Learn How To Do Balance Exercises To Prevent Falls

Learn Balance Exercises Before You Fall

Balance exercises are proven to reduce falls and prevent injuries. I just spoke with my downcast neighbor. His Mom fell while stepping off a curb. She fell on her face, lost vision in one eye and now is incoherent, displaying signs of dementia. We don't realize how important balance exercises are until it is too late and a major fall and injury occurs. These days we must all be more responsible for our health and more proactive at taking care of ourselves.

Use Balance Exercises As Preventative Medicine

Balance exercises performed on a daily basis can improve balance, strengthen balance reactions and prevent falls. Anyone over the age of 60 years old should be practicing balance exercises every day to maximize their balance abilities and to stay as healthy and active as possible.

Balance Exercises Help Reduce Health Care Costs

Balance Exercises Help Cut Health Care Costs

Balance exercises are beneficial in many ways. Statistics show that 1 in 3 aging adults-- that's almost 20 million and climbing-- will fall each year, sustaining serious injuries like hip and wrist fractures. Those injuries are massively expensive for the individual as well as for the nation. On average, a trip to the emergency room can be up to $1,000 or more. The cost of a wrist fracture with x-rays and casting is in the ballpark of $2500-3500. As amazing as it seems, a hip surgery can run $43,000 on average. After the initial treatments, nursing home care and physical therapy visits follow.

Balance Exercises Save Money

Balance exercises are the perfect alternative to counteract the substantial expenses of a fall. Thankfully, research has shown that practicing balance exercises three times a week to daily over a period of six months helps to reduce the risk of falling by as much as 42%. Balance exercises done on a consistent basis help to improve the brain-body connection for balance reactions. Balance exercises help to improve balance in simple settings like walking around the home. Balance exercises also help improve balance in challenging situations like walking downstairs, off curbs, on hiking trails, on the golf course, etc.

Balance Exercises Start With A Good Foundation

Balance Exercises From A Solid Foundation

Balance exercises need to start with a good foundation. Without a stable base of support, balance exercises will be unstable from the get go. Beginning balance exercises should start with standing, feet shoulder width apart and concentrating on the sense of touch between the feet and the floor. From this position, you can start balance exercises with a firm foundation.
watch this short video for an example of a stable foundation: Balance exercises with an expert otter

Balance Exercises From A Stable Support

We can learn about a good base of support for balance exercises from the sea otter. In the video clip, we see that the sea otter has an excellent base of support between his feet which provides good balance. The otter is able to stand upright in a good posture with good balance secondary to starting with an excellent base of support and a firm foundation.

Balance Training For Overhead Activities

Balance Training For Overhead Work

Balance training is important to keep from losing balance and falling when looking up or when working overhead. When we look up or reach up over ones' head, that movement shifts the balance point posteriorly to the heels. Normally, balance training instructs us to center our balance point in the middle of our feet while standing. When the balance point shifts to the heels, it is very easy to lose balance and fall backwards.
Watch a quick VIDEO CLIP about reaching overhead in the kitchen: Balance Training For Overhead Reaching

Specific Balance Training

Balance training should be performed on a daily basis to safely navigate overhead activities. By practicing specific balance techniques and balance exercises every day, an individual will be able to handle challenging activities of daily living like reaching into a cabinet, washing hair, or hanging up a coat without losing balance.

Exercise intervention to improve strength and balance among older adults

Balance exercises-- Exercise intervention designed to improve strength and dynamic balance among community-dwelling older adults

Recently, studies have looked at balance exercises to help aging individuals in our communities. Loss of balance and falling are critical concerns for older adults. Physical activity and balance exercises can improve balance and decrease the risk of falling. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a simple, low-cost exercise program for community-dwelling older adults. Sixteen senior adults were evaluated using the Senior Fitness Test for measures of functional strength, aerobic endurance, dynamic balance and agility, and flexibility. In addition, measures of height, weight, resting blood pressure, blood lipids, and cognitive function were obtained. Participants then attended a 10-week exercise class including stretching, strengthening, and balance-training exercises.

Balance Exercises Help Older Adults

At the completion of the program, significant improvements were observed in tests measuring dynamic balance and agility, lower and upper extremity strength, and upper extremity flexibility. The results indicate that balance exercise programs such as this are an effective, low-cost solution to improving health and factors that affect falling risk among older adults.

