Unfortunately, medical conditions such as dementia, diabetes, macular degeneration, stroke, peripheral neuropathy and other issues raise the risk of falling for certain senior citizens. As a result, falls are a major cause of disability and mortality in the elderly, and therefore, represent an important health problem. Medical researchers have provided data that sheds light on the timing and frequency of falling. They found that the frequency of fall occurrence was equally spread over the 7 days of the week. There were, however, more falls taking place around 6 pm: 22.5% of all falls took place between 5 and 8 pm. In one study, the researchers also looked at what activities were being performed when falls were likely to take place. More than half the fall accidents took place in the rooms of the participants. Living room, corridors and toilets were also places with a high fall risk. Walking or standing without help caused 56 out of 143 (39%) fall accidents. Getting out of a wheelchair, 20, and standing up from the toilet, 19, gave similar risks on fall accidents (14 and 13%, respectively). Getting out of bed or an armchair was cited by 31 out of 143 (21.7%) as the activity during the fall accident. Ten out of the 143 (7%) occurred during walking or standing with help (7%). Three (2%) fall accidents occurred during washing and dressing, 4 (2.8%) during walking with a walker.  Fortunately, medical researchers have also proved that practicing senior balance exercises can help reduce the number of falls for older adults as they perform these activities of daily living.

Causes of chronic pain include chronic disorders (eg, cancer, arthritis, diabetes), injuries (eg, herniated disk, torn ligament), and many primary pain disorders (eg, neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic headache). Unresolved, long-lasting disorders (eg, cancer, RA, herniated disk) that produce ongoing nociceptive stimuli may account completely for chronic pain. Alternatively, injury, even mild injury, may lead to long-lasting changes (sensitization) in the nervous system—from peripheral receptors to the cerebral cortex—that may produce persistent pain in the absence of ongoing nociceptive stimuli. With sensitization, discomfort that is due to a nearly resolved disorder and might otherwise be perceived as mild or trivial is instead perceived as significant pain. Psychologic factors may also amplify persistent pain. Thus, chronic pain commonly appears out of proportion to identifiable physical processes. In some cases (eg, chronic back pain after injury), the original precipitant of pain is obvious; in others (eg, chronic headache, atypical facial pain, chronic abdominal pain), the precipitant is remote or occult. In either case, chronic pain can lead to secondary issues like immobility and imbalance. Consequently, performing a gentle program of senior balance exercises can be beneficial for those with chronic pain.

   ● Physical activities associated with reduced risk included walking, gardening, and cycling.
Miranda Armstrong, M.Phil., Ph.D., the study’s lead author and a physical activity epidemiologist at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom said, “However, to prevent heart disease, stroke and blood clots, our results suggest that women don’t need to do very frequent activity as this seems to provide little additional benefit above that from moderately frequent activity.” Participants included 1.1 million women in the United Kingdom with no history of cancer, heart disease, stroke, blood clots, or diabetes who joined the Million Women study in 1996-2001. Their average age when they joined the study was 56. ·         Stay with the patient and support them if they are unsteady
·         Do not attempt to lift a patient by yourself unless you have had training, ask for help
