Latin Dancing And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Dancingbalance exercises for dancing

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Healthcare professionals and now medical researchers are touting the health benefits of dancing, especially when preceded by improving steadiness through practicing senior balance exercises. Please see more at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now As an example, research presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology/Lifestyle 2016 Scientific Sessions showed that a four-month dance program helped older Latino adults walk faster and improved their physical fitness, which may reduce their risk for heart disease. Furthermore, Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago tested whether a community-based intervention focused on Latin dancing could benefit 54 Spanish-speaking adults (about 65 years old, 80 percent Mexican female) who were not very physically active.  Participants were randomly assigned to either participate in a dance program twice a week for four months or to attend a health education program. All participants completed questionnaires about their leisure time physical activity and a 400-meter walk test at the start and end of the study. After four months of twice-weekly Latin dancing, researchers found:
·         Dancers walked faster and were more physically active during their leisure time than before they started dancing.
·         Dancers completed a 400-meter walk in just under 392 seconds compared with almost 430 seconds at the start of the study.
·         Leisure physical activity rose from 650 minutes to nearly a total of 818 minutes per week.
Those in the health education classes had a smaller improvements in their fitness – they finished the 400-meter walk in about 409 seconds at the end of the study compared with 419 seconds four months earlier; total time spent on weekly leisure physical activity increased from 522 minutes to 628 minutes over the course of the study. In addition to suggesting older individuals take up Latin dancing, medical researchers recommend that the aging person starts their dance program with senior balance exercises to establish necessary steadiness and limit the possibility of a fall.

Senior Balance Exercises For Safe Dancing

Dancing can be a fun way that older adults take in exercise during the week and dancing can be enhanced through first building a strong foundation of steadiness by practicing senior balance exercises every day. The benefits of dancing are numerous and include increasing one's heart rate, building leg strength, improving coordination, enhancing flexibility, building lung capacity And enjoying wonderful community and social interaction. You can improve your overall stability with your Latin dance moves by first rehearsing certain equilibrium exercises. As an example, you can practice standing on one foot and slowly then quickly swinging the other foot forward and backwards in a combination of static and dynamic equilibrium routines. Additionally, you can enhance your dynamic steadiness by sidestepping five steps in One Direction and then five steps in the opposite direction. By performing a sidestepping exercise, you will be able to build a strong platform of stability for more advanced moves in the Latin dances. You can learn how to perform correctly senior balance exercises by following the direction of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for Balance  DVD.

Stress can be a part of every day life for many older individuals and can be managed by getting safe  physical activity in, starting with senior balance exercises. Please see more information at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now For some senior citizens, the Golden Years can be challenging with health issues, financial struggles, loss of a loved one and much more. Older individuals can experience stress and the effects of stress just as much as their younger counterparts. Stress is your body’s way of responding to life’s challenges. Stress hormones release a fight or flight reaction when we are in danger. If we signal for danger about issues that are not necessarily a threat we can cause problems within our bodies’ response system.
Major physical symptoms of stress:
  • Low energy
  • Frequent headaches, jaw clenching or pain
  • Upset stomach including diarrhea, constipation and nausea
  • Aches, pains and tense muscles
  • Chest pain and rapid heartbeat
  • Insomnia
  • Reduced work efficiency or productivity
Major behavioral symptoms of stress:
  • Eating too much or too little
  • Short tempered
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Overuse of alcohol
  • Inability to finish tasks
Major emotional symptoms of stress:
  • Nervous or anxious
  • Irritable
  • Anger/ unhappy/ depression
  • Loneliness
  • Feeling helpless
Major cognitive symptoms of stress:
  • Difficulty with concentration/ focus
  • Forgetfulness
  • Constant worry
  • Being self-critical
  • Being pessimistic
What is stress management and when it is essential?
Stress management is the act of managing your stress. The first step of stress management is acknowledging the stress. Stress is normal and is a healthy reaction to challenges, but when the stressors negatively impact your health and well-being then it is a problem that must be managed.
How to manage stress
Join our weekly challenges to help get a handle on your stress. Strategies for managing stress include:
  • Finding the source of the stress
  • Maintaining a positive attitude
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Taking time for yourself
  • Unplugging from technology
  • Getting physical exercise
The first step towards being able to exercise safely without the fear of falling is to rehearse senior balance exercises to develop necessary stability.

