Modern Dancers And Balance Exercises

Modern Dancers And Their Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
To the casual observer, modern dance as well as ballet can be a beautiful expression of balance exercises in action. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now For those involved in the upper echelon of dance, dancing eight hours a week is work, not just a casual workout. For example, Fana Tesfagiorgis is a member of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. As a professional dance, Fana Tesfagiorgis described her workouts at the gym outside of dance rehearsals to include strength training, balance exercises, cardiovascular fitness routines and flexibility exercises. As one who performs in a modern dance company, Fana Tesfagiorgis suggests that "You have to do a lot more than dance" to stay competitive in her field. For non impact balance  training, she runs through several ballet maneuvers in the middle of the room, away from the barre. Ms Tesfagiorgis says, "Not having the barre for balance means a lot more core work."  Additionally, she describes doing an hour long Floor Barre workout once a week. She details that these exercises  are "much like what we do at the barre, but they are done very slowly, while trying to use the muscles in the most efficient way possible. These exercises allow me to notice muscular imbalances."

Balance Exercises For Dancers

To be an exceptional dancer, one must practice core strengthening routines and balance exercises to attain optimal stability during all maneuvers.  Additionally, to be a recreational dancer just for the exercise and fun of it, it is also essential to practice equilibrium routines to enhance steadiness and to be safe with all the twirling and turning involved in dancing. Before hitting the dance floor as a weekend warrior or as a professional, you can rehearse basic to advanced steadiness routines like standing on one foot and moving the other foot in slow and circular motions. Now there is a professionally filmed Exercise For Balance DVD, developed by an experienced Physical Therapist that you can perform in the comfort of your own home to help you build excellent balance skills, leg strength and core muscle strength that is needed for all levels of dancing. With the DVD, you can begin at a basic level and progress through every stage to enable you to improve your steadiness and prepare yourself to hit the dance floor safely.

Senior Balance Exercises Help Prevent Wrist Fractures

Practice Senior Balance Exercises To Avoid Fractures

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
One way to limit the possibility of falling and sustaining a common wrist fracture is to practice balance exercises on a regular basis to enhance stability. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now The most common wrist fracture that can occur secondary to a fall is a wrist fracture, sometimes known as a Colles' Fracture.  The forearm contains two bones, the radius and the ulna. A Colles’ fracture is a fracture or break of the end of the radius bone in the forearm. Typically during a Colles' fracture, there is a displacement between the wrist and forearm, resulting in what is called a dinner fork or bayonet fracture because of how the fracture appears. In a Colles' fracture, the part of the bone that is closer to the hand,  the distal radius, is displaced dorsally, towards the top of the forearm. Often times, a Colles' fracture results in fragmenting of the distal radius bone. When there are fragments of the radius or significant angulation and deformity, the individual may require an open reduction and internal fixation or external fixation surgery to repair the fracture. If the fracture is small and has mild angulation and displacement, then the person may require closed reduction, followed by casting for 6-8 weeks. Colles’ fractures most often occur secondary to an individual falling onto a hard surface and breaking their fall with outstretched arms . Colles' fractures are most often seen in elderly people, post menopausal women or individuals with osteoporosis.

Senior Balance Exercises For Fall Prevention

Medical researchers have ascertained that by practicing balance exercises every day, a person can improve their steadiness and sensory awareness that will help to diminish the risk and incidence of falling and incurring a Colles' fracture. As a  physical therapist, we work on stability exercises with most all of our patients. Since the balance system components decline in function as we age for all of us, it is essential that we include routines that focus on controlling a person's weight shifting front to back and side to side. These weight shifting exercises enable the individual to control their center balance point, in order to keep them from falling if they are leaning forward.  Additionally, equilibrium exercises help to strengthen the person’s balance reactions at their feet and ankles, which enable them to respond appropriately to challenging balance situations, thereby decreasing the risk of losing their balance and falling. Now you can practice a professionally developed senior exercise balance program in the convenience and safety of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Snow Blowers And Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises For Using A Snow Blower

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comAriens Path-Pro Snow Blower
Balance exercises can be helpful to practice before heading out to the icy and snowy driveway to use a snow blower. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now With a hard hitting Winter upon us, many of us have experienced a snowy and icy past few months. Even this morning, I got up early to shovel the snow off my driveway and sidewalks. Thankfully, I was able to employ some basic balance techniques to stay on my feet and avoid slipping and falling. It is highly recommended to practice stability exercises before revving up the snow blower and tackling the snow outside of your home.

