Why We Need Senior Balance Exercises As We Age

Necessity Of Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comJohn & Ann Betar, 101 & 97 yrs, married 80
The purpose of rehearsing senior balance exercises on a daily basis has a multitude of positive benefits. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Unfortunately, medical professionals have determined that there is a significant aging process that takes place in our balance system with each passing year in our later decades. The balance system has three main components: the eyes, inner ear vestibular system and the sensory input from feet and ankles. Each one of these components declines as we advance in years. Lets look in more detail at the diminishing function of the inner ear vestibular system. Most people are familiar with the problems associated with the aging of senses such as vision and hearing. Medical professionals have found, However, that the vestibular system is another sensory system that can also begin to function poorly with age, leading to a diminished quality of life. The vestibular system is a complex structure of fluid-filled loops and sacs that makes up part of the inner ear. Cranial nerves that connect to the inner ear have Specialized nerve endings inside these structures which detect the position and movement of the head and also detect the direction of gravity. The signals sent from the nerves of the vestibular system are critically important to the brain’s ability to control balance in standing and walking and also to control certain types of reflexive eye movements that make it possible to see clearly while walking or climbing stairs. Medical researchers have published Anatomical studies that have shown that the number of nerve cells in the vestibular system decreases from about age 55. Blood flow to the inner ear also decreases with age. characteristic bilateral vestibular loss becomes more severe as age progresses. When the vestibular system is damaged by any cause like a blow to the head or an inner ear infection, an individual may experience dizziness and balance problems. However, the gradual, age-related loss of vestibular nerve endings can result in severe balance problems without any associated dizziness. This type of slow loss of vestibular function may be first noticed as difficulty walking or standing, especially in the dark while on soft or uneven surfaces like grass or a thick carpet. Fortunately, balance abilities can be improved by rehearsing senior balance exercises on a daily basis.

Senior Balance Exercises Help With Age Related Declines

Health professionals have determined that as we age our natural balance system components decline , requiring us to perform senior balance exercises on a consistent daily basis to enhance stability and reduce the potential of a fall. The good news is that by rehearsing equilibrium routines regularly older adults are able to advance their balance abilities and slow the effects of the balance system's natural declines. You can start a stability routine by standing with one foot directly behind the other foot in a tandem position,  with your weight centered in the middle of your feet.  In this position with a narrow base of support, you will challenge your balance reactions at your feet and ankles, enhancing the speed and strength of those balance reactions. This and a progression of senior balance exercises will help to enhance your steadiness with all movement activities. You can learn this series of senior balance exercises by following the lead of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Use Senior Balance Exercises To Strengthen Ankles

Senior Balance Exercises Help With Ankle Reactions

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comBalance Exercises And Coordination Training For An Unstable Ankle
As we age, senior balance exercises become even  more important to rehearse regularly to not only improve balance to reduce the risk of falling but to also enhance balance reactions at the ankles. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now In our later years,  most  of us over the age of sixty tend to experience predictable patterns of physical decline that result in poor balance abilities. As the years march on, our balance system components diminish in effectiveness as each one of the components succumb to their individual aging process. To be more specific, our balance system is composed of information from our eyes, inner ear vestibular system and feedback from our feet and ankles. As we carry on in years, our eyesight diminishes, our hearing is compromised and our ankles become stiffer and weaker. The results of this aging process is a reduction in balance abilities, including decreased balance reactions at the feet and ankles. The balance reactions in our feet and ankles are critical to maintaining an upright posture and to combat against falls.  Our balance reactions are designed to respond to all changes in the body's position as well as respond to different surfaces below our feet such as ice, grass, rocks or uneven hiking trails. In the home, balance reactions accommodate to varying surfaces like thick carpet, hardwood floors or tile.  In specific, the balance system in our brain receives incoming information from our eyes, ears, muscles and joints from our feet and ankles.  The balance system in our brain then integrates all the incoming information and sends back out an appropriate motor response to the muscles in the lower legs and ankles to contract appropriately to maintain good balance and upright position. The problem many older adults encounter is that as we age our balance reactions are diminished secondary to this stiffness and weakness in our ankles.