Senior Balance Exercises To Reduce Stress

One of the best ways to manage stress is to get your heart rate up through participating in safe physical activity after you first practice senior balance exercises. One of the best ways to reduce stress is to go for a brisk walk. Before starting a walking program, it is essential to develop adequate steadiness for all gait patterns. One relevant equilibrium routine that will help develop needed steadiness for brisk walking involves tandem walking. With tandem walking, the goal is to walk with your toes of your back foot touching the heel of your front foot as you walk along a line. Tandem walking can be performed in the comfort of your own home by walking down a hallway or along a countertop. You can learn how to effectively perform tandem walking routines and other senior balance exercises by following the direction of a qualified physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.

Stand Tall And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Stability

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Older adults tend to give in to the effects of gravity and slump forward in their upper back, leading to poor posture and a need for practicing postural alignment exercises as well as senior balance exercises. Please see more information at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now A forward leaning posture not only puts an older adult at risk for falling forwards but it also affects the vertebrae in the upper back spine. As we know, growing older is accompanied by grey hair and wrinkles. Additionally, there are, however, changes in the body that occur below the surface. As an example, in later years older adults often experience changes in the bones of the spine where they become weaker and thinner. This process leads to a condition called osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can often be painful and lead to disabling spinal compression fractures. As a matter of fact, each year about 750,000 people which are mostly women experience spinal compression fractures. Additionally, these vertebral fractures are the most common side effect of osteoporosis. For all of us, throughout life we continually lose old bone and form new bone in the spine and throughout the body. As we age however, in our late 20s we begin to make more bone then we lose and those bones become stronger. After our 20s, bone growth and loss are about the same rate up until the age of 50. In our 50s, bone loss begins to take the lead ahead of bone growth. Furthermore, in women bone loss increases sharply after menopause. One result of this bone loss is that adults after the age of 50 who experienced a fall are more likely to sustain a spinal compression fracture. Consequently, it is critical for older individuals to limit their potential of falling. The best way to reduce the possibility of a fall is to rehearse senior balance exercises as part of a regular physical fitness program.

Senior Balance Exercises For Spine Health

Medical professionals such as doctors, physician assistance, nurses and physical therapists recommend that older adults practice specific senior balance exercises to limit their exposure to falling and potential spinal vertebral compression fractures due to a fall. One example of an equilibrium routine that older individuals can perform involves standing in a tandem stance manner. Tandem stance involves standing with one food directly behind the other foot for twenty seconds three times in a row and then switching with the other foot in front and standing twenty seconds three times in a row. Practicing tandem stance routines on a regular basis will help aging individuals to increase their balance reaction time and muscle strength in their lower legs and ankles, Thereby improving their overall stability as well as minimizing the risk for falling. You can learn how to practice tandem stance routines and other senior balance exercises by following the direction of unexperienced physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.

Walking Signs And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Safe Walking

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Some older adults who develop a slower and slower speed of walking  have demonstrated being at a greater risk for falling and need for practicing senior balance exercises. Please see more information at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Recently, medical researchers have been coming out with studies that provide an in depth look at walking in older adults. To be specific, medical researchers have been looking at the correlation between gait parameters like speed and step length and mental function. In fact scientists have shown that gait control in and of itself is a complex brain process, with recent reviews confirming the importance of the Central Nervous System to gait in non-demented older adults. Interestingly, one of the first outward signs which may suggest a cognitive impairment is a change in gait pattern.  For aging individuals, global cognition has been shown to longitudinally predict gait speed decline, so sometimes one of the first signs that we see in older folks with early onset of dementia is a slowing in that gait pattern. We also know that poor short-term memory and executive function (like memory, problem solving and task completion) have been associated with slow gait speeds during simple gait tasks, with some studies including attention and global cognition. Furthermore, early motor changes associated with aging predict cognitive decline, which suggests that there is this motor signature in gait that can be detected in pre-dementia states. In summary, often times in the physical therapy clinic, we see changes in older people's gait and thereby play a role in identifying cognitive changes, because it may be that you're the first person to notice that "motor signature" or an actual change in the gait pattern. With these changes in walking speed and coordination, these older individuals are at a greater risk for falling and getting hurt. As a result, these folks are encouraged to perform senior balance exercises on a regular basis to enhance their stability and reduce their risk for falling.

