Balance Exercises Across All Ages

Balance Exercises Across All Ages

Balance exercises are important for people of all ages. A routine of practicing balance exercises throughout life is essential. Balance exercises help us when we are young to develop and strengthen our vestibular system. Balance exercises when we are old help us to improve balance and prevent falls. Balance exercises: A Predictor Against Falling

Balance exercises have become a hot topic in recent research to meet the needs of our aging population. Famuła A., Nowotny-Czupryna O., Nowotny J. and Płaszewski M. in their study, Movement activity and body stability as a part of life style in different life periods, looked at the effects of doing balance exercises throughout our lives and how that helps to prevent falls when we are older. Introduction. Physical activity is an important factor both composing human ability and influencing health status. Unspecific physical activity, especially in earlier life periods, generates a kind of potential, which can influence functioning of the elderly. Physical fitness, giving not only independence in some extend, but also abilities of coping with unpredicted situations, requiring involvement of coordination, skills, especially balance skills, are recognized as essential in such an age group. It is presently one of leading research directions, conducted with priority of fall prevention among the elderly. Nonetheless, the question of balance exercises, posture and balance control applies to individuals of every age. An objective control of balance skills (body stability) seems important, as recognizing any deficits in this respect can be a valuable indication towards establishing specific preventive actions, soothing such deficits or minimizing consequences of a potential fall. The aim of the study was to define the influence of level of previous physical activity on body stability in aged individuals. Results: A tendency towards worse results was seen in subjects over 50 years of age, as compared to younger participants, especially in stability, manifested by increased [so called] safety margin, especially during backward swings. A tendency towards better results was observed in subjects formerly more physically active, regardless the age. The correlation was not thoroughly consistent, however Conclusions. Interpersonal heterogeneity of body stability and tendency for its declining with aging indicate that risk of falls among aged people does appear, but varies interpersonally. Better results, normally achieved by more active persons, suggest it purposeful to treat physical activity as a long distance prophylaxis. Physical activities engaging coordination, balance exercises and balance control to a greater extend seem more beneficial in this respect.

Balance Exercises Begin Each Day

Balance Exercises To Start Your Day

Balance exercises should be the start of every day. Performing balance exercises at the onset of your day can help you become grounded and more stable to enjoy the activities of the day. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now By concentrating on balance techniques and balance exercises, the brain and body connection for balance can be established and strengthened at the beginning of each day. Balance exercises should be the foundation of every morning routine to start the day.

Balance Exercises On A Daily Basis

Balance exercises need to be performed each and every day. If someone tries to practice a balance exercise like standing on one foot every once in a while, the body is not able to develop the necessary brain-body connections needed for balance. Also, random trials of balance exercises do not established the needed balance reactions at the ankles that provide stability in challenging balance situations. Consequently, balance exercises should be practiced every day to develop the necessary brain- body connections and balance skills.

Learn Balance Exercises To Be Grounded

Balance Exercises Help Us Feel Grounded

Balance exercises can teach us how to find our center balance point when standing or sitting. One key component of balance exercises and balance training is to focus on the balance point between our feet in our arches. While focusing on that point, our brain is able to connect the sense of touch between our feet and the floor to help us feel grounded or more stable. Focusing on the balance point helps to improve balance and reduce the risk and frequency of falling and being injured.

Balance Exercises For Osteoporosis

Balance Exercises Help Osteoporosis

Balance exercises are an important part of our lives as we age. One aspect of aging that balance exercises can help with is osteoporosis. Unfortunately, osteoporosis effects many women as they age. One of the complications of osteoporosis is creating poor posture --that forward bent posture where the head and shoulders slump forward. Osteoporosis can make us feel like we have an extremely heavy head that we are trying to hold up like this buck...

With severe forward posture, our center of gravity is also thrown forwards, which produces balance problems. With our center balance point forward in our toes, it is easy to fall forwards and be injured.

Balance Exercises Improve Balance and Strength

A research study was recently completed that showed that balance exercises can help both improve balance and increase strength in ladies with osteoporosis. A randomized control trial of 223 postmenopausal breast cancer survivors was conducted to determine if 24 months of exercise training, including balance exercises, would demonstrate improved muscle strength and balance. Participants were randomly selected to a control or an intervention group. Testing was conducted at baseline, 6, 12, and 24 months for all participants.
FINDINGS: Women who exercised for 24 months had improved hip, knee, and wrist flexion and extension and improved balance. Also, the women who exercised had fewer falls.

