How Is Your Balance?

 Balance Exercises Can Improve Steadiness

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Balance exercises can help improve your stability during activities of daily living.  As we look forward to the new year, statistics show us that 1.6 million Americans are expected to present to the emergency room following an injury secondary to a fall.  This rate of falling can be reduced by practicing simple balance exercises on a daily basis.  You can monitor your balance abilities with a few simple tests at home.  One test requires you to be able to stand on one foot for 10 seconds without losing your balance. Another test involves walking along a line heel to toe for ten feet, without losing your balance.  Additionally, you can monitor your steadiness with these activities:
-getting up from a chair
-going up and down stairs
-turning in the kitchen or bathroom
-looking or reaching up above your head
If any of these activities of daily living cause you to lose your balance, then stability exercises are recommended.  Furthermore, if you have any history of previous falls or if you are over the age of 60 equilibrium exercises will be beneficial for you.

 Balance Exercises Can Improve Stability

Balance exercises are the foundation to good fall prevention. Once you notice that your stability is diminished with certain movements during walking and standing activities, then equilibrium exercises on a daily basis are highly recommended.  By starting a balance exercise program, you will improve the connection between your brain and body that is needed to react to situations that challenge your balance. Stability exercises also help to enhance the leg strength that is needed for good balance.  By practicing equilibrium exercises, you will maximize the balance reactions at your feet and ankles and you will also build confidence for all your movement activities.