Balance training, injury characteristics and prevention programmes for the older golfer

Balance Training Helps Older Golfers

Participation in the sport of golf has risen considerably, particularly amongst senior players whose age is categorised as 50 years or more. Balance exercises and balance training are particularly important for older golfers. Golf presents both potential health benefits and risks for this older group of players. The health risks are compounded by the fact that the musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems of senior players may not be as efficient at withstanding the strains and stress of this type of repetitive exercise. It was the purpose of this review paper (by Lindsay D.M., Horton J.F. and Vandervoort A.A.) to investigate the age-related health issues facing senior golfers and to discuss appropriate intervention strategies to help minimise these detrimental effects. The literature search identified only a minimal amount of epidemiological information pertaining specifically to the older golfer. A number of case reports were found which described a variety of musculoskeletal and cardiovascular incidents involving senior players.

Research Shows Effectiveness of Balance Training

There was evidence from the literature that many of the age-related changes affecting older players' risk profiles were preventable or treatable through exercise, particularly balance training and balance exercise. It was the conclusion of the authors of this review that conditioning programmes were highly recommended for all older players irrespective of their level of participation. Not only could the programmes prevent injury, they also had the potential to improve performance. Such programmes should incorporate flexibility, strength, endurance, speed, balance training and balance exercises specifically tailored to the demands of golf in order to be effective. Exercise equipment did not need to be elaborate and home-based programmes incorporating bodyweight, weighted clubs balance training DVDs or elastic tubing resistance could be utilised.

Balance Training For Improving Balance In Older People

Balance Training Helps Improve Balance In Seniors

All of us love to have our opinions validated. Lately, there has been more and more research coming out to verify that performing balance training and balance exercise really does improve balance. On those days when we would rather relax in a recliner than get up and work on our balance, just remember that scientific studies really do show that practicing balance training exercises will reduce the number of falls and improve balance. One of those recent studies was published by Howe T.E

Balance Training Research Results

Background: Diminished ability to maintain balance AND DECREASED BALANCE STABLILITY may be associated with an increased risk of falling. In older adults, falls commonly lead to MUSCULOSKELETAL AND NEUROLOGICAL injury, loss of independence, Associated illness and early death. Although some exercise interventions with balance/STABILITY and muscle strengthening components have been shown to reduce falls. it is not known which elements, or combination of elements, of BALANCE TRAINING OR exercise interventions are most effective for improving balance in older people. This study attempted to present the best evidence for Effectiveness of BALANCE TRAINING AND exercise interventions designed to improve balance in older people living in the community or in institutional care.
RESULTS SHOW THAT Statistically significant improvements in balance ability were observed for BALANCE TRAINING AND BALANCE Exercise interventions compared to usual activity. Interventions involving gait; balance; BALANCE TRAINING; co-ordination and functional exercises; muscle strengthening; and multiple exercise types appear to have the greatest impact on indirect measures of balance.

Balance Exercises For Karate

Many Basic Balance Exercises Can Be Used For Karate

Karate is a very high level balance activity. When you break it down, some of the same basic balance principles and basic balance exercises used in karate are what we employ with standing and walking.
Here is a quick video on some basic karate balance moves: balance work in karate

Static And Dynamic Balance Exercises

As we saw in the video clip, in Karate an individual must be able to balance on one foot (static balance) while moving the other foot (dynamic balance). Standing on one foot in Karate takes enormous balance and strength. An advanced move in Karate involves being able to stand on one leg while moving, or kicking, the other leg. The amazing reality is that those two balance activities are the foundations of our walking motion. While we walk, there is a point in time when we stand on one foot and we move the other foot forward, preparing to take another step. There are basic balance exercises to improve balance-- both static balance and dynamic balance, which can be practiced by those of us just working on improving balance for walking or by high level athletes like those who perform Karate.

Balance Exercises For Seniors

Balance Exercises For Seniors

Balance exercises are important to perform as we move along in the years of our lives. Balance exercises help us maintain our sense of balance while moving around the house or while walking on challenging surfaces outside the home. As we age, the components of our balance system also age and become compromised. Statistics show that there is a greater risk of falling and injuring ourselves as we get older. Currently, statistics show that one in three individuals over the age of 60 fall every year, resulting in injuries like hip fractures and wrist fractures.