Balance Exercises For Snow Removal

Rehearsing balance techniques and balance exercises before heading out on the slippery driveway after a snow storm is highly recommended. The first step is to learn the stability strategy of centering your body weight evenly over your feet. By centering your body weight within the base of support of your feet, you automatically focus on the sensory input from your feet to the balance center in your brain. That concentration on sensory input aids in enhancing overall steadiness. Additionally, in icy or snowy conditions, it is recommended that you use a lower center of gravity and wider base of support, which will maximize your balance abilities. You can lower your center of gravity by slightly bending your knees as you navigate a snow blower or bend down in a squat position to scoop up a shovel load of snow. One benefit of using a snow blower is that you have an additional sensory contact through your hands and the bar on the snow blower. This extra sensory input through your hands to the balance center in the brain will also help you to be more stable as you navigate with the snow blower. On the other hand, one disadvantage of the snow blower can be the greater effort that is needed to circumvent corners. when changing direction with a snow blower, it is advisable to make the motion slow and steady and to concentrate on the sensory input from your feet to the ground as you make the turn. You can rehearse these stability strategies and balance exercises in the safety and convenience of your own home before stepping out into the snowy environment by following the direction of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.

Ski Jumpers Need Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises And Ski Jumpinghp-events-tease.jpg

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
One group of people who need to practice balance exercises are the women ski jumpers that are finally competing in the Winter Olympics this year. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Three of the top women ski jumpers in the world were nominated to represent the U.S. on the first-ever Olympic women’s ski jumping team. Lindsey Van, Jessica Jerome, and Sarah Hendrickson will make their historic Winter Games debut on Feb. 11 in Sochi, Russia. After a decade-long push, the 2014 Olympic Winter Games mark the first time a women’s ski jumping event is included at the Olympic level. “This inaugural Olympic women's ski jumping team has already inspired so many people around the world and will continue to do so for years to come,” said Alan Alborn, head coach for Women’s Ski Jumping USA (WSJ-USA). The three women representing the USA in women's ski jumping all have remarkable backgrounds. Jerome, 26, a 10-time national champion and international leader in the sport, secured her nomination after winning the 2014 U.S. Olympic Trials Dec. 29. Lindsey Van, 29, was the first women’s world champion in ski jumping and was pivotal in getting the sport into the Olympics for women. Sarah Hendrickson, 19, is the reigning world champion and first-ever women’s World Cup circuit champion. She was selected to the team after a promising return to snow following an August knee injury. According to Alborn, “They are strong athletes and strong individuals because of the challenges and hardships they have faced both in the sport and outside of it. They have built this path to the Olympic Games brick-by-brick and they have done most of the heavy lifting.”

Balance Exercises Needed For Ski Jumping

Strength training and balance exercises are just two of the many components that ski jumpers need to rehearse to compete at the high levels of their sport. One of the basic requirements of a top competitor in ski jumping is having an acute awareness and control of their body's center of gravity. Ski Jumpers must be able to maintain a perfect alignment of their center mass as they take off, soar through the air and land down the jump. If they for one split second lose control of their body's weight shifting then certain disaster will be instantly upon them. We can learn from their high level balance skills to stay safe in whatever activities we participate in at home or outside of the home. To start, we can learn to center our body weight by standing with feet shoulder width a part and centering our body weight in the middle of our feet. Next, we can learn to control our body weight as it moves by shifting forwards, backwards and side to side. These balance techniques and balance exercises can be practiced in the convenience of our own homes by following the direction of an experienced Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Stop Stumbling- Start Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises Help Prevent FallsBalance Exercises On The Swiss Ball Following A Stroke

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
The best way to stop those nagging stumbles that can lead to dangerous falls is to rehearse balance exercises every day. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now If you are an older individual or if you know some one who is in their sixties or older, this information comes highly recommended. Medical researchers have determined that falls are the most common reason why older adults head to the Emergency Room each year. statistics suggest that one in three senior citizens fall every year. The number of Emergency Room visits that are due to falls is as high as ninety-two percent. Many times falls are preceded by a stumble or trip of some sort, which develops into a loss of balance. When the older individual is unable to recover their balance, that stumble leads to a fall. Such falls create  life changing injuries such as hip, wrist, shoulder fractures and head injuries. In addition to falls being painful, they are also costly to the person and to the entire medical system. Furthermore, falls rob aging individuals of their independence and quality of life.  A daily dose of equilibrium routines can make the difference in improving steadiness and avoiding the potential of a fall.

