Are Balance Exercises Better Than OPTOGENETICS?

Balance Exercises Or OPTOGENETICS?

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.combalance exercises Balance exercises have been proven by healthcare researchers to be beneficial for older adults who have balance problems to improve balance and reduce the risk and frequency of falling. Stability exercises have been determined to enhance leg strength for the muscles that contribute to balance reactions. Additionally, equilibrium routines have been shown to build confidence and reduce the fear of falling for those in the aging population. The new technique is called OPTOGENETICS. Can Optogenetics benefit individuals who struggle with balance disorders?

Balance Exercises VS Optogenetics

Balance exercises have been the bread and butter means of improving balance abilities and decreasing the frequency of falling for seniors. Optogenetics is a new field that scientists are working in to try to stimulate the brain to gain specific responses. So far, scientists have run optogenetic trials on lab animals using a selected wave length of light on a certain cell in the living brain. The purpose is to turn on or turn off specific cells, thereby modifying the animal's behavior. In terms of helping folks who have balance disorders, I imagine that this technique would be limited at best. The balance system in our brain is diverse over many, many areas. The brain contains numerous nuclei that absorb sensory information from the eyes, the inner ear and the body. The brain must correlate tons of impulses before sending out a corresponding message to the muscles for their responsive contractions. Thankfully, our balance system in our brain is highly redundant and not open to stimulating one specific area to produce radical improvement in balance abilities. In the long run, practicing balance exercises on a daily basis will be far more effective than optogenetics to improve balance and diminish falling.