Senior Balance Exercises For walking Stability

Older adults who are experiencing a slow down in there walking speed may be also having cognitive changes which can lead to a greater risk for falling as well as a greater need for practicing senior balance exercises every day. To help improve overall stability and coordination with walking and other movement activities, aging individuals can practice tandem walking where they walk down a hallway in a heel to toe manor along a line. Over time, rehearsing Tandem walking will build strong balance reactions at the feet and ankles. Tandem walking also helps to enhance foot placement and coordination for those in the aging population. Tandem walking also establishes steadiness to help with walking on uneven surfaces like thick carpet, grass or hiking trails. Older individuals can practice tandem walking and other senior balance exercises in the comfort of their own home by following the directions of a qualified physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.

Managing Fatigue And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises To Boost Energy

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Being physically active can be an effective way to minimize feelings of fatigue and participating in senior balance exercises can help you be safe during all movement activities. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Fatigue is a common complaint among those in the aging population. Everyone feels tired now and then. For most people, however,  after a good night’s sleep, most people feel refreshed and ready to face a new day. If you continue to feel tired for weeks, it’s time to take action to see your doctor or to start a physical activity program. Your doctor may be able to help you find out what’s causing your fatigue and may even suggest ways for you to become more active. Feeling fatigued can be like an alarm going off in your body. It may be the first sign that something is wrong. But, fatigue itself is not a disease. For example, many older people live with rheumatoid arthritis, a painful condition that affects the joints, usually in hands or feet. In addition to their pain, people with rheumatoid arthritis often complain of other symptoms such as fatigue. Or, people with cancer may feel fatigued from the disease or treatments, or both. They may be dealing with pain and nausea as well. These are just two examples of situations where talking to your healthcare provider about feeling fatigue may lead to helpful solutions—for instance, adding mild exercises to your daily routine.
Many medical problems and treatments can add to fatigue. These include:
  • Taking certain medications, such as antidepressants, antihistamines, and medicines for nausea and pain
  • Having medical treatments, like chemotherapy and radiation
  • Recovering from major surgery
  • Fatigue can be linked to many emotions, including:
    • Anxiety
    • Depression
    • Grief from loss of family, friends, or home of many years
    • Stress from financial or personal problems
    • Feeling that you no longer have control over your life
Being bored can also make you feel fatigued. That may sound strange, but it’s true. If you have been very busy during your working years, when you stop working you may find yourself a little lost about how to spend your time. When you wake up in the morning, you may see long days stretching before you with nothing planned. It doesn’t have to be that way. Research shows that engaging in social and productive activities that you enjoy, like volunteering in your community, may help maintain your wellbeing. Think about what interests you and what you have to offer, and look for places to volunteer. Exercise or other physical activity may help relieve emotional problems such as boredom, anxiety and stress. When starting an exercise program, however, it is important to perform certain senior balance exercises first to make sure that you develop adequate stability for all movement activities.

Minimize Fatigue By Including Senior Balance Exercises

Staying physically active through participating in general fitness and daily functional routines beginning with senior balance exercises assists in maintaining a high quality of life. You can safely manage fatigue by staying active through daily equilibrium exercises. You can practice senior balance exercises in the comfort of your own home by following along with a qualified Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Superflex And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises With Superflex