Balance Exercises For Aging Adults

Balance exercises should be performed on a daily basis for individuals over 50 years of age. Balance exercises need to be intentional and specific to develop the connections between the brain and a body to help improve balance. The notion that just standing and walking throughout the day will maintain balance abilities is a faults assumption. Specific balance exercises, with the intent of using sensory feedback from ones feet and focusing on ones balance point within the feet, are necessary to produce the desired balance skills.

Balance Training On Varying Surfaces

Balance Training Challenges On Foam

Some of you may think your balance is terrific and your balance training needs some higher level challenges. Great-- I have some ideas for you. Since the sensation from our feet provide one of the foundations of good balance, we can easily progress balance training activities and balance exercises by changing the surface we stand on. While standing on flat, hard surfaces, we are able to absorb the highest level of sensory input to help our balance during balance training.

Balance Training Taken To A Higher Level

To challenge your balance and balance training exercises, try standing on a compliant surface like foam or a couch cushion. The soft surface dampens the sensory feedback through the feet and makes balance more difficult, progressing the balance training. Another advanced surface for balance training is a rocker board or balance board. The wobbly, moving surface also challenges balance and enhances balance training techniques. Be sure to practice these more advanced balance training methods in a safe environment. When you challenge your balance with more difficult balance training, you will improve balance and be safer with every day activities like walking, navigating stairs and curbs. You will also feel more confident while being more active like playing with kids, grandkids, taking the dog for a walk, cleaning house, dancing or what ever it is that you enjoy.

Peripheral Neuropathy: An often-overlooked cause of falls in the elderly

Balance exercises help older adults with peripheral neuropathy

Recent information has proven that balance exercises can help with perpherial neuropathy. In a study, Richardson J.K. and Ashton-Miller J.A. looked at peripheral neuropathy and balance exercises to help prevent falls.
Balance Exercises Enhance Sensory Feedback

Balance exercises aid with peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is common in the elderly and results in impairments in distal proprioception and strength that hinder balance and predispose them to falls. The loss of heel reflexes, decreased vibratory sense that improves proximally, impaired position sense at the great toe, and inability to maintain unipedal stance for 10 seconds in three attempts all suggest functionally significant peripheral neuropathy. Physicians can help their patients with peripheral neuropathy to prevent falls by teaching them and their families about peripheral nerve dysfunction and its effects on balance and by advising patients to substitute vision for the lost somatosensory function, correctly use a cane, wear proper shoes and orthotics, and perform balance and upper extremity strengthening exercises.

Balance Exercises Help Peripheral Neuropathy

Balance exercises are the most effective way to help prevent falls and improve balance for folks with peripheral neuropathy.

Balance Exercises Following Hip Surgery

Balance Exercises For After Hip Surgery

Balance exercises are necessary to perform after hip surgery. During the process of a hip replacement surgery, the muscles in the hip are cut in order to insert the new hip components. Consequently, after hip surgery the muscles are in a weakened state. Because of hip muscle weakness, the patient walks with a noticeable limp. That gait pattern tends to throw the person off-balance. Therefore, balance exercises and strength exercises are important to help the recovery following hip surgery. balance exercises

Balance Exercises Following Hip Surgery

Balance exercises should be performed after hip surgery to counteract the decrease in balance abilities that follow surgery. Balance exercises should focus on using the sense of touch between the feet and the floor for sensory feedback to improve balance. Balance exercises should also include improving balance with walking and improving balance with standing. Balance exercises can be progressed to include challenge to balance activities on foam or rocker boards.

Basic Balance Exercises

Basic Balance Exercises

Balance exercises are important to practice on a daily basis for anyone 60 years of age or older because of the diminishing of the balance system with age. Balance exercises are also strategically essential to perform for anyone suffering with peripheral neuropathy, diabetes,
sciatica or following cancer treatments. Balance exercises are important for anyone suffering with dizziness or any kind of orthopedic or neurological problems that affect balance.

Foundational Balance Exercises

Balance exercises can begin at a very basic level and progress to higher-level activities. The most simple balance exercises in standing include finding one's balance point and maintaining balance with eyes opened on a hard, flat surface. Balance exercises can then be progressed to
standing on various surfaces and with the feet in various positions.