Senior Balance Exercises And Activating Ankle Muscles

Since having strong balance reactions at the feet and ankles is so critical, practicing senior balance exercises on a daily basis is the best way to improve balance reactions at the feet and ankles.  By performing equilibrium exercises, the body is able to strengthen the connections between the brain and the body that are necessary for good balance. Stability exercises challenge the balance reactions at the feet and ankles, thereby reactivating balance skills that are typically reduced during the aging process. Certain equilibrium routines emphasize working on balance reactions at the feet. For instance, if you stand with your feet in a narrow base of support like with one foot in front of the other, you will notice that your feet and ankles wobble quite a bit. That wobbling action is your natural balance reactions at work, getting stronger and faster as you perform this exercise.  Now you can follow along with a balance exercise routines developed by an experienced physical therapist to practice appropriate stability exercises on a daily basis at home with the Exercise For  Balance DVD.

Companion Confidence In Balance Capability And Senior Balance Exercises

Promote Senior Balance Exercises For Companion

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comwalking balance exercises
Companions of older adults can be powerful positive influencers of practicing senior balance exercises for those in the aging population. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Social relationships have strong influence over us, even as we age. The confidence that a close companion, whether spouse, adult children or healthcare provider for an elderly individual, can have in determining the balance abilities of an older loved one is highly influential. Recently, healthcare professionals looked at the relationship of a close companion and their opinion of the steadiness of an aging person. Cavanaugh, James T. PT and others recently documented a study, Companion Confidence in the Balance of Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Implications for Physical Activity Promotion, that investigated how social relationships influence activity levels and exercise regimes for those with balance impairments. The researchers looked into how positive social relationships may increase the intention of older adults to be physically active. In the presence of balance impairments, however, the potential influence of a familiar companion on an older adult's physical activity is not well understood. The purpose of this preliminary investigation was to explore companion confidence in the balance capability of an older adult as a potential determinant of older adult physical activity. The researchers found that older adults and their companions did not necessarily share similar confidence in the older adult's balance capability. Companion confidence, especially when
markedly less than older adult confidence, showed promise as a predictor of older adult physical activity. As a result, companions of senior citizens who have balance problems can be powerful influencers to advocate for continued physical activity, including promoting practicing senior balance exercises.

Daily Senior Balance Exercises

By practicing senior balance exercises as a regular routine, aging individuals can improve balance and safely remain active for years to come. Older adults can be motivated to rehearse equilibrium exercises every day by the motivation of a loved one. By performing stability routines together, loved ones can help enhance balance abilities in their companion as well as improving their own steadiness skills. For example, together you can start a stability program by practicing a basic balance exercise like standing on one foot and maintaining your body weight in the center of your arch. You can learn this senior balance exercise and a step by step progression of additional equilibrium exercises by following the direction of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.

Safe Gardening With Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises For Gardening

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
As Winter turns to Spring and the trees and plants start to bud, it is time to practice specific balance exercises to stay safe while working in the garden. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Gardening is a fantastic activity that enhances physical, emotional and mental well being. Gardening, however, involves many various movements and positions, which necessitate having good balance. Gardening activities can include weeding, raking, clipping bushes, picking up bags of clippings, planting bushes or seeds, mowing and moving dirt or rocks just to name a few activities. To participate in the joys of  gardening, an individual must maintain their steadiness while
- bending over
-reaching
-lifting
-dragging hoses
-pulling weeds
-pushing a lawn mower
-stepping on or over rocks, railroad ties and various other items
Consequently, in order to prevent falling during these challenging activities, it is essential to practice certain balance exercises to develop adequate stability before heading out to the garden.

Begin Balance Exercises Before Gardening

To enjoy safe and fun gardening, it is recommended that you learn a few specific steadiness strategies and rehearse certain  balance exercises before digging in. In order to safely bend down during gardening activities, you should first learn how to center your body weight in the middle of your arches. Next, you can perform a balance exercise where you stand with your weight centered in your feet and control shifting your weight forwards into your toes and back into the center of your feet. By practicing this weight shifting exercise, you will be more aware of where your body's balance point is and how to control your body weight so you do not just lean forward and then fall forwards on to the ground. Additionally, you can also rehearse an equilibrium routine where you step forwards, like in a lunge movement, and back to your original position. This dynamic movement pattern will help to enhance your steadiness for getting up from the ground or for lifting items off the ground. To enjoy the most out of the great outdoors and a wonderful growing experience with gardening, begin a balance exercise program by following the expert instruction of an well respected Physical Therapist in the Exercise for Balance DVD.