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Technology is creeping into the market for older adults to be more steady at home and can be used in conjunction with practicing senior balance exercises to help maximize stability and reduce the risk of falling. Please see more information at  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now A new product is soon coming on the market called Superflex. Superflex is a technologically advanced product to help senior citizens with safe mobility. Superflex, a Menlo Park, California-based startup that’s just coming out of stealth mode, says it’s working on sensor-equipped, computer-controlled clothing for senior citizens who have trouble with mobility. The suit’s sensors are supposed to be able to track the posture and movement of the body, and rapidly process data to send a motor “assist” when the wearer is leaning forward in a chair, getting ready to stand up, or even starting to raise their arms above their head Superflex also said that it raised nearly $10 million in a Series A funding round led by Japanese venture capital firm Global Brain. While Superflex's first goal is to address the US market, where the 65-and-older population is expected to nearly double from 48 million to 88 million in the next three decades, Superflex also sees a big opportunity in Japan, where people over 65 make up a quarter of the country’s population. To be honest, you will have to wait a bit before Superflex's product is ready to be put on and used at home. Superflex’s robot suits won’t ship until at least 2018, and so far there isn't a working prototype to evaluate. The developers of stressed that Superflex is still in its earliest conceptual stages, and admitted that some important elements of the design — like where rechargeable batteries will go in the electric suit, and how long they’ll last for — are still to be determined. In the meantime, older individuals can start practicing senior balance exercises in the comfort of their own home to develop necessary awareness of balance skills to minimize the potential of falling.

Senior Balance Exercises For Fall Reduction

While you are waiting for your Superflex outfit to be developed, you can start rehearsing senior balance exercises to build needed steadiness for all movement activities. One of the features of the Superflex product is that it monitors where your body weight is to prevent you from tipping forwards and falling. You can learn how to determine the position of your body weight right now by practicing a specific equilibrium routine. The stability routines involves standing with your feet shoulder width a part and centering your weight in the middle of your feet. In this position, you can practice shifting your body weight slowly and in a controlled manner forwards and backwards and then side to side. This steadiness exercise will help you connect the sensory input from your feet to your brain that will help you be more steady overall. This exercise mimics the same principle that is provided by the Superflex product. YOu can get a jump start on improving your stability and reducing the possibility of a fall now while you wait for technology to catch up with the amazing balance system incorporated in your body. You can learn how to accurately perform these balance techniques and senior balance exercises by following along with the demonstration of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Advances In Diabetes And Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises For Diabetics

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Diabetes is a common illness for folks in America, resulting in changes including Diabetic Neuropathy, a sedentary lifestyle, immobility and the need to practice balance exercises. Please see more information at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  medical researchers have found breakthrough treatments which can help folks with Diabetes. To be specific,  patients with difficult cases of type 1 diabetes were helped by transplants of insulin-producing islet cells. The experimental therapy helped to prevent dangerous drops in blood sugar levels. People with diabetes have trouble managing and using blood glucose, a sugar that serves as fuel for the body. When blood glucose levels rise, islet cells in the pancreas normally make and secrete hormones such as insulin. Insulin triggers cells to take up sugar from the blood. In type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks and destroys these insulin-producing cells. People with type 1 diabetes must regularly measure their blood glucose and use insulin injections to maintain their blood sugar levels. When blood sugar levels drop too low (hypoglycemia), symptoms like shaking or sweating usually warn people to eat or drink to raise their blood sugar levels. However, many people with type 1 diabetes can’t tell when their blood sugar is too low. This raises their risk for severe hypoglycemia, which can cause seizures, loss of consciousness, and death. One strategy to treat type 1 diabetes is to transplant pancreatic islets from deceased human donors. To test this experimental procedure, National Institute of Health-funded researchers studied 48 people with hard-to-treat type 1 diabetes. Participants received at least one transplant of pancreatic islets. During the first year after treatment, 88% of participants were free of severe hypoglycemic events, had near-normal control of blood glucose levels, and were able to tell when their blood sugar was low. After 2 years, 71% still had these positive effects. Some people had side effects. Researchers are still monitoring the patients to assess the benefits and risks of this therapy. In the meantime, most Diabetic patients struggle with the complications of the disease that go beyond hypoglycemia. As an example, due to the changes in blood sugar, many diabetics experience neuropathy. Neuropathy involves causing pain and numbness in the lower legs. Having the lower legs numb also effects balance and mobility since the balance system in the body uses vision, inner ear vestibular feedback and sensory input from the feet to maintain a steady gait.

