Statistics show that 25% to 40 % of Americans suffer from some degree of motion sickness, depending on the type of transportation they use for traveling. Motion sickness can be defined as a condition in which a disagreement exists between visually perceived movement and the inner ear's vestibular system's sense of movement. Basically, there is a sensory mismatch of information between the eyes and the inner ear. With motion sickness, our inner ear tells our brain that we are moving (like rocking on a boat or driving in a car), but our eyes tells the brain we are not moving. Additionally, the vestibular system's job is to monitor the body's movements and assist in controlling balance. When the brain gets a mixed signal about movement, you feel off balanced, nauseated and "sea sick." For most people, there are some tricks that help reduce the amount and discomfort of motion sickness. While riding in a car, the best solution is to be the driver so you are in control of the vehicle and can match visual cues of the moving car and road signs or other cars. If you can not drive, the best option is to sit in the front seat and look at the road ahead to try to minimize motion sickness.  Additionally, while riding in a car, be sure not to read a book or look at electronic devices, as that will increase your symptoms. If you are travelling on a boat, face the same direction you are heading and keep your eyes on the horizon to try to diminish symptoms of sea sickness. When travelling in a plane, try to sit in a window seat over the wing to give you a visual point to focus on. Furthermore, when riding in a train, face the direction you are moving and focus on a visual point inside the train to help you stabilize and reduce symptoms. Lastly, for all modes of transportation, you can use the body's sense of touch to help ground you, feel more balanced and reduce motion sickness.

For instance, when riding in a car, if you concentrate on the sense of touch between your back and legs in the seat and realize that you are in a stable, secure position, your brain will be able to dampen the feelings of motion sickness. In a recent study published by John H. Hollman; Francine M. Kovash; Jared J. Kubik; Rachel A. Linbo entitled, Age-related Differences in Spatiotemporal Markers of  Gait Stability During Dual Task Walking, these researchers investigated the relationship between balance exercises, walking and performing dual tasks. The researchers looked at the increase in stride-to-stride variability during walking which characterizes gait instability and predicts falling in older adults. The participants who walked while performing cognitive tasks (dual task walking) is also associated with increased risk of falling. In specific, the purpose of the study was to examine whether gait velocity and stride-to-stride variability in gait velocity differ in older adults compared with middle-aged and younger adults during normal and dual task walking conditions. The results showed that across groups, gait velocity was slower (p < 0.001) and stride-to-stride variability in gait velocity was greater ( p = 0.001) in dual task walking. Older subjects walked more slowly than did middle-aged and younger subjects and the difference in gait velocity was greatest in the dual task condition (p < 0.05). Variability in stride velocity was increased in older subjects compared with middle-aged and younger subjects (p < 0.05). Additionally, in older subjects, impaired walking performance was associated with impaired cognitive performance in dual task walking. The gait changes observed in dual task walking characterize decreased gait stability and indicate that cognitively demanding tasks during walking have a destabilizing effect on gait and may place older people at a greater risk of falling. As a result,  medical researchers have suggested that practicing balance exercises is imperative to help overcome the declines in balance abilities that occur with common dual task activities.

Melissa E. Chamberlin; Brandy D. Fulwider; Sheryl L. Sanders and John M. Medeiros published a study in Journals of Gerontology entitled, Does Fear of Falling Influence Spatial and Temporal Gait Parameters in Elderly Persons Beyond Changes Associated With Normal Aging? In their preparation for the study, the researchers found that there is limited research on fear of falling and its effect on gait parameters. Studies have shown a relationship between fear of falling and restriction of activities. They determined that the purpose of their study was to determine if a fear of falling in elderly persons was associated with changes in spatial and temporal gait parameters, independent of a history of falls. They hypothesized that, in elderly persons, gait changes would be associated with a preexisting fear of falling. Their study involved Ninety-five community-dwelling adults, aged 60-97 years (mean age = 74, standard deviation = 8.5). Participant scores on the Modified Falls Efficacy Scale determined an individual's placement into the "fearful" or "fearless" category. Spatial and temporal gait parameters of speed, stride length, step width, and double limb support time were assessed using the GAITRite system, a computerized electronic walkway. The researchers results showed that the fearful group had a significantly slower gait speed (p <.05) and shorter stride length (p <.05) when compared to the fearless group. Stride width was significantly longer (p =.05) and double limb support time was significantly prolonged (p <.05) in the fearful participants when measured against the fearless participants. The study revealed that there is support for the hypothesis that fear of falling does influence spatial and temporal gait parameter changes in elderly persons. Slower gait speed, shorter stride length, increased stride width, and prolonged double limb support time were found to be associated with a preexisting fear of falling.
