    We all know that practicing balance exercises to develop good balance is important to keep us on our feet and help us prevent falling. Some days, however, our lazy side takes over and wants to skip or balance training session.  On those days, we can be reminded by specific statistics that encourage us to stick to our equilibrium exercise routine to continue to advance our balance skills to the highest level.  Nowadays, medical researchers have gathered an enormous amount of information that is related to the senior population aging and more specifically the risks and results of falling for an individual older than 60 years.  For instance, statistics reveal that One third to one half of all people over the age of 65 years fall at least once per year. The average increases to 1.7 falls per year for people living in long-term care institutions, with 10% to 25% of these falls resulting in serious medical sequelae. More than 200,000 hip fractures occur annually in the United States as a result of falls, with a subsequent mortality rate of approximately 20% within 6 months. There are also numerous other effects of falls on the individual including a loss of quality of life, loss of independent living, loss of mobility and substantial financial hardship.  The falls among seniors also have a significant impact on the healthcare system both financially as well as taking care of these individuals. Furthermore, one half of older people who have experienced at least one fall admit having a prolonged fear of falling, and, as a result, 25% of these individuals decrease their activity levels. Stroke has been identified as the most prevalent diagnosis among adults who fall.  A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or severely reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and food. Balance Exercises For After A Stroke

    Balance exercises have been evaluated by medical researchers to determine the effectiveness of a balance program for individuals who have suffered a stroke. Ruth Ann Geiger, Jeffery B Allen, Joanne O’Keefe, and Ramona R Hicks, in their research study, Balance and Mobility following Stroke: Effects of Physical Therapy Interventions With and Without Biofeedback/Forceplate Training, looked at the effectiveness of balance exercises following a stroke. The physical therapy interventions for both the control and experimental groups included physical therapy techniques aimed at improving muscle force, range of motion, balance, and mobility. These interventions included mat activities (stretching and strengthening), weight bearing or shifting and standing lower-extremity exercise in parallel bars, and balance activities such as rocker-board and unilateral stance activities, tandem stance and ambulation activities, braiding, balance beam activities, and sitting on a Swiss ball with eyes open and eyes closed, as appropriate. One group of subjects also practiced their balance skills on the Balance Master forceplate. The researchers found that both groups of patient's improved their balance abilities with physical therapy intervention and the control group that used that Balance Master forceplate did not develop balance skills that were significantly greater than the group that did not use the forceplate. The results indicate that a simple balance exercise program that can be performed in the clinic or at home can effectively improve balance for stroke patients. Researchers have shown that wearing high heels leads to alterations in muscle-tendon architecture, resulting in fatigue, strain, plantar fasciitis and possible ankle sprains. Balance Exercises For Unusual Activities

 Balance exercises and balance training are a must for anyone who wants to strap on a snowboard. Snowboarding can be immensely fun, but it requires enormous balance abilities. For instance, to just attach your feet to the snowboard you need to apply a simultaneous combination of static and dynamic stability. Typically, when you get on and off the lift, you have one foot strapped on the board and the other foot free. The strapped in foot becomes your static balance mechanism. That leg must keep you upright while your other foot is pushing off dynamically to get you in position for the lift. If you make it on and off the lift successfully without falling, then you get the opportunity to use your balance skills to strap in the second foot. I find that in days when you get to board in powder, it is more effective to attach the second foot while standing rather than try to sit down and get up again in the deep snow. Attaching the second foot in standing is another challenge to ones balance. While maintaining static balance on the one attached foot, you must stabilize your center of balance and move your second foot into place. Remember, all this strapping in takes place on a slippery hill. Thankfully, I have been practicing my balance exercise routine with the Exercise For Balance DVD and have been able to advance my balance abilities to successfully manage the balance challenges necessary to go snowboarding.

Balance training and balance exercises and their influence on posture was recently investigated by medical researchers, O'Brien K., Culham E. and Pickles B. in their study, Balance and skeletal alignment in a group of elderly female fallers and nonfallers , they  looked at the synergy between balance training, balance abilities and posture. The purpose of this study was to determine whether sagittal plane posture differed between fallers and nonfallers and to explore the relationship between skeletal alignment and balance in elderly females. Spinal posture was measured in standing using an inclinometer, and lower extremity joint angles were assessed in standing using a universal goniometer. The Berg Balance Scale, the Functional Reach Test, and a modified Timed Get Up and Go Test were used to measure balance. Results suggest that knee joint angle was significantly greater in fallers compared to nonfallers. Significant, but low, correlations were found between the inclination of the upper thoracic spine and all three balance measures. Lower thoracic slope and knee joint angle in standing were also weakly related to two of the three balance measures. This study supports the hypothesis that a significant but weak relationship exists between balance and skeletal alignment in elderly females.

SCHLADMING, Austria (AP) -- The U.S. Ski Team says Lindsey Vonn has torn the ACL and MCL in her right knee and also has a broken bone after a horrific crash Tuesday at the world championships.

The team says Vonn will undergo surgery and will miss the rest of this season but is expected to return in time for the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

The team says Vonn has "a torn ACL and MCL in her right knee and a lateral tibial plateau fracture."

Vonn, of Vail, Colo., lost her balance on her right leg while landing a jump, flipped over in the air and landed on her backside as she smashed through a gate before coming to a halt.

The four-time overall World Cup winner and 2010 Olympic downhill champion received medical treatment on the slope for 12 minutes before being taken by helicopter to a hospital in Schladming.