Balance Exercises For Neuropathy

Practicing balance exercises are critically important for those individuals who suffer with diabetic neuropathy. Since the brain uses three main sensory inputs to help with stability, we need to practice balance exercises every day especially when we suffer with diabetic neuropathy that changes the sense of touch from our feet. One such equilibrium routine that you can practice in the comfort and convenience of your own home involves standing with your feet shoulder width apart. In this position, you can imagine a line going through your body and centering in the middle of your feet. By concentrating on centering your body in the middle of your feet you will enhance your body sensory input leading back to the balance center in the brain. Centering your body weight will help enhance your overall steadiness with all movement activities. You can learn how to use this stability technique as well as learn other balance exercises by following the instructions of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.

3 Balance Exercises For Stenosis

Senior Balance Exercises For Spinal Stenosis

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Spinal stenosis is a common condition among aging individuals which can effect stability and require consistent practice of senior balance exercises. Please see more information at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now According to medical professionals, Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal. The spinal canal is located within the backbone, surrounded by boney vertebrae. The spinal canal is a small space that holds the nerve roots and spinal cord. If this space becomes smaller, it can squeeze the nerves and the spinal cord. This compression on the spinal cord causes pain and other symptoms like numbness and tingling. Stenosis can occur anywhere along the spinal cord. spinal stenosis is most commonly diagnosed in the low back (lumbar) region. The most common cause of spinal stenosis is aging, but other factors can stimulate it including:
-Osteoarthritis and bone spurs in the vertebrae
-Rheumatoid Arthritis
-Spinal tumors
-Trauma

Symptoms of spinal stenosis in older adults include:
  • Numbness, weakness, cramping, or pain in the legs and thighs
  • Radiating pain down the leg
  • Abnormal bowel and/or bladder function
  • Decreased sensation in the feet causing difficulty placing the feet when walking
  • Loss of sexual function
  • Partial or complete paralysis of legs
Spinal stenosis can be diagnosed by your doctor who will ask about your symptoms and medical history. A physical exam will be done.
    Tests may include:
    • X-ray —a test that uses radiation to take pictures of structures inside the body; in this case, to check for abnormalities in the bones of the back including osteoarthritis, bone spurs, and obvious narrowing of the spinal canal
    • CT scan —a type of x-ray that uses a computer to make pictures of the bony architecture of the back, which helps to evaluate the spinal canal
    • MRI scan —a test that uses magnetic waves to make pictures of soft tissue, such as the spinal cord and the spinal nerves inside the back
In the meantime, if you feel like you have some of the symptoms of spinal stenosis, it is imperative to start practicing senior balance exercises to help develop adequate steadiness and avoid a fall.

3 Senior Balance Exercises

For those diagnosed with spinal stenosis, you can help improve your steadiness by practicing senior balance exercises on a regular basis. There are many equilibrium routines that you can perform in the comfort of your own home. However, here are three suggestions of steadiness routines to practice on a daily basis.
1– single leg standing: with single leg standing you can stand near a sink or counter or stable object on one leg for 20 seconds and repeat three times on each leg.
2 – tandem standing: for tandem standing, you can stand with 1 foot directly behind the other foot along the line for 20 seconds three times and then switch your feet with the other foot in front for 20 seconds three times.
3– tandem walking: with tandem walking you can practice walking down a hallway along the line with 1 foot touching the other foot in a heel to toe fashion. You can learn how to perform these senior balance exercises and other equilibrium routines that will help you improve your stability and minimize the effects of numbness in your feet due to spinal stenosis by following the direction of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.

