Balance Exercises Boost Confidence

Balance exercises and fear of falling have been a recent topic of research to help encourage us. Büla C.J., Monod S., Hoskovec C. and Rochat S. in their excellent study, Interventions aiming at balance confidence improvement in older adults, looked at balance exercises and balance confidence. Loss of balance confidence is a frequent condition that affects 20-75% of community-dwelling older persons. Although a recent fall is a common trigger, loss of balance confidence also appears independent of previous experience with falls. Maintaining or improving balance confidence is important to avoid unnecessary, self-imposed restrictions of activity and subsequent disability. Holding another person's hand or using an assistive device while walking are simple interventions that are used naturally to address poor balance confidence in daily life. However, more complex interventions have also been developed and tested to achieve more sustained improvement in balance confidence. Results: Five of the 8 interventions that directly targeted balance confidence showed benefits. Interventions that targeted elderly persons reporting poor balance confidence and/or those at risk for falls seemed more likely to be beneficial. Conclusions: Positive and sometimes sustained improvement in balance confidence can be achieved by various interventions among community-dwelling elderly persons.

Balance Exercises Help With Standing After A Stroke

Balance Exercises For After A Stroke

Balance exercises can assist folks who have suffered from a stroke to stand and hopefully walk again. For all of us, balance exercises are critical to practice everyday as we pass the benchmark of 60 years old. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Balance exercises are even more important for people after they have experienced a stroke to help them regain a sense of centering in their bodies. Also, balance exercises assist individuals following a stroke to improve balance for standing and ideally walking again.

Balance Exercises Post Stroke

Balance exercises and their effectiveness subsequent to a stroke has been the focus of research. De Haart M., Geurts A.C., Huidekoper S.C., Fasotti L. and Van Limbeek J. in their investigation, Recovery of standing balance in postacute stroke patients, evaluated a person's balance abilities following a stroke. The purpose of teh study was to identify and interrelate static and dynamic characteristics of the restoration of quiet standing balance in a representative sample of stroke survivors in the Netherlands during their inpatient rehabilitation. Conclusions: Balance recovery in postacute stroke inpatients is characterized by a reduction in postural sway and instability as well as by a reduction in visual dependency, particularly with regard to frontal plane balance. These restoration characteristics may be important factors underlying the relearning of independent standing and walking abilities through the implementation of balance exercises.

Balance Exercises Across The Lifespan

Balance exercises are known to be vitally important to practice through the years of our lives. Balance exercises help us develop motor skills and appropriate balance reactions during our formative years. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Balance exercises and balance training also aids in participating in sports and recreation activities during our youth and adult years. More importantly, balance exercises are essential as we enter our older adult years. During that phase of life, balance exercises contribute to improving balance and reducing the risk and frequency of falling.
Balance Exercises Beneficial Over The Years

Balance exercises have been a recent topic of researchers and medical professionals to try to assist the swelling population of senior citizens, to keep them active, enjoying a good quality of life and preventing debilitating falls. Famuła A., Nowotny-Czupryna O., Nowotny J. and Płaszewski M. in their current study, Movement activity and body stability as a part of life style in different life periods, investigated the benefits of balance exercises and balance training throughout the years of a person's life. Physical activity is an important factor both composing human ability and influencing health status. Unspecific physical activity, especially in earlier life periods, generates a kind of potential, which can influence functioning of the elderly. Physical fitness, giving not only independence in some extend, but also abilities of coping with unpredicted situations, requiring involvement of coordination, skills, especially balance skills, are recognized as essential in such an age group. It is presently one of leading research directions, conducted with priority of fall prevention among the elderly. Nonetheless, the question of posture and balance control applies to individuals of every age. An objective control of balance skills (body stability) seems important, as recognizing any deficits in this respect can be a valuable indication towards establishing specific preventive actions, soothing such deficits or minimizing consequences of a potential fall. The aim of the study was to define the influence of level of previous physical activity on body stability in aged individuals. Results. The findings indicate interpersonal heterogeneity of body stability regulation ability, stability and reaction time. A tendency towards worse results was seen in subjects over 50 years of age, as compared to younger participants, especially in stability, manifested by increased [so called] safety margin, especially during backward swings. A tendency towards better results was observed in subjects formerly more physically active, regardless the age.