Stay Independent With Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Independent Living

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Being independent for as long as possible is a critical goal for many older adults and that aim can be maximized by performing senior balance exercises every day. Most of us are highly motivated to continue with our activities of daily living independently for as long as possible http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now There are many activities that are near and dear to our hearts to remain as independent in as possible including:
-Driving
-Dressing, showering and grooming
-Cooking, grilling and fixing a meal
-Walking, moving around the home safely or navigating up and down stairs
-Gathering with friends and family
-Participating in social activities
-Maintining a home

These are some but not all of the events that older folks hold near and dear to their hearts to stay independent in for as long as possible. Consequently, it is essential for aging individuals to rehearse senior balance exercises on a regular basis to improve steadiness and reduce the risk of falling, which would greatly limit their independence.

Senior Balance Exercises Help Improve Stability

A daily routine of senior balance exercises can assist in developing excellent steadiness during movement activities to stay upright and safe at home. Unfortunately, the statistics of senior citizens falling is staggering. healthcare professionals estimate that one in three older adults fall every year. Most of the time those falls result in fractures, such as a hip fracture or wrist fracture. Once a fracture occurs, the aging individual often times undergoes surgery and is forced to deal with walking with a cane or walker or having their arm in a cast or sling. These restrictions lead to a significant decline in independence with all activities of daily living. The best way to battle a potential fall is to rehearse specific equilibrium exercises on a consistent basis. stability routines that involves static holding, like standing on one foot, is a good place to begin. additionally, steadiness exercises can be progressed to dynamic routines like standing on one foot and swinging the other foot forwards and backwards to challenge movement balance. You can learn these senior balance exercises and certain stability strategies that will help keep you safe and independent ast home by following the direction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Walking On An Incline And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Stability With Walking

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Thankfully, medical researchers continue to study the effects of senior balance exercises on every day activites like walking up an incline. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now As our population continues to age, medical professionals are fighting the battle of falls among the elderly. They are asking pertinent questions in order for us all to become aware of how to prevent falls and costly injuries among our older population. Recently, in the Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy an article was published, Effects of an Inclined Walking Surface and Balance Abilities on Spatiotemporal Gait Parameters of Older Adults, which investigated the dynamics of senior citizens walking up inclines and their potential for falling during that activity.

Senior Balance Exercises And Challenged Walking

The medical researchers who looked at balance abilities of older adults navigating their way up an incline also join other healthcare professionals in recommending senior balance exercises for all aging individuals to help improve stability and limit the potential of a fall. In their research, they  examined the effects of an inclined walking surface and balance abilities on various spatiotemporal gait parameters of healthy older adults. The medical researchers found that Healthy older adults adopt a more stable gait pattern on inclines decreasing velocity and spending more time in the double support despite the increased
physiological demands to perform this task. Clear changes were evident between level and incline surfaces regardless of fall risk as defined by two different objective balance measures. From this study, we can learn that slowing down and walking at a more deliberate pace is helpful fro older individuals. During a slightly slower walking speed, the person is able to concentrate on the sensory input from their feet, which is one of the basic stability strategies taught in the exercise for balance DVD. Additionally, the study demonstrates that an elderly person's steadiness is better with a double support stance phase. This principle correlates with the senior balance exercises that are taught by a knowledgeable physical therapist in the balance DVD. you can learn the appropriate stability strategies and senior balance exercises in the convenience of your own home with the exercise for balance DVD.

Senior Balance Exercises For Those In Assisted Living

Walking And Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comwalking balance exercises
For those aging individuals who reside in an assisted living facility, practicing senior balance exercises every day can help enhance stability for safe walking. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Recently, a group of medical researchers evaluated the effectiveness of a walking program for older adults who reside in an assisted living facility. Johnson, Jenna A. MSc PT, MSc Kin and cohorts published a study, Feasibility Study of Walking for Exercise in Individuals Living in Assisted Living Settings, which detailed walking programs for those senior citizens who living in assistance homes. The investigators indicated that decreased physical activity levels are an increasing concern, specifically for the aging population. Older adults (>65 years) are able to achieve health
benefits from participating in a regular exercise program based on studies done in younger community-dwelling older adults. There is less research investigating the efficacy of exercise for improving physical function among the older adult population in assisted living settings. This study investigated using a treadmill with a harness system, to engage older adults in aerobic exercise. The primary objective of the study was to assess the feasibility of a large trial by evaluating the recruitment and short-term retention rate of older adults with limited mobility. The researchers found that treadmill participants were able to achieve the American College of Sports Medicine's recommended intensity and frequency for aerobic exercise. For older adults in assisted living settings to achieve 20 minutes a day, they may need more than 3 weeks of progression or multiple sessions per day. The first step to start a walking program for older individuals is to begin with stability routines to build a strong foundation of steadiness and to limit any potential of falling.