Balance Exercises To Stay On Your Feet

Medical researchers have found that Practicing balance exercises is the best way to advance stability skills and to maintain an upright position in all standing and moving activities. Additionally, removing all items of clutter from the floor can decrease the risk of catching your toe and tripping or stumbling, which could lead to a fall. By rehearsing equilibrium routines regularly, the individual gives the brain and the body the chance to establish essential connections between the sensory input from the feet and ankles and the balance system in the brain. These strong connections enable the body to react to changes in the surface underground, like moving from hardwood floors to thick carpet or from a cement sidewalk to deep grass. One way for older adults to develop strong balance reactions is to stand in a position with a narrow base of support. One such position involves standing in a tandem stance with one foot directly in front of the other foot. This narrow position encourages the balance reactions at the ankles to work overtime, wobbling back and forth. The steadiness exercise advances the balance reactions at the feet and ankles, which are connected to the balance system in the brain. Additionally, this stability routine builds strong muscles in the lower leg and ankles, which are necessary for good balance. You can rehearse these balance exercises in the comfort of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD, developed by an experienced Physical Therapist , who will take you through each exercises step by step and at your own pace.

Heart Failure Reduced With Balance Exercises And Fitness

Balance Exercises And Physical Fitness: Good For The Heart

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comBalance for biking
Starting with balance exercises and adding in physical activities can be a huge benefit to the heart. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers have determined that there are two key components to reducing heart failure. The two critical criteria are:
1) high levels of physical activity
 2) low levels of sedentary time
Deborah Rohm Young, Ph.D., lead researcher and a senior scientist at Kaiser Permanente in Pasadena, Calif, published a study that examined the link between heart failure risk and sedentary time. Young's study concluded, “Be more active and sit less. That’s the message here.” Researchers followed a racially diverse group of 84,170 men ages 45 to 69 without heart failure. Exercise levels were calculated in METs, or metabolic equivalent of task, a measure of the body’s energy use. Sedentary levels were measured in hours.  After an average of nearly eight years of follow-up, researchers found:
>>  Men with low levels of physical activity were 52 percent more likely to develop heart failure than men with high physical activity levels, even after adjusting for differences in sedentary time.
>>  Outside of work, men who spent five or more hours a day sitting were 34 percent more likely to develop heart failure than men who spent no more than two hours a day sitting, regardless of how much they exercised.
>>  Heart failure risk more than doubled in men who sat for at least five hours a day and got little exercise compared to men who were very physically active and sat for two hours or less a day.

Begin A Fitness Program With Balance Exercises

The most important first step to take to meet the two criteria of increasing physical activity and decreasing sedentary time is to begin to develop essential steadiness with balance exercises.  The last thing you want to do is embark on a physical fitness routine, lose balance, fall and injure yourself. Consequently, before heading out for a power walk, it is highly recommended to initiate basic equilibrium exercises to enhance your balance skills and reduce any potential for falling. You can follow a detailed step by step balance program, developed by an experienced Physical Therapist by following along with the Exercise For Balance DVD before you ever step foot outside of your house on a brisk walk or bike ride.

Balance Exercises For Patellar Tendonitis

Balance Exercises Help With Patellar Tendonitis

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
The condition of Jumper's Knee or Patellar tendonitis can be very painful and performing basic balance exercises can help with increasing stability and reducing pain while healing from the pain. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Patellar tendonitis is an injury that affects the tendon connecting your kneecap (patella) to your shinbone (tibia). The patellar tendon plays a pivotal role in the way you use your leg muscles. The Patellar Tendon helps your muscles extend your knee so that you can kick a ball, run uphill and jump up in the air. Patellar tendonitis is most common in athletes whose sports involve frequent jumping — such as basketball and volleyball. For this reason, patellar tendonitis is commonly known as jumper's knee. However, even people who don't participate in jumping sports can experience patellar tendonitis. For instance, patellar tendonitis is a common condition that can occur after someone goes through Anterior Cruciate Ligament surgery. The pain from patellar tendonitis is especially noticeable when going up or down stairs and when getting in and out of a chair. This pain can easily throw an individual off balance and cause them to fall.  For most people, treatment of patellar tendonitis begins with physical therapy to stretch and strengthen the muscles around the knee, as well as to practice balance exercises to limit the potential for falling.