3 Travel Tips And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Traveling

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
To stay safe while traveling, older individuals should practice certain senior balance exercises  as well as follow specific safety tips. Please see more information at http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Research indicates that travel is at the top of the list of activities that seniors and the aging baby boomer generation enjoy. Furthermore, travel professionals report a rise in the number of tours designed for grandparents who want to spend time with their grandchildren — particularly during the holiday season. It’s true: today’s active seniors want to be part of the action and enjoy every moment of their next travel adventure. Many older adults love to take vacations on cruises, where they can see the world from the convenience of a cruise ship. Traveling by motor home has also become a popular pastime of many aging individuals. They can experience the beautiful scenery, historical sites, magnificent national parks and fun-filled cities of this great country. To make sure seniors enjoy their time visiting family, wherever it may be, it is important to know that there are some pitfalls to avoid and tips to promote safety when traveling.
1) Keep Moving. When traveling by plane, schedule walks up and down the aisle a few times to keep your circulation flowing. Poor circulation when sitting for long periods can sometimes cause blood clots to form in the legs and feet. Air travel in particular can increase the risk of developing blood clots.
2) Plan ahead. It’s always a good idea to make an appointment to see your physician before traveling. You want to make sure to refill any prescription medications so you do not run out while away. And don’t forget to pack your medications in your carry-on bag. While it’s a possibility you could arrive at your final destination without your favorite flannel robe, you want to do everything you can to make sure your medications arrive with you.
3) Practice senior balance exercises ahead of time. You can develop needed balance skills before you even step on a plane, motor home or cruise ship by performing balance training routines well in advance of your trip.

Senior Balance Exercises For Safe Travels

Before heading off for a vacation, it is essential for older individuals to rehearse specific senior balance exercises to enhance their overall steadiness and avoid falling while on a trip on vacation. There are several equilibrium routines that you can practice in the comfort of your own Home while you are getting prepared for your traveling expedition. As an example, you can practice standing with your feet shoulder width apart and centering your body weight in the middle of your ankles. In this standing position, try to keep your bodyweight centered in the middle of your feet and progress this routine by keeping  your eyes closed. You can progress this standing balance exercise by shifting your body weight slowly forward and backwards or side to side in order to learn how to control your body weight with different balance challenges. By learning how to shift your body weight in a controlled manner, you will have better stability while maneuvering on a plane, crew ship or motorhome. You can learn how to perform these stability techniques as well as learn specific senior balance exercises that will enhance your steadiness by joining in with a demonstration by a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.

Senior Balance Exercises For Arthritis

Arthritis And Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Medical researchers have studied the effects of strengthening and senior balance exercises for those who have been diagnosed with arthritis. Please see more information at  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Older adults commonly experience osteoarthritis in three main areas:
-Hips
-Knees
-Spine
Osteoarthritis frequently causes side effects that include: -muscular weakness and imbalance
-excessive joint movement and instability
- increased shear and peak joint forces
- cartilage degeneration
- joint collapsing
-muscle atrophy
-joint pain
-altered walking patterns and instability
-greater risk for falling
In addition, medical researchers and healthcare professionals recommend that aging individuals participate in trunk and leg strengthening exercises as well as senior balance exercises to help minimize symptoms of Osteoarthritis and imbalance.

Senior Balance Exercises For joint Arthritis

Since there is no cure for Osteoarthritis, treatments including strengthening routines and senior balance exercises are the current focus for management of symptoms. Pain relief, improved joint function,  joint stability and improved balance to reduce the potential of falling are the main goals of therapy. To combat muscle weakness and muscle atrophy, physical therapists suggest that those in the aging population rehearse resistance routines like mini squats and toe raises. as an example, you can stand near a counter or sink and slightly bend and straighten your knees to perform mini squats. Also, you can lift your heels up off the floor and back down to the floor in a calf raise exercise. Both of these strengthening routines can be performed twenty times a day. These exercises should be performed on a regular basis in order to counteract muscle atrophy, and these types of continuous exercise programs are recommended in people with degenerative joint disease and balance problems. In light of medical research, resistance type training has been proven to reduced pain and improve function for older individuals. Furthermore, after performing strength training routines, older adults were able to record increased walking speed on uneven terrains which led medical researchers to speculate that  resistance training also improved balance and proprioception. In summary, medical reports show clear improvement of Osteoarthritic  symptoms in patients undertaking exercise programs that include strength building and stability routines. Decreased pain and increased muscle function have been reported for both strengthening and balance training. One caveat however, is that  these effects do not persist if exercise programs are discontinued. Consequently,  the motivation of the patient to start and continuously practice exercise is of crucial importance. On another note, aging individuals who are unable to participate in repetitive exercise or sport programs should be encouraged to continue carrying out activities of daily life such as walking the dog, gardening, or biking to work. Additionally, now older adults can practice strengthening exercises and senior balance exercises in the comfort of their own home by following along with the instruction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.