Balance Exercises For Various Footwear

Balance Exercises Needed For Different Footwear

Balance exercises are essential to maximize our balance abilities in all different situations, including different footwear. Our balance system relies on information from our eyes, inner ear and sensory feedback from our feet to keep us balanced and upright. If we change one of those components, our balance is greatly reduced. Lets take sensory input from our feet and different footwear as an example.
---- Watch this video on footwear: Balance exercises for footwear
When women wear high heels, they have a decreased base of support which reduces the sensory input to the brain. Also, high heel shoes pitch an individual forward, causing their center balance point to shift to their toes. This altering of the position of the balance point greatly diminishes balance ability and increases the risk of falling and being injured. Balance exercises and balance techniques are vital for improving balance and reducing falls. The best way to practice balance exercises is in flat shoes or even barefoot. Flat shoes or bare feet help to maximize sensory input from the feet to the brain to enhance balance.

Balance Exercises Lessen Dizziness With Movements

Balance Exercises For Dizziness With Movements

Balance exercises help us tolerate various movements as we get older. Balance exercises are necessary to do to avoid dizziness with movements. Our balance system includes a small organ in our inner ear called the vestibular system. The job of the vestibular system
is to detect all movements that we do such as turning ones head, bending over to tie shoes, getting up from a chair and much more. The vestibular system sends information about our movements to our brain, which then integrates that information with other sensory input. When we were kids, we loved to stimulate the vestibular system with extreme movements like swinging, riding on a merry-go-round or spinning in circles. As adults, the vestibular system ages and is less tolerable of movement. We cringe at the thought of a roller coaster ride. Consequently, it is important to practice balance exercises that gently stimulate the vestibular system, strengthen its function and enhance our balance abilities.
Watch a short video clip about balance exercises for movements: Balance exercises for dizziness

Balance Exercises To Strengthen The Vestibular System

Balance exercises performed with eyes closed help to isolate and strengthen the vestibular system. We can practice gentle balance exercises with eyes closed to stimulate the vestibular system to work harder and manage more difficult movements.

Improve Balance With Specific Footwear

Improve Balance With Flat Shoes

Amazingly enough, we can improve balance just by changing our footwear. I am astounded by those super models who can glide down a runway in six-inch heels. Watch a short video clip on walking in high heels: Balance Exercises For High Heels

Improve Balance With Bigger Base Of Support

One of the foundations of improving balance is to have a good base of support between our feet and the floor. For example, in tennis shoes or flat shoes we have lots of sensory input coming from the ground through our shoes into our feet. Tennis shoes offer a nice wide base of support for our feet to improve balance. In high-heeled shoes, the small heel substantially decreases our base of support and our sensory feedback from the ground, decreasing our balance abilities.
Furthermore, wearing high-heeled shoes pitches our center balance point forward so our weight is forward over our toes, diminishing our balance abilities. In one giant step, we can improve balance by changing from a heeled shoe to a flat shoe.

Balance Exercises Following Back Surgery

Balance Exercises After Back Surgery

Balance exercises are important to perform following back surgery. Many times previous to back surgery, our posture is altered in a forward bent or side bent position secondary to pain. One of the pillars of balance exercises is to center our weight as a plumb line coming through our body. The centering our weight balance exercise helps to improve posture following back surgery. Additionally, prior to back surgery there is usually leg pain, numbness and tingling associated with back pain. The extremity symptoms also alter posture with standing and walking, which diminishes balance abilities. Consequently, balance exercises to center the balance point in our feet are important to practice following back surgery. Balance exercises also help to focus on the sense of touch between the feet and a floor. Hopefully, this sense of touch in the feet is improved after back surgery and needs to be enhanced with balance exercises.

Balance Exercises Improve Strength After Back Surgery

Balance exercises are a key component of improving core muscle strength following back surgery. Balance exercises challenge the
body to tighten the core trunk muscles while performing various standing and walking activities. Balance exercises can be a gentle foundation of exercise to begin with following back surgery.

Balance Exercises For Walking The Dog

Balance Exercises For Walking The Dog

Balance exercises are important to stay on your feet while walking the dog. Far too often, we hear stories of people falling secondary to being pulled by their dog on a walk. Frequently, folks can get tangled in their dog's leash, trip on the leash and take a spill. In our neighborhood, rabbits run wild, enticing the dogs to take up chase. That is another opportunity to get pulled off-balance and fall. Balance exercises can help improve stability while walking. Balance exercises can also help to enhance balance reactions to be able to handle being pulled off-balance.