Balance Exercises For Patellar Tendonitis

Balance exercises, icing, stretching and strengthening exercises are all a part of the rehabilitation program for healing from  Patellar Tendonitis. since Patellar Tendonitis can be quite painful and irritating, it is optimal to start weight easy exercises. one such basic equilibrium routine involves standing with feet shoulder width a part and shifting weight side to side and front to back. this exercise will help develop good control of shifting one's body weight, which is a necessary basic component of good steadiness. additionally, this weight shifting exercise will begin to gently strengthen the quadriceps muscle in the front of the thigh, which is the muscle that the patella tendon attaches to the shin bone. you can practice these beginning strengthening and balance exercises as well as progress to more difficult routines when you are ready by following along with an experienced physical therapist in the exercise for balance dvd.

Physical Activity And Balance Exercises For Older Men

Combination Of Physical Activity And Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comBalance for biking
Being physically active and practicing balance exercises can be critically important for older men. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers have presented new studies that link the benefits of physical activity with a foundation of balance exercises for men in their later years. According to two studies published by Journal of Physical Activity & Health, researchers show that physical activity is very beneficial for older men. The results of one reports exercise it significantly extends the lives of senior cancer and cardiovascular disease survivors, and the other concludes that physical fitness reduces heart failure risk. Medical researchers studied 1,021 senior men with an average age of 71. During the period while the men were followed, those who expended more than 12,600 calories per week in physical activity were 48 percent less likely to die of any cause than those who burned fewer than 2,100 calories per week. Additionally,  the researchers found that sitting for long periods increases heart failure risk in men (ages 45 to 69), even for those who exercise regularly. Many cancer survivors are living longer, due to earlier diagnosis and better treatment, and their numbers are increasing rapidly. "Thus physical activity should be actively promoted to such individuals to enhance longevity," researchers concluded. There has been extensive research showing that among generally healthy, cancer-free populations, physical activity extends longevity. But there has been relatively little such research on physical activity among cancer survivors. Kathleen Y. Wolin, PhD, of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, is co-author of the study, published in the official journal of the International Society for Physical Activity and Health. Researchers examined data from the Harvard Alumni Health Study, an ongoing study of men who entered Harvard as undergraduates between 1916 and 1950. Researchers looked at 1,021 men (average age 71) who previously had been diagnosed with cancer. In questionnaires conducted in 1988, men reported their physical activities, including walking, stair-climbing and participation in sports and recreational activities. Their physical activities were updated in 1993, and the men were followed until 2008. Compared with men who expended fewer than 2,100 calories per week in physical activity, men who expended more than 12,600 calories per week were 48 percent less likely to die of any cause during the follow-up period. The first step to starting a fitness program is to build a strong foundation of steadiness by performing balance exercises.

Balance Exercises Before Physical Activity

Performing balance exercises on a regular basis can prepare you to establish excellent stability needed to begin a physical fitness program. Medical researchers have determined that rehearsing equilibrium routines helps to enhance stability with all walking and moving activities. By developing good balance first, you will be able to safely start a fitness routine of walking, weight lifting, biking, tennis, golf or whatever physical activity is enjoyable for you. Healthcare workers strongly suggest that men engage in fitness routines on a consistent basis to help maintain adequate leg strength and cardiovascular health. You can learn the appropriate balance exercises needed to develop excellent stability by following the direction of an experienced Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Hip Dysplasia And Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises For Stability With Hip Dysplasia

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Balance exercises  are a key aspect of safe living for individuals diagnosed with hip Dysplasia. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Hip dysplasia is the medical term for a hip socket that doesn't fully cover the ball portion of the upper thighbone. Most people with hip dysplasia are born with the condition. If hip dysplasia is diagnosed in early infancy, a brace can usually correct the problem. Some people with hip dysplasia don't develop symptoms until later in life. In those cases, surgery may eventually be needed to reduce pain and improve function. One of the main concerns for people with  hip dysplasia is instability with walking and movement activities, leading to a greater risk for falling and sustaining an injury like a hip or wrist fracture. With hip dysplasia, since the ball portion of the femur  and the socket of the pelvis are not joined as securely because of the deformity, greater instability ensues.   Even if surgery is not warranted right away, practicing balance exercises can help enhance steadiness and limit the potential for falling.

