yes" or "no-no" motion of the head. The involuntary tremors can be aggravated by stress, fatigue, caffeine or even extreme temperatures.  For those with Essential tremors, therapy, including balance exercises, resistance training, and neuromuscular re-training, is the first line of defense for reducing shakiness and improving coordination and muscle control.

Static Senior Balance Exercises Reduce Shaking

For those senior citizens who suffer with Essential tremors, rehearsing senior balance exercises can help minimize shakiness with activities. One of the first equilibrium routines to initiate is to learn how to stabilize your body weight in an appropriate upright posture. To achieve this, the first step is to stand with your feet shoulder width a part and imagine a plumb line coursing through the center of your body from your head to a balance point at the center of your feet. with this plumb line in place, you can then imagine the line holding steady and anchoring into the balance point in the middle of your feet. As you concentrate on keeping this balance point still, you will automatically tune in to the sensory input from your feet, which connects with the balance center in your brain. By concentrating on the balance point in your feet, you will find that the symptoms of shaking will be reduced. You can learn how to apply these steadiness strategies and learn specific senior balance exercise progression by following along with the exercise for balance DVD.

Help With Daily Routines and Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Help With Activities Of Daily Living

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comJohn & Ann Betar, 101 & 97 yrs, married 80
For older adults, very day activities can be made more safe by practicing senior balance exercises  on a regular basis. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Healthcare providers have found that nearly half of Americans age 65 and older, totaling about 18 million people, require help with routine daily activities like grocery shopping, cleaning house, bathing, handling medications, meals and more. A new study in Milbank Quarterly reveals a growing need for improved services and support for older Americans, their spouses, their children and other "informal caregivers." While 51 percent of older Americans in the study reported no difficulty with routine tasks, "29 percent reported receiving help with taking care of themselves or getting around in the previous month," said co-author Vicki A. Freedman, Ph.D., a research professor with the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. "Another 20 percent reported that they had difficulty carrying out these activities on their own." Furthermore, models that effectively coordinate health and supportive services will become even more important as a rising number of older Americans with disabilities receive care in settings other than nursing homes. On another note, those in the aging population who struggle with imbalance and mobility restrictions have an even greater difficulty with being independent with their daily routines. As a result, healthcare professionals like doctors, nurses, physical therapists and occupational therapists recommend that older indicviduals rehearse senior balance exercises every day to improve their balance abilities, which will in turn result in better function with daily  routines.

Senior Balance Exercises Enhance Steadiness For Living Routines

Each and every day, we all perform basic routines like dressing and  bathing that can be made safer with a regular dose of senior balance exercises. As an example, having good stability is essential to turn safely in the kitchen or bathroom during food preparation or bathing. Also, steadiness is required to be able to safely carry a cup of coffee or tea from the kitchen counter to the kitchen table. Medical researchers, however, have shown that despite an age related decline in balance abilities, senior citizens are able to improve overall steadiness with movement activities by rehearsing specific equilibrium routines on a daily basis. Now, you can practice a step by step program of senior balance exercises developed by a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the comfort of your own home by following along with the Exercise For Balance DVD.
