Balance Exercises For Football

Balance Exercises For Football

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com Whether you are playing football or watching the football games this holiday season, balance exercises can help you enjoy the game to the fullest. For those fabulous athletes that perform on the football field, adding a balance exercise program to your workout  routine can vastly improve your performance. While working out with weight machines in the gym, try to modify your exercises by substituting sitting on the weight bench to standing over the bench, standing on one foot and performing the lifting exercise with your eyes closed. Those modifications will challenge your balance as well as encourage your core muscles to work harder. When you do free weight exercises, like Biceps and Triceps curls, try standing on a piece of balance equipment like a disc or BOSU and close your eyes. That will again challenge your balance and maximize your balance abilities. Please see     http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises For Football Season

For those football fans who will be watching the games from the couch or stands, balance exercises will help keep you safe during the games. One stability exercise you can practice is transitioning from sitting to standing. Often times, people with balance problems fall over or lose their equilibrium when they stand up. The key to maintaining steadiness is to use the sense of touch between your feet and the floor once you stand up. That sensory feedback will help to stabilize you and prevent you from falling. For more stability exercises and specific balance techniques, you can get the Exercise For Balance DVD to practice a balance routine at home with a licensed physical therapist, who is trained in the field of balance.

Better Your Life With Senior Balance Exercises

Improve Your Life With Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Senior balance exercises are one of the paths to a better quality of life for older adults. Unfortunately, the reality of falling can be a constant fear for the elderly.  Statistics remind us that 92% of all hospital emergency room visits are a result of a fall and an injury.  The numbers are not kind. One in three aged adults fall every year, which is about twenty million per year. For the older generation, a consequence of falling is often a wrist fracture or hip fracture, which leads to a downward spiral and ultimate loss of quality of life. After a fall, the individual quite often is limited in their abilities to dress, cook, clean house, drive, walk or complete many other activities of daily living independently.  This loss of quality of life can be circumvented by practicing a balance exercise routine on a daily basis.   See http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Enhance Your Life With Senior Balance Exercises

Senior balance exercises practiced every day will help strengthen your balance reactions at your feet and ankles, thereby reducing your risk for falling.  An additional advantage of practicing stability exercises is that they help to enhance leg strength that is needed for improved steadiness.  Equilibrium exercises help the individual to center their weight during standing and walking activities, which also enhances posture and contributes to reduce back pain. Another benefit of performing senior balance exercises is that they will build confidence and minimize any fear of falling that might linger in the back of your mind.  By practicing balance routines every day, you can stay active and engaged in the community, which leads to a better quality of life.

Balance Exercises For A Hamstring Injury

Balance Exercises Following A Hamstring Injury

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Balance exercises can be helpful for anyone who suffers a hamstring injury and a resulting change in walking pattern.  With a hamstring injury, typically the large muscle at the back of the leg is strained, resulting in pain and stiffness and an altered gait pattern.  Following a hamstring injury, the individual most often walks with a short step on the painful side.  A hamstring injury can diminish balance abilities and balance reactions, resulting in a greater risk for falling. Hamstring injuries are more likely to occur if you play sports such as soccer, basketball, football, tennis or other similar sports that involve quick movements or sprinting with sudden stops and starts. A Hamstring injury can occur in runners and in dancers as well. Additionally, hamstring strains occur in seniors secondary to generalized weakness and tightness and their leg muscles.  The first step in helping a hamstring muscle strain to heal is to administer ice, gentle stretching, gentle massage and rest.  The second step in recovering from a hamstring injury is to begin to walk with a normal gait pattern and initiate balance exercises to reduce the risk of falling.   Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises For After A Hamstring Injury

Balance exercises can help you get back on your feet following a hamstring injury.  By practicing stability exercises on a daily basis you can improve balance reactions at the feet and ankles which will help you stay upright as you are moving.  Equilibrium exercises can help train the brain and body connections that are needed to be steady with various movements.  By practicing balance techniques while walking, you can help to normalize your gait pattern in a safe and stable manner.  Now you can learn specific balance techniques and exercises in the comfort of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Effects Balance Exercises On Fall Prevention