Balance Exercises Together With The BBTW

Balance exercises are increasingly more important to perform every day as we age. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Balance exercises, however, are also necessary for individuals who struggle with medical conditions that affect their balance abilities. Recently, I was introduced to the Balance-Based Torso Weighting garment that assists people who have poor balance secondary to medical issues. The BBTW garment is a fabulous adjunct to balance exercises for people diagnosed with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, post stroke, head injury and sciatica.

Balance Exercises In Conjunction With BBTW

Balance exercises are a perfect follow up after individuals are fitted with a BB TW garment. Balance-Based Torso-Weighting® is an evaluation and treatment system consisting of an assessment procedure that in turn results in a custom weighted patient garment. A therapist assesses an individual’s balance to find problem areas in accordance with the BBTW™ Assessment Manual. Once the balance dysfunction is identified, small non-obtrusive weights are strategically placed on the torso (trunk) to improve balance control. Patients frequently report significant improvement in their balance abilities during their first visit. Balance exercises can be implemented with a BB TW garment in place to enable individuals to enhance their balance skills in both standing and walking activities, thereby decreasing the risk for falling and increasing their general mobility. To learn more about the BBTW garment, including amazing video footage of astounding changes to patient's balance and gait, see, www.motiontherapeutics.com .

Balance Exercises Used To Prevent Falls In Older Adults

Balance Exercises Are Used To Prevent Falls For Seniors

Balance exercises are seen as the best line of defense to prevent falls in aging adults. Balance exercises assist in improving balance skills and balance reactions. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now As we age, the reaction time and ability for our feet and ankles to respond to changing surfaces diminishes, resulting in a greater frequency of falling in older adults. One aspect of the problem with balance reactions in seniors is that our ankles become stiffer and weaker as we age. Balance exercises can advance both strength and balance abilities through the feet and ankles, as seen in recent research.

Balance Exercises To Reduce The Frequency Of Falling

Balance exercises have been demonstrated through research studies to aid in falling. In their investigation, Maki B.E., Cheng K.C.-C., Mansfield A., looked at Preventing falls in older adults: New interventions to promote more effective change-in-support balance reactions . "Change-in-support" (CIS) balance-recovery reactions that involve rapid stepping or reaching movements play a critical role in preventing falls; however, age-related deficits in the neuro-musculoskeletal systems may impede ability to execute these reactions effectively. This review describes four new interventions aimed at reducing fall risk in older adults by promoting more effective CIS reactions: (1) balance training, (2) balance-enhancing footwear, (3) safer mobility aids, and (4) handrail cueing systems. The results show that balance exercises were effective as well as the balance-enhancing footwear insole improves control of stepping reactions by compensating for age-related loss of plantar cutaneous sensation. In a clinical trial, subjects wore the insole for 12 weeks with no serious problems and no habituation of the balance-enhancing benefits. The mobility-aid intervention involves changes to the design of pickup walkers so as to reduce impediments to lateral stepping. Finally, work is underway to investigate the effectiveness of handrail cueing in attracting attention to the rail and ensuring that the brain registers its location, thereby facilitating more rapid and accurate grasping.

Balance Exercises Help With Walking After A Fall

Balance exercises are essential to perform on a daily basis for anyone over the age of 60. Balance exercises help to keep us stable, on our feet and active in our daily lives. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Balance exercises are even more important to practice for folks who have suffered from a stroke. After a stroke, an individual often experiences weakness on one side, possibly one arm and one leg. That weakness shifts the person's center of balance and diminishes their balance abilities, resulting in a greater risk of falling and impairment. Balance exercises have been determined to be of assistance to folks after a stroke.