Balance Exercises Increase Stability

The optimal way to enhance steadiness and reduce the risk of falling for people with hip dysplasia is to perform balance exercises on a regular schedule. Some of the  additional benefits of rehearsing equilibrium routines is that they enhance both steadiness and needed leg strength. An individual who is diagnosed with hip dysplasia relies more heavily on strong muscles at the hip. Consequently, rehearsing stability routines can help to develop muscle strength as well as speedy balance reactions. one appropriate equilibrium exercise to practice for a person with hip dysplasia is standing on one foot. by performing a single leg stance, the individual can improve their balance for a task that is needed with walking. during a normal walking movement, the person stands on one foot while the other foot swings through to take a step. during that single leg stance of walking, the hip muscles must be strong to hold the pelvis level, keeping the individual steady with each step. consequently, practicing standing on one foot advances both balance and necessary hip muscle strength. you can practice this balance exercises and other needed strength exercises by following along with the exercise for balance DVD, developed for you to perform in the comfort of your own home by a knowledgeable physical therapist.

Olympic Mogul Skiing And Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises Help Dominate In Mogul Skiing

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
With the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi coming up quickly,  Olympic mogul skier Heather McPhie is training hard with cardiovascular workouts, strength training and balance exercises to get ready. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Heather McPhie competes in mogul skiing which involves hurtling down a ski slope that is covered with boulder-sized bumps and jumps. Each skier must not only navigate the moguls smoothly and as fast as possible, but also throw in a series of flips and twists off the jumps. To prepare for the Olympics, Heather McPhie has focused on increasing her endurance and balance to complete each thirty second run up to five times a day. Heather McPhie's workouts include a grueling schedule of circuit workouts, involving wall sits, knee bends, box jumps-- all while holding free weights to enhance the intensity.  McPhie also pushes the limit with long distance cycling to bump up her endurance factor. Additionally, she routinely practices balance exercises to hone her take offs and landings for her twists and turns in the air off the jumps.

Balance Exercises For Improving Balance

We may not all be heading to the Olympics this Winter, but balance exercises can be helpful to enhance stability for older adults or advance competition levels for athletes of all sports. One of the most important aspects of having excellent steadiness with all movement activities is to understand how to center as well as how to control one's body weight. One of the most common reasons for falling comes from the person's loss of the ability to pull their body weight back to the center once their body weight has moved beyond midline. Whether you are Heather McPhie needing to keep her body centered as she performs a flip off a jump in the middle of a mogul run or whether you have a parent with instability and has a history of falling, we can all enhance our safety with movement activities by practicing equilibrium routines. You can learn specific stability strategies and balance exercises in the Exercise For Balance DVD, developed by an experienced Physical Therapist and designed to enhance your balance no matter what level you are starting with.

Need For Preoperative Balance Exercises

Recommend Balance Exercises Before Surgery

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/
Balance exercises  are an essential component of preparing for a surgical procedure. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Healthcare professionals have found that rehearsing balance exercises is critically important to practice not only as we age but also before surgery. During a surgical procedure, whether it is on the back or a lower extremity structure, the operation can disrupt the sensory feedback from the area to the brain, which is an essential part of a person's ability to be steady.  Equilibrium exercises, balance training and balance techniques should all be very familiar before going into surgery. For example, if you are a young female with an ACL tear from soccer or volleyball, it is essential to perform stability exercises and establish excellent balance skills before you get out of surgery and try to walk on crutches with a numb leg. If you are an older adult with a total knee or total hip replacement, it is imperative to practice balance exercises and develop good balance reactions before you get out of surgery and try to walk on a new knee or new hip.

Balance Exercises For Surgery

Balance exercises should be very familiar to you before surgery. for maximum safety and recovery,  It is an excellent idea to practice equilibrium exercises several weeks or at least several days before surgery.  One of the issues following surgery is the effect of anesthesia. With anesthesia, one often feels foggy and somewhat confused, which contributes to poor balance and a greater risk for falling. Consequently, by practicing balance exercises and familiarizing yourself with using crutches or a walker before surgery you will have a decreased risk for falling and better outcomes for progressing walking and other activities. you can rehearse the necessary stability exercises needed before surgery in the comfort of your own home with the exercise for balance dvd, developed by an experienced physical therapist.

Long Term Effects Of Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises For The Long HaulBalance Exercises And Coordination Training For An Unstable Ankle

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
The best way to get optimal long term benefits from balance exercises is to perform your balance routine on a consistent basis. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers have determined that consistency is critical for developing strong balance reactions and the balance skills needed to prevent falls and maintain an active and healthy life long into a person's eighties and nineties. Statistics reveal that falls are the number one culprit that leads older individuals to visit the Emergency Room with life changing injuries such as hip, wrist, shoulder fractures and head injuries. A daily dose of equilibrium routines can make the difference in improving steadiness and avoiding the potential of a fall.