Effects Of Balance Exercises On Preventing Falls

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com Balance exercises have been studied by medical researchers to find their effectiveness to assist seniors in fall prevention. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Lee HC, Chang KC,  in their research project, Effects of a Multifactorial Fall Prevention Program on Fall Incidence and Physical Function in Community-dwelling Elderly with Risk of Fall, investigated the relationship between balance exercises and fall prevention. Their objective was to evaluate effects of a multifactorial fall prevention program on fall incidence and physical function in community-dwelling older people. Their subjects included Community-dwelling elderly who had fallen in the previous year or with risk of fall. INTERVENTIONS: Their participants received a 3-month multifactorial intervention program including 8-week exercise training, health education, home hazards evaluation/ modification, along with medication review and ophthalmology/other specialty consult. The results of their study included that the multifaceted fall prevention program with balance exercise intervention improved functional performance at 3-months for community-dwelling elders with risk of fall.

Balance Exercises For Fall Reduction

Balance exercises , therefore, have been proven over and over by medical researchers to be effective in reducing the risk and frequency of falls in older adults. Stability exercises can include instruction and practice of balance techniques such as centering ones weight in one's body. Additionally, equilibrium exercises can involve standing on soft or uneven surfaces with a narrow base of support to heighten balance reactions at the feet and the ankles. These balance techniques and exercises can now be reproduced with a balance expert using the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Balance Exercises For The Christmas Production

Balance Exercises For the Christmas Play

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com Balance exercises are essential to practice all year round so you are ready when the big Christmas production comes your way. Last night I went with my family to a Living Nativity. I had never ventured to see a Living Nativity before. The production was held at night ( in the dark) and outdoors (along the grass field and through the church courtyard). We walked through a remake of Herod's Palace, the Shepherd's field, the manager in Bethlehem and the life of Christ in Jerusalem. The costumes were fabulous. The set design was marvelous. The acting was first-rate. The story was fabulous in every way. The experience was enriched by the beautiful starry night. I must admit, however, my mind went to the safety of those taking in the production and the challenge faced by anyone who has problems with balance. I hovered around my Mom, who is in her mid-eighties and has two artificial hips.  I was worried that she might trip on a cord or slip on some of the hay. Thankfully, my Mom has been dutifully practicing her stability exercises and did not have any problems. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

balance exercisesBalance Exercises For Christmas Outings

The balance exercises that my Mom has been practicing includes centering her weight in her feet and concentrating on the sense of touch between her feet and the ground. Consequently, when she was walking through the dark corridors of Jerusalem last night, she did not miss a step. She also works on the equilibrium exercises I demonstrate in the Exercise For Balance DVD. The DVD is set up to go at her own pace. When she is comfortable with one stability exercise , she can move on to the next one in the progression. Over the last few years, the balance DVD has helped her to recover from her hip surgeries and to get back on the tennis court with her friends. The DVD can also help you or a loved one improve balance and return to an active lifestyle.

Balance Exercises Depressive Symptoms, And Chronic pain

Balance Exercises Help With Depression & Chronic Pain

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com Balance exercises are beneficial for many people to practice on a daily basis whether you are a senior over the age of 60 or somone struggling with depressive symptoms and chronic pain. Researchers have looked at the connection between falling and depressive symptoms and chronic pain. Eggermont LH, Penninx BW, in their study,   Depressive symptoms, chronic pain, and falls in older community-dwelling adults, determined the incidence of falling among those with depression and chronic pain. They found that the rate of incident falls was highest in those with the highest burden of depressive symptoms. Furthermore, Depressive symptoms are associated with fall risk in older adults and are mediated in part by chronic pain. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises Help Those With Depression And Pain

The study above relates to us that pain and depression can increase the incidence of falling. Thankfully, balance exercises can assist in improving stability and reducing the number of falls for those with depression and pain. Equilibrium exercises can be practiced on a daily basis at an easy level of effort so as not to flare up pain symptoms. Additionally, stability exercises can helpbuild a good foundation for safety, enabling the individual to start a general exercise program. Over and over, researchers have shown that exercise is a great way to boost mood and energy levels, which combats symptoms of depression. Now, you can perform a balance exercise routine in the comfort of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Balance Exercises And Cardiac Rehabilitation

