    One of the principles of human physiology that affects senior balance exercises is the idea of Wolff’s Law. In a nut shell, this law affects every tissue in our body from bones, muscles, ligaments, to cartilage.  This principle also affects our balance system and therefore influences our balance abilities. Taking the example of bone, Wolff’s Law states that bone grows and remodels in response to the forces that are placed upon it. If the bone is injured, placing specific stress in specific directions to the bone can help it remodel and become normal healthy bone again. On the contrary, if a bone, ligament, muscle, or cartilage does not have stressors placed upon it then the tissue will atrophy.  As we apply this principle to our balance system, we can see that as we place stressors on our balance skills our balance abilities will strengthen. In residential aged care, routine vitamin D supplementation is highly effective in preventing falls and fractures. General practitioners are well placed to identify those at risk of falls and implement prevention strategies utilising other healthcare professionals as required. The general practitioner's role in educating and supporting patient behaviour change is critical to the uptake of falls prevention recommendations.