Balance Exercises To Enhance Steadiness

Practicing balance exercises is the best way to advance stability skills and to maintain an upright position in all standing and moving activities. One way to develop strong balance reactions is to stand in a position with a narrow base of support.

Senior Balance Exercises Assist With Decline In Vision

Senior Balance Exercises Help With Visual Impairments

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/
Rehearsing senior balance exercises on a consistent basis is important for older adults who suffer with visual decline. Unfortunately, impairments in vision are a common occurrence for elderly individuals. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now For most people, age brings a decline in vision. Some of the most frequently diagnosed age-related diseases trigger the loss of vision or blindness, including cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in The State of Vision, Aging and Public Health in America that cases of early age-related macular degeneration are expected to double by 2015 to 17.8 million for those ages 50 years and older. Cases of diabetic retinopathy among people aged 65 or older will quadruple to 9.9 million. While navigating the environment as one ages can be challenging, navigating it while losing one's sight can be exponentially difficult, resulting in poor balance and a greater risk for falling. According to the National Center on Caregiving, nearly 3.5 million Americans over 40 years of age experience some vision loss, most commonly from age-related conditions. This number is expected to double in the next few decades with the aging of baby boomers. Unfortunately, statistics have also revealed that the number of injuries that are due to falling also continues to increase greatly. Loss of vision and visual impairments have a huge impact on balance abilities and the incidence of falling. Since vision is the primary sensory input for steadiness, having a visual impairment goes hand in hand with decreased stability and a higher incidence of falling. The good news, however, is that practicing senior balance exercises can enhance stability and reduce the potential for falling.

Senior Balance Exercises For Loss Of Vision

Practicing senior balance exercises can help to enhance stability for those individuals who struggle with visual deficits. Equilibrium routines which include focusing on the sense of touch between the feet and the floor helps to compliment deficits of vision in older adults. One stability exercise that can be rehearsed every day involves standing with the feet shoulder width apart and centering the body weight in the middle of the base of support established by the outer borders of the feet. the first step is to concentrate on controlling the movement of the center balance point within the base of support to develop a strong connection between the sensory input from the feet and the balance center in the brain. equilibrium routines can be advanced by following along with an experienced physical therapist in the exercise for balance dvd in the comfort of your own home.

Olympic Curlers Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises For Olympic Curling

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Balance exercises and protein drinks are the new norm for Olympic Curlers. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Back in 1987, typical Olympic curling athletes showed up to their event with a beer belly and a strong inability to pull off even one sit up. Back in the day, beer and cigarettes were as much of the culture of curling as ice and brooms. Now, however, as we will see in the Winter Olympic games in Sochi the athletes who participate in curling have undergone a fitness revolution. Curlers at the international level of competition now join in daily workout routines at the gym including weightlifting, endurance exercises, balance exercises. Curling, which surged in popularity during the 2010 Olympic Games, is one of the most social sports imaginable. Previously, the winning team after a curling match would buy a round of drinks for their opponents. Presently, after a match curlers are more likely to sip on water or a protein drink. Additionally, curlers now look more like elite athletes and less like weekend warriors. In a typical curling game, the participants walk approximately two miles. Furthermore, the athletes require extensive strength and endurance to furiously scrub the ice in front of the moving stone to enable the stone to glide as far as possible. Lets not forget that curlers also need exquisite balance to complete all their activities on ice. Consequently, fitness regimes for curlers include strength training, endurance routines and balance exercises.

Balance Exercises For Curling Competitions

Balance exercises and balance training is an important component of fitness regimes for athletes who participate in curling. To compete at high levels of events like Olympic curling, these athletes must have a strong foundation of balance skills. there are some basic stability strategies that can help these professionals feel steady on their feet while they scrub the ice for the stone to reach its maximal distance. one such balance technique begins with learning to concentrate on the sense of touch between the feet and the surface you are standing on, whether the surface is ice, cement, dirt, carpet or hardwood floors. By focusing on the sensory feedback from the feet, the individual is able to develop strong connections between their feet and balance system in the brain that helps to keep them upright during all movement activities. Additionally, curlers can practice balance exercises that start with standing on one foot on a solid surface like tile. these equilibrium routines can be advanced to standing on unstable surfaces like balance boards. you can learn proper stability strategies and balance exercises by following along with a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.