Balance Exercises Help After Coronary Bypass Surgery

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com Balance exercises are advantageous to practice after orthopedic surgeries like a knee replacement or hip replacement. Researchers are also finding that a balance exercises program is important for folks who survive Coronary Bypass Surgery. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Busch JC, Lillou D, Wittig G, in their study, Resistance and Balance Training Improves Functional Capacity in Very Old Participants Attending Cardiac Rehabilitation After Coronary Bypass Surgery, they looked at the benefits of a balance exercise program following coronary bypass surgery. The participants either followed a standard cardiac rehab exercises program or they received the cardiac rehab exercise program and additional resistance training and stability exercises. The researchers discovered that the participants who had the extra strength and balance training achieved significant improvements in all measured variables after a CABG (coronary bypass surgery procedure). With additional functional exercise training, participants randomized to the group with additional training improved significantly more than those randomized to the control group with only cardiac rehab.

Balance Exercises Assist Those Following Heart Surgery

Balance exercises and strength exercises, therefore, have been proven to benefit individuals following heart surgery. Stability routines can advance balance abilities and decrease the risk of falling. Equilibrium exercises contribute to strengthening the leg muscles needed for good steadiness. having good balance can also facilitate  pursuing a basic walking program after heart surgery. Senior Balance Exercises For The Aging Process

Senior Balance Exercises As We Age

By Suzanne Stoke, PT at Exercise For Balance, see more www.exerciseforbalance.com/ Senior Balance exercises are critical for our daily lives as we age. Senior balance exercises, like the ones presented in the professionally filmed Exercise For Balance DVD-- see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now, are important to practice everyday to improve balance reactions, advance stability and prevent falls. As we age, our balance problems increase. Recently, a study was done that related equilibrium exercises to aging.

Balance Exercises And The Effects Of Aging

Senior balance exercises were measured on older adults to see the impact on balance and fall prevention as we age. Konrad H.R., Girardi M. and Helfert R published their findings in, Balance and aging. Hypothesis: As we age, we lose balance function through loss of sensory elements, the ability to integrate information and issue motor commands, and because we lose musculoskeletal function. Diseases common in aging populations lead to further deterioration in balance function in some patients. Treatment of balance dysfunction in aging populations is based on the knowledge of normal aging processes and on an evaluation of the individual's balance loss and remaining balance elements. Prevention and rehabilitation, including balance exercises, play a major role in treatment; medical and surgical therapy also have a place.

Simple Balance Exercises Before You Head Out

Simple Balance Exercises Before Leaving Home

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Practicing some simple balance exercises on a daily basis can help you stay safe and prevent falls when you venture outside this winter. As a substantial winter storm races across the Midwest today, we are reminded that many times we face slick conditions as we navigate curbs, driveways and sidewalks.  One of the best ways to maximize balance abilities and prevent falling in snowy or icy conditions is to use the sensory feedback from our feet and the underlying surface we walk on. Our balance system in our brain relies on three main sensory inputs for stability.  These sensory inputs include vision, movement information from our vestibular system in the inner ear and the sense of touch between our feet and the ground.  In conditions where there is snow and ice, the most important sensory feedback to use is the sense of touch between our feet and the ground.  stability exercises that emphasize using sensory input from the feet and ankles is critical to perform on a daily basis before ever stepping foot outside the home.    Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Senior Balance Exercises And Predictors Of Falls

Senior Balance Exercises & Predictors of Falls

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com Senior balance exercises are essential to perform for folks over 60 years old. To assist in balance training, medical researchers have been fine tuning the components that predict falls, in order to prevent falling and the injuries that occur with falling. Yau DT, Chung RC, Pang MY. in their study, Knee Muscle Strength and Visual Acuity are the Most Important Modifiable Predictors of Falls in Patients after Hip Fracture Surgery, looked at the various contributors to falls.  Their purpose was to identify risk factors for falls among older adults who had recently undergone hip fracture surgery. The subjects in this study were 69 older adults (aged 65 years or more) who had sustained a hip fracture and were admitted to an orthopedic rehabilitation ward after surgery. Each individual was followed for a period of 6 months to obtain information on the incidence of falls. During the 6-month follow-up period, 10 of the 69 patients experienced one or more falls. The results showed that fallers were older than nonfallers. Fallers also had poorer performance in the high-contrast visual acuity test and lower knee flexor and knee extensor muscle strength values.   Their results showed that poor visual acuity and knee muscle weakness are modifiable predictors of falls and should be the key target areas in fall-prevention programs for older adults with hip fractures. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Senior Balance Exercises