Learn Balance Exercises Before Surgery

Balance exercises are important to practice not only as we age but also before surgery. Balance exercises, balance training and balance techniques should all be old hat before going into surgery. If you are a young girl with an ACL tear from soccer or volleyball, it is essential to perform balance exercises and establish excellent balance skills before you get out of surgery and try to walk on crutches with a numb leg. If you are an older adult with a total knee or total hip replacement, it is imperative to practice balance exercises and develop good balance reactions before you get out of surgery and try to walk on a new knee or new hip. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Practice Balance Exercises Before Surgery

Balance exercises should be very familiar to you before surgery. It is excellent idea to practice balance exercises several weeks or at least several days before surgery. One of the issues following surgery is the effect of anesthesia. With anesthesia, one often feels foggy and somewhat confused, which contributes to poor balance and a greater risk for falling. Consequently, by practicing balance exercises and familiarizing yourself with using crutches or a walker before surgery you will have a decreased risk for falling and better outcomes for progressing walking and other activities.

Balance Exercises Can Be Fun

Balance Exercises Are Lots Of Fun

Balance exercises can be fun at any age. When we were kids, we had fun swinging in swings and jumping out to see how far we could get. Those activities were early forms of balance exercises and balance training. Additionally, when we were kids, bouncing on the hippity-hop was also an excellent source of entertainment while building balance skills. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises Can Be Fun As Adults

Balance exercises do not have to stop being fun as we age. We can employ the same energy and enjoyment to balance exercises that we experienced as youths. Balance exercises and balance training as adults can include activities such as square dancing and ball room dancing. Senior balance exercises can also involve group classes at the gym, like Silversneakers©, which emphasize strengthening, stretching and balance exercises. Balance exercises and balance training in group settings for seniors have the added benefit of building relationships, thereby overcoming the isolation that so often plagues seniors.

Balance Exercises And Sports Performance

Balance Exercises Improve Sports Performance

Balance exercises could be the key to improving your sports performance. Every athlete is always looking for the golden edge-- that which will boost them over the competition. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Balance exercises could be the ingredient that raises your sports performance to the next level. Whether you participate in tennis, basketball, soccer or football or whether you enjoy dancing, hiking or playing with the grandkids, balance exercises can be of benefit to you.

Balance Exercises Advance Sports Performance

Balance exercises have been a topic of research in regards to sports performance. Hrysomallis C. in his study, Balance ability and athletic performance, looked at the relationship between balance exercises and sports abilities. The relationship between balance ability and sport injury risk has been established in many cases, but the relationship between balance ability and athletic performance is less clear. This review compares the balance ability of athletes from different sports, determines if there is a difference in balance ability of athletes at different levels of competition within the same sport, determines the relationship of balance ability with performance measures and examines the influence of balance training on sport performance or motor skills. Based on the available data from cross-sectional studies, gymnasts tended to have the best balance ability, followed by soccer players, swimmers, active control subjects and then basketball players. Surprisingly, no studies were found that compared the balance ability of rifle shooters with other athletes. There were some sports, such as rifle shooting, soccer and golf, where elite athletes were found to have superior balance ability compared with their less proficient counterparts, but this was not found to be the case for alpine skiing, surfing and judo. Balance ability was shown to be significantly related to rifle shooting accuracy, archery shooting accuracy, ice hockey maximum skating speed and simulated luge start speed, but not for baseball pitching accuracy or snowboarding ranking points. Prospective studies have shown that the addition of a balance training component to the activities of recreationally active subjects or physical education students has resulted in improvements in vertical jump, agility, shuttle run and downhill slalom skiing. Balance ability was related to competition level for some sports, with the more proficient athletes displaying greater balance ability. There were significant relationships between balance ability and a number of performance measures. Evidence from prospective studies supports the notion that balance training can be a worthwhile adjunct to the usual training of non-elite athletes to enhance certain motor skills.

Balance Problems Post Hip Fracture

Balance Problems following a hip fracture

Balance problems occur all too often in individuals after a hip fracture. With a hip fracture, the person can have deficits in both leg strength and balance. Balance problems can be visible during walking or moving from sitting to standing. Balance problems have been the focus of recent research , since about 20 million older adults fall every year, often times fracturing a hip. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Postural balance and self-reported balance confidence in older adults with a hip fracture history

Recent research was done by Sihvonen S. on balance problems following a hip fracture. Balance dysfunction and loss of balance confidence have been associated with functional limitations and loss of independency in daily tasks. This study examined various aspects of postural balance and balance confidence between older adults with a hip fracture history and their non-fractured counterparts. A comprehensive assessment of balance capacity in older adults with a hip fracture history may help to identify aspects of postural balance that play an important role in the mobility recovery and the avoidance of further falls. Methods: The present study comprised 79 community-dwelling older adults with a hip fracture history and 31 non-fractured subjects of the same age, who participated in balance tests including both force platform measures and functional balance testing (Berg Balance Scale, BBS). In addition, balance confidence was assessed with the Activities-Specific Balance Confidence (ABC) scale. Results: Persons with a hip fracture history had a markedly poorer balance control and were significantly less confident maintaining their balance during daily activities compared to the controls.
Conclusions: Balance impairments along with the loss of balance confidence are persistent problems among community-dwelling older adults with a history of hip fracture and may contribute to mobility limitations and the risk of falling.