Practice Senior Balance Exercises For safe Walking

The first step for a safe walking program is to rehearse senior balance exercises as part of a regular fitness routine. There are specific equilibrium exercises for senior citizens to perform before initiating a walking regime. For instance, older adults can begin with standing on one foot and centering their body weight in the middle of their arch. As they become more proficient with this balance routine, they will develop excellent static stability. The next step after mastering static balance is to develop dynamic balance. One dynamic balance routine involves standing on one foot and swing the other foot through as if you are taking a step. This equilibrium routine combines static and dynamic steadiness which is essential to advance before starting a brisk walking program. To learn the appropriate senior balance exercises needed for a good walking program, you can follow the instruction of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance dvd.

Fear Of Falling? Try Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Prevent Falls

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Being afraid to fall is a common condition among older adults that can be alleviated by practicing senior balance exercises as a regular routine. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Studies done at the Harvard Medical School report that falling is a major concern among the elderly since one in three older individuals tend to fall every year. For those in the aging population that have ever felt dizzy, lightheaded, or as if the room were spinning around them, those symptoms are quite common among senior citizens and  those feelings can be very troublesome sensations. If the feeling happens often, it could be a sign of a balance problem. Balance problems are among the most common reasons that older adults seek help from a doctor. In 2008, an estimated 14.8 percent of American adults (33.4 million) had a balance or dizziness problem during the past year. One way to combat balance problems is to practice stability exercises to improve overall steadiness. Having good balance means being able to control and maintain your body's position, whether you are moving or remaining still. An intact sense of balance helps you
  • walk without staggering
  • get up from a chair without falling
  • climb stairs without tripping
  • bend over without falling

Senior Balance Exercises Enhance Steadiness

By performing senior balance exercises every day, an older individual can enhance steadiness and reduce their fear of falling. A sense of confidence with movement activities comes with the ability to strengthen balance skills through rehearsing specific stability strategies and equilibrium routines. Good balance is important to help you get around, stay independent, and carry out daily activities. As they get older, many people experience problems with their sense of balance. They feel dizzy or unsteady, or as if they or their surroundings were in motion. Disturbances of the inner ear are a common cause of felling unsteady. Vertigo, the feeling that you or the things around you are spinning, is also a common symptom.  Falls and fall-related injuries, such as hip fracture, can have a serious impact on an older person's life. If you fall, it could limit your activities or make it impossible to live independently. Many people often become more isolated after a fall. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly more than one-third of adults ages 65 years and older fall each year. Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths. The best way to improve balance and avoid falls is to practice senior balance exercises every day. Now you can follow the instruction of an experienced physical therapist who will show you how to balance and which stability exercises to do in the exercise for balance dvd.

Benefits Of Practicing Senior Balance Exercises At Home

Importance Of Doing Senior Balance Exercises At Home

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comJohn & Ann Betar, 101 & 97 yrs, married 80
A daily routine of senior balance exercises can assist aging individuals to stay steady and avoid falling at home. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and others all agree that rehearsing steadiness exercises is critical to maintain balance and prevent falls for older adults. One means of rehearsing equilibrium exercises is to initiate home health care from a medical provider. Home health care is costly. Yet, on the other hand, the overall costs of falls are staggering. Costs related to falls in 2000 were 19 billion, with projections by 2020 of 54.9 billion US dollars. Shumway-Cook et al reported that Medicare home health care costs in the United States for older adults who had fallen 2 or more times with home care costs accounted for 5% of the total Medicare care costs versus 34% of the total health care costs spent on inpatient rehabilitation and another 13% spent on out-patient care. Home health care utilization in the 6 months after fracture for Medicare recipients in the United States between 2000 and 2004 received a mean of 25 hours of physical therapy (PT) services after acute care hospitalization and 20 hours for occupational therapy. Home exercise programs that emphasize balance and strengthening in female community-living adults over the age of 80 years seem to reduce medical costs with less fall events. Campbell et al reported changes in the number of falls in women older than 80 years who participated in a home exercise program customized by a physical therapist. Now, you can rehearse senior balance exercises developed by an experienced physical therapist by following along with the Exercise For Balance DVD.