Senior balance exercises can include the proper strengthening routines needed to build thigh and calf muscle strength that enhances balance abilities. Additionally, balance techniques should include specific instruction on how to use the sense of touch between your feet and the floor to help ground you and assist any balance problems that are a byproduct of decreased visual acuity. When stability exercises are practiced on a daily basis, they can advance balance reactions at the feet and ankles that are necessary to handle challenging balance situations. Nowadays, you can perform balance routines with an expert balance instructor through the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Balance Exercises For Those With A Hammertoe

Balance Exercises For Those Suffering With A Hammertoe

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/
Balance exercises can be beneficial for those individuals who are suffering with a foot condition called hammertoe. A hammertoe occurs when a toe curls at the middle joint and bends under an adjacent toe. A hammertoe most often develops from wearing tight shoes that have a small toe box. Often times, wearing high heels can contribute to the condition of hammertoe. With a high heel shoe or narrow shoe, the toes are pushed against the front of the shoe, which forces one toe under another creating an unnatural bending of your toe and a hammer like or claw like configuration . Having a hammertoe can be very painful for walking and standing.  Those with hammer toes also have balance problems and a greater risk for falling.   Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises Help Those With Hammertoes

Balance exercises, therefore, are essential for people with hammertoes to practice on a daily basis.  The painful and stiff condition at the toes make balancing more difficult.  Consequently, learning how to center the body's balance point through the center of the feet is critical for maintaining stability during walking and standing activities. Equilibrium exercises also assist in maximizing the persons balance reactions at their feet and ankles, which will help them to maintain an upright position in challenging balance situations.  Stability routines can also help to build strength in the feet and lower leg muscles, which are necessary for good balance, especially with going up and down stairs or walking on uneven terrain. Now, you can practice a balance exercise program every day in the comfort of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD

Balance Exercises And Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain

Balance Exercises Help Prevent Falls For Those In Pain

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/ Balance exercises are a foundational component of healthful living for many people including seniors, those who have had orthopedic surgeries, those with medical conditions and those who suffer with chronic pain. Chronic musculoskeletal pain can come from a number of sources including but not limited to: -Fibromyalgia -Diabetes -Arthritis -Herniated Discs in the Spine Chronic musculoskeletal pain has many effects on the body including limiting sleep, limiting activities, limiting social life, limiting work abilities and causing balance problems. Recently, medical researchers have investigated the correlation between chronic musculoskeletal pain and the incidence of falling. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises: Help For Those With Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain

In a recent medical study, researchers have looked at Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain, the rate of falling and balance exercises. Leveille SG, Jones RN, Kiely DK, in their report, Chronic musculoskeletal pain and the occurrence of falls in an older population, detailed the effects of balance routines and fall reduction for those with chronic pain.  The researchers found that the greatest risk for falls was observed in persons who had 2 or more pain sites. They concluded Chronic pain measured according to number of locations, severity, or pain interference with daily activities was associated with greater risk of falls in older adults. As we see in this study, chronic pain can lead to more falls. Thankfully, stability exercises can reduce the frequency of falling and prevent additional painful injuries.

Hypertension And The Risk Of Falls

Hypertension And The Risk Of Falling

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com Balance exercises have been proven to help individuals who have balance problems as well as those who have orthopedic or medical problems that can lead to falls. Recently, researchers wanted to know if there is a correlation between hypertension and the risk of falling. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Gangavati A, Hajjar I, in their study, Hypertension, orthostatic hypotension, and the risk of falls in a community-dwelling elderly population, looked at hypertension and the incidence of falling. Results: Participants with uncontrolled hypertension were at greater risk of falls. Consequently, since balance exercises have been proven to reduce falls, equilibrium routines can be of aid to those who have hypertension to help reduce the risk of falling.