Balance Exercises For Active Elderly People

Balance Exercises Help Active Older Folks

Balance exercises and balance training have been suggested for individuals to continue on a daily basis as they age. For more information, see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now . Now a long-term research study has been published that confirms the decline in balance and the need for seniors to perform balance exercises.

Balance Exercises Help Even Active Seniors

Balance exercises, balance abilities and frequent falling has been studied over a several year period for active seniors. Gustafson A.-S., Noaksson L., Grahn Kronhed A.-C., Mo¨ller M. and Mo¨ller C. in their study, Changes In Balance Performance In Physically Active Elderly People Aged 73-80, looked at balance exercises and balance abilities over a seven year period.
In our hospital in 1989 a series of 30 healthy elderly people participated in a study to evaluate the effect of physical training on improving balance. Thereafter, the majority of the people in this group continued with some kind of balance training and balance exercises. Seven years later we followed up 17 of the people who had participated in the original study. We wanted to evaluate the balance performance of these physically active elderly people and compare it with their balance performance 7 years previously. RESULTS: Balance was found to be significantly impairedcompared with 1989 in four out of six static balance tests. This study confirms that as we age even active seniors decline in their balance skills, resulting in a higher frequency of falling and greater risk of injury. This study also suggests that continuing balance exercises and balance training is imperative to try to keep balance abilities at their highest level for as long as possible as we age.

Balance Exercises And Foot And Ankle Characteristics

Balance Exercises For Seniors And Foot And Ankle Positions

Balance exercises are critical senior exercises to improve balance problems and prevent frequent falling. For more information see, http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Researchers are finding that certain characteristics of foot and ankle properties relate to increases in falling for older individuals.

Balance Exercises And Ankle-Foot Properties

Balance exercises have been correlated with foot and ankle positions to determine the likelihood of falling and balance problems. Menz H.B., Morris M.E. and Lord S.R. in their study, Foot and ankle characteristics associated with impaired balance and functional ability in older people, researched the links between balance problems, foot-ankle positions and the need for balance exercises. Ageing is associated with changes to the structure and function of the foot and ankle, and there is preliminary evidence that foot problems impair balance and increase the risk of falls. To explore this in more detail, we conducted a study to determine the relative contribution of several foot and ankle characteristics to performance on a range of balance and functional tests. Methods. One hundred seventy-six people (56 men and 120 women, mean age 80.1 years residing in a retirement village underwent tests of foot and ankle characteristics (including foot posture, range of motion, strength, and deformity), sensorimotor function (including vision, sensation, strength, and reaction time), and balance and functional ability (including tests of standing balance, leaning balance, stepping, sit-to-stand, and walking speed). Conclusions. Foot and ankle characteristics, particularly ankle flexibility, plantar tactile sensation, and strength of toe plantarflexor muscles, are significant independent predictors of balance and functional ability in older people. Programs to improve the strength and flexibility of the foot and interventions to augment plantar sensation may be beneficial in improving mobility and reducing the risk of falls.

Balance Exercises Related To Hearing And Vision

Balance Exercises Related To Hearing And Vision

Balance exercises are important as we age. Performing balance exercises daily helps offset the aged related detrioration of important balance system components including vision and inner ear function, as correlated with hearing. The three main components of the balance system, our vision, our inner ear function, called the vestibular system, and the sensation from our feet and ankles all are compromised as we age into our 60's. See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Now, there is recent information on how balance exercises, hearing and vision all affect balance abilities and the risk of falling.

Balance Exercises As Related To Hearing And Vision

Balance exercises were studied in relation to hearing and vision impairments by Gerson L.W., Jarjoura D. and McCord G. in the study, Risk Of Imbalance In Elderly People With Impaired Hearing Or Vision. The effect of impaired hearing and vision on balance in a sample of 977 elderly people residing in the community was evaluated. Of the sample, 21% reported balance problems, 27% vision problems, and 30% hearing problems. The increased relative risk for balance problems was 1.7 for each 10-year age increment. Women were 1.7 times more likely to report balance problems than were men. The relative risk of imbalance with impaired vision decreased with age from 2.8 in those aged 65-69 years to 1.0 in those over 85 years. There was no age-hearing interaction, the relative risk for impaired hearing is 1.6. CONCLUSION: It appears that impaired vision and hearing are important risk factors for imbalance and perhaps falls and injury.