Balance Exercises Helpfulness Post Stroke

Balance exercises and their effects for stroke suffers has been a topic of recent research. In a comprehensive investigation, Rose´n E., Sunnerhagen K.S. and Kreuter M. in their study, Fear of falling, balance, and gait velocity in patients with stroke, evaluated the positive outcomes of balance exercises and balance training for individuals following a stroke. After a stroke balance can be impaired, that may influence the physical activities which can be undertaken. A persons confidence in performing activities without falling could be as important as the real balance ability in situations of daily living. The aims of the study were to evaluate the relationship between perceived self-confidence in task performance without falling. The results indicate that the use of the balance exercises can be recommended in subjects with stroke and balance deficit in order to map out the dimension of self-confidence in balance problems.

Balance Exercises: Who Can Benefit?

Balance exercises and balance training are increasingly important as we get older to stave off the risk of falling and incurring serious injuries.
See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Balance exercises are important to practice on a daily and ongoing basis. Are balance exercises more important for some folks in the population rather than other individuals?

Balance Exercises And Demographics

Balance exercises have been the focus of numerous research studies recently. Researcher s have begun to look at which aspects of the population require balance exercises and balance training more than other folks in the population. Stevens K.N., Lang I.A., Guralnik J.M. and Melzer D. in their study, Epidemiology of balance and dizziness in a national population, investigated the individuals in society that are more prone to falls and more in need of balance exercises. Objective: To identify socio-economic, behavioural and disease status risks for impaired balance or self-reported dizziness in older people from a large population-based study. Results: there were 21.5 (n= 619) participants with impaired balance and 11.1% (n =375) reported dizziness. Impaired balance was statistically significantly associated with age, diabetes (OR = 1.53), arthritis (OR = 1.33), eyesight (OR = 1.94) and grip strength. The wealthiest 20% of participants were less likely to have impaired balance than the poorest 20% (OR = 0.46). Dizziness problems were not associated with age, gender or wealth, but were significantly associated with an abnormal heart rhythm (OR = 1.85), hearing (OR = 1.81), eyesight (OR = 1.72) and grip strength. As you can see, balance problems occur with people of varying states, including older adults.

Balance Exercises: Born To Be Balanced

Balance Exercises: Born To Be Balanced

Balance exercises are the solid foundation of our lives from our early formative years to our twilight years. Balance exercises and balance training are an innate process of our development from the very first attempts to sit and crawl and walk. Balance exercises help to develop our balance skills as we progress from walking to running to hopping to play and sports activities throughout our childhood. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises And Our Innate Desire To Be Balanced

Balance exercises largely go unnoticed for most of us during the middle portion of our lives unless we are involved in athletic endeavors or if we battle medical conditions that inflict dizziness or balance problems. When struggling with dizziness and a sense of being off balance, whether that comes from chronic sinus problems or injuries secondary to a car accident, we naturally try to regain our equilibrium and eliminate the feeling of dizziness. Balance exercises can help improve the body’s ability to establish one's central equilibrium. Balance exercises can also assist in eliminating this sensation of dizziness or light-headedness.

Balance Exercises Enhanced With Strength Exercises

Balance exercises are the number one way to improve balance and prevent falls. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now
Balance exercises can be enhanced to a greater degree by accompanying the balance training with strengthening exercises. As we age, our leg muscles become weaker making it more difficult to get up out of a chair, go up and down stairs and maintain stability with standing and walking activities. Also, as we get older the strength in our ankles reduces which directly affects our balance reactions and balance abilities. No wonder our balance skills can advance exponentially when we combine balance routines with strength exercises.

Balance Exercises More Effective In Combination With Strength Exercises

Balance exercises have been a recent focus of various research studies. Lately, balance exercises and strength exercises have been studied together. Judge J.O., Lindsey C., Underwood M., Winsemius D. and Keshner E.A. in an excellent study, Balance improvements in older women: Effects of exercise training, evaluated balance exercises and strength exercises. Loss of lower-extremity strength increases the risk of falls in older persons. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that a rigorous program of lower-extremity strengthening, walking, and postural control exercises would improve the single-stance balance of healthy older women and lower their risk of falls and fall-associated injuries. The subjects ranged in age from 62 to 75 years. Methods. A randomized control trial compared the effects of two exercise programs on static balance. The combined training group exercised three times per week on knee extension and sitting leg press machines, walked briskly for 20 minutes, and performed postural control exercises, which included simple tai chi movements. The flexibility training group performed postural control exercises weekly. Results: The mean displacement of the center of pressure in single stance improved 17% in the combined training group and did not change in the flexibility training group.