Balance Exercises Help Those With Hypertension

Balance exercises are effective in improving balance and reducing falls for seniors or those with orthopedic problems like chronic ankle sprains or medical problems like diabetes and hypertension. Stability exercises enhance the body's balance reactions at the feet and ankles. Additionally, equilibrium exercises help to develop sensory awareness of the body's center of gravity, an essential component of staying steady. Now, a balance exercise program can be practiced at home with an expert in the field with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Fall Risk In Ritirement Homes

Fall Risk Appraisal For Retirement Homes

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com Many of us want the very best care for our parents as they age. We want to make sure they are safe and well taken care of in whatever living situation they end up in. Unfortunately, the statistic of one in three seniors falling every year is daunting. We do not want our elderly loved ones to be a part of that statistic. Ultimately, we want to know that if they have to be placed in a retirement home that they will not be at a greater  risk for falling.   Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises Reduce The Risk Of Falling

Recently, more and more medical research is coming out regarding balance exercises and reducing the risk of falling. Toraman A, Yildirim NU. in their study, The falling risk and physical fitness in older people, looked at balance routines and the fall risk.  This study was geared towards educating medical professionals working in retirement homes. This study includes 60 persons whose mean age was 73.3+/-6.6 years. Their demographic characteristics, cognitive function, their balance, falling risk and their physical fitness level have been evaluated. The research concluded that the old persons' falling risk and physical fitness level should be evaluated in some intervals. According to their falling risks and physical fitness level, the rehabilitation programs should be programmed to decrease their falling risk, and to increase lower and upper extremity muscle strength, aerobic endurance and especially their agility and dynamic balance performance.

Effects Of Balance Exercises In Older Adults

Benefits Of Balance Exercises For Older Adults

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Over the years, we have seen that balance exercises are the primary component in improving balance and reducing falls for seniors.  As the baby boomers age, we have seen a dramatic increase in the rate of falls and injuries from falls that affect the individual, family unit, emergency room volume, and cost to the medical system.  Medical researchers have been investigating various aspects of fall prevention to help reduce the incidence and frequency of falling for older adults.  please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Effects Of Balance Exercises In Older Adults

Balance exercises including proprioceptive techniques have been steadied by medical researchers.  Proprioception is the body's ability to determine where we are in space and how we are moving by the sensory feedback in every joint, muscle, ligament and tendon in the body. Martínez-Amat A, Hita-Contreras F, in their report, EFFECTS OF 12-WEEK PROPRIOCEPTION TRAINING PROGRAM ON POSTURAL STABILITY, GAIT AND BALANCE IN OLDER ADULTS, looked at balance exercises as a way to reduce falls in seniors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a 12-week specific proprioceptive training program on postural stability, gait, balance and fall prevention in adults over 65 years old. The researchers found  that the training program improved postural balance of older adults in medio-lateral plane with eyes open and anterior-posterior plane with eyes closed . After proprioception training, gait (Tinetti) and balance (Berg) tests scores improved 14.66% and 11.47% respectively. These results show that 12 weeks proprioception training program in older adults is effective in postural stability, static and dynamic balance, and could lead to an improvement in gait and balance capacity, as well as to a decrease in the risk of falling in adults aged 65 years and older.

Specific surfaces to pay attention to can include:

To Wear Shoes Or Not To Wear Shoes During Balance Exercises?

Should You Wear Shoes During Balance Exercises?

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com Balance exercises are a great way to start your day for anyone over the age of 60 years old or anyone who struggles with balance problems.  Equilibrium exercises are the absolute best way to improve balance and prevent falls.  As a physical therapist, I teach my patients how to perform stability exercises correctly for in the clinic and at home.  Many times, my patients ask what shoes they should wear during their balance exercise routine.  The options for foot where include:
--Barefoot
--Flat, Sturdy Shoes Like Tennis Shoes
--Low Heeled Shoes
--High Heeled Shoes
Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Shoes For Balance Exercises

Let's take a look at which shoes are best to wear during balance exercises. I do not often recommend going barefoot in the home because more and more these days people are developing plantar fascia pain and heel pain from low arches or flat feet.  Consequently, I advised people to wear good supportive shoes in the home to help decrease in the foot pain.  As a result, I often do not recommend practicing stability exercises in bare feet. Additionally, I do not recommend practicing equilibrium exercises in any kind of heeled shoe, whether that is a low heel or high heel. When we wear a shoe with a heel, it throws our body’s balance point forward and creates an imbalance and greater risk for falling. My best recommendation is to wear flat, sturdy shoes such as tennis shoes, walking shoes or hiking shoes.  These shoes provide the best support for the foot, which translates to added stability during a balance exercise program.  For more information from a balance expert about balance techniques and stability exercises, please see the Exercise For Balance DVD.
