Balance Exercises And Core Muscle Strength

Balance Exercises Enhance Core Muscle Strength

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/
Balance exercises are helpful for many reasons including:
-         improving balance
-         advancing balance reactions
-         increasing leg strength
-         reducing the risk of falling
-         enhancing core muscle strength
Core muscle strength is vitally important for activities of daily living, to decrease back pain, to improve posture and to better balance abilities.  The core muscles surround your lower back and abdomen area.  Core muscles are essentially made up by the layers of abdominal muscles including the Transverse Abdominus, Internal Oblique and External Oblique and Rectus Abdominus muscles. Additionally, core muscles are comprised of the layers of lumbar spine muscles including the Multifidus, Lumbosacral, Illiocostalis and Paraspinal muscles.  Ideally, these muscles on the front and back side of the spine should contract together to stabilize the spine, creating a firm foundation for all movements of the arms and legs.  When performing stability exercises, it is critically important to engage all core muscles.  Please see

Balance Exercises Enhance Core Muscle Strength

When you practice balance exercises, there is a huge difference in steadiness depending upon whether you keep your core muscles tight or whether you ignore your core muscles and have them relaxed.  With unengaged abdominal muscles, your foundation of stability is sloppy and weak.  During balance routines, when you tighten your core muscles your foundation for your entire trunk area becomes strong and steady.  By contracting your core muscles during stability exercises, you significantly advance balance abilities and reduce the risk of falling.  Consequently, be sure to pull in your abdominal muscles on the front side and squeeze together your back muscles on your rear side while practicing your daily equilibrium exercises.