Balance Exercises Set Up A Good Golf Swing

Balance exercises are necessary to be able to shift weight properly during the different types of golf swings. When teeing off, the individual needs to be able to shift his weight slowly and steadily from the center of his body, to the rear foot, and then to the front foot. Balance Exercises Using A Wide Base Of Support

Balance Exercises And A Wide Base Of Support

Balance exercises are an important part of our daily lives as we get older. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-nowAccording to research, balance exercises need to be practiced every day to build the proper connections between the brain and the body, which help improve balance reactions and balance skills. Balance exercises can start with easy imbalance routines and progress in several different ways to perform more challenging balance activities.

Balance Exercises And Levels Of Difficulty

One-way to make balance exercises easier or more difficult is to change the base of support that the individual is standing on. The consistency of the surface can change from a solid surface to a soft surface like foam, pillow or couch cushion. A harder surface is easier to balance on secondary to an increase in sensory information received through the feet and ankles. An even greater challenging surface to balance on can be balance exercise equipment such as a rocker board or BOSU. Balance exercises can also progress the level of difficulty by using a wide base of support or narrow base of support. A balance exercise where the feet are shoulder width apart in a wide base of support increases the individual’s stability and makes the balance training easier. In this picture of a giraffe, we see the use of a wide base of support that enhances stability and balance abilities.

Balance Training For High Level Sports

Balance Training For High Level Sports

Balance training is an essential part of all athletics. Every sport demands different balance exercises and balance training to maximize the performance of the athlete. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Usually, balance training is the basic foundation for every athlete's workout routine. Balance training in combination with free weight strengthening exercises can advance performance at every level. Two specific sports come to mind when thinking about high level activities that require extensive balance training and balance exercises: Figure skating and surfing. The balance exercises and balance training necessary for figure skating are extensive. Figure skating combines moving on a razor thin blade, which is an extremely narrow base of support for balance, while performing various spins and jumps. For most of us mortals, staying upright on a thin base of support on the bottom of an ice skate is challenging enough. Additionally, ice skaters pile on even more difficult maneuvers, including spins and various jumps such as triples, quads, double loops, and combination jumps. Furthermore, ice skaters display various spin moves with one or two feet and multiple positions. Ice skaters, therefore, most work on high level balance activities, employing a small base of support and complex movement patterns. Ice skaters can include various balance board routines and other high level balance training equipment, such as the BOSU, Red Disc, and FOAM for balance exercises.

Balance training is also required for the sport of surfing. Surfing is another activity that includes high level balance activities and balance skills. With surfing, the individual is on a moving board on a moving wave. Every surfboard rocks side to side. The surfer must learn to balance their center balance point in the middle of the board while the board is moving. Additionally, the surfer must be able to maintain their balance while hurtling across a moving wave that is constantly changing form. Surfers can advance their balance techniques by working out on balance boards, BOSU and varying compliant FOAM surfaces.

Balance Exercises And Walking

Balance exercises have been proven to assist with walking, but does the speed of walking effect balance and fall frequency? Montero-Odasso M., Schapira M., Varela C., Pitteri C., Soriano E.R., Kaplan R., Camera L.A. and Mayorga L.M. recently reported in their study, Gait velocity in senior people. An easy test for detecting mobility impairment in community elderly, that there is a correlation between balance abilities and walking speed. Functional assessment is an important part of the evaluation of elderly patients. Mobility problems detected by functional tests predict the development of more severe disability and injurious events such as falls and hip fractures. Results: Only 15% of the subjects with normal gait velocity reported recurrent falls in the previous 6 months while 35% of subjects with pathological gait velocity did. This study showed that a problem with walking speed also correlated with an increase in falls for older adults.

Balance Exercises Help With Instability

Balance Exercises And Ankle Instability

Balance exercises can help those unfortunate individuals who suffer with ankle instability from chronic ligamnet sprains or disease processes like rheumatoid arthritis. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Balance exercises are the cornerstone for helping older people stay on their feet when they deal with instability issues. Those folks with ankle problems struggle greatly with imbalance because the ankles play such a vital role in balance reactions and keeping us upright.

Balance Exercises For The Chronic Ankle Sprains

Balance exercises for people with ankle sprains has become a recent focus of researchers. In their study, Balance training for persons with functionally unstable ankles, Rozzi S.L., Lephart S.M., Sterner R. and Kuligowski L. evaluated the relationship of balance exercises and ankle instability. Objectives: To determine the effects of a 4-week balance exercise and balance training program during stance on a single leg for individuals who have experienced multiple episodes of inversion ankle sprains. Balance training is performed to treat existing proprioceptive deficits and to restore ankle joint stability, presumably by retraining altered afferent neuromuscular pathways. Conclusions: This study suggests that balance training is an effective means of improving joint proprioception and single-leg standing ability in subjects with unstable and nonimpaired ankles.

Balance Exercises Enhance With Mental Training

Balance Exercises Maximized With Mental Training

Balance exercises are a vital part of the daily lives of folks over the age of 60 years. Is there any way to advance balance exercises so as to not get burned out? See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now How can we make balance exercises more difficult without causing falls or a loss of confidence? thankfully, now there is a research study that answers that question.

Balance Exercises Furthered With Mental Training

Balance exercises combined with mental training has been a recent interest among researchers to evaluate if mental exercises can further develop balance abilities. In their study, Effect of mental training on the balance control ability of healthy subjects, Choi J.H., Choi Y.W., Nam K.S., Cho I.S., Hwang Y.T. and Kwon Y.H. looked at the issue of balance exercises and mental routines. This study investigated the effect of physical training with visual feedback and mental training with motor imagery on balance control ability. Our findings indicate that physical balance training with visual feedback as well as mental balance training with motor imagery is effective. Therefore, mental training could contribute to improving dynamic balance ability in a cost-effective home-based training program.

Balance Exercises: Can You Lose Balance Abilities If you Don't Practice?

Balance Exercises: Can You Lose Balance Abilities If you Don't Practice?

Balance exercises are critical to perform for older adults as they age, that we know. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Research has shown us that balance exercises and balance training aids in improving balance, reducing falls and building balance confidence. Balance exercises are recommended as part of daily or three times a week training routine. Balance exercises are very easy to incorporate into regular activities like brushing ones teeth or waiting for coffee to brew. What happens to a senior if they practice balance exercises for a few months and then quit? Do they lose their balance abilities?

Balance Exercises And Detraining

Researchers have recently investigated what happens to elderly folks if they perform balance exercises for a few months and then they stop their balance training. Toulotte C., Thevenon A. and Fabre C. in their excellent study, Effects of training and detraining on the static and dynamic balance in elderly fallers and non-fallers, looked at the effects of timing and persistence with balance exercises. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of training based on static and dynamic balance in single and dual task conditions in order to analyse the effects of detraining on static and dynamic balance in healthy elderly fallers and non-fallers. The subjects were evaluated 3 months before the training period, 2 days before the training period, 2 days after the end of the training period and 3 months after the training period. Results: This study demonstrated a loss of physical capacities over 3 months for stride time, single support time for fallers in both conditions. Physical training significantly improves static and dynamic balance under single and dual task conditions. Lastly, after 3 months of detraining, a loss of the physical training effects were measured for fallers and non-fallers on the different walking parameters in the two conditions and on the unipedal tests. Conclusions. The absence of stimulation before the trained period shows a negative effect of ageing on walking and falls whereas training permits an improvement in static balance and the pattern of walking under single and dual task conditions, which could be due to an increase in muscular strength and a better division of attention. On the other hand, 3 months of detraining inhibited the effects of training, which showed the speed of the decline caused by 'natural' ageing. In Summary, this study shows that practicing daily balance exercises improve balance and prevent falls. The study also tells us, however, that if you stop balance exercises for a period of time your balance abilities are diminished. That critical information is excellent motivation to start balance exercises and keep them going!
