o    Make wider pathways: Older adults may need more space to get by with her new walker (likely about 36” or more).  Evaluate furniture arrangements and see if anything needs to go to make more room for seniors to get around.
o    Set up a “command center”: If need be (for example, while healing from an injury or surgery) an older adult may have a favorite chair, recliner, or lift chair where they will be spending most of their time throughout the day.  Help them set it up so that many of their basic needs are within an arm’s reach. You may want to help them make a space for her television remotes, reading materials, her telephone, calendar, tissues, mail, wastebasket, and maybe even medications. Television trays are also handy for meals.

This study shows that age-related differences in brain health - specifically the strength of connections between different regions of the brain - vary with fitness level in older adults. Michelle Voss led the study while a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Illinois with Beckman Institute director Arthur Kramer and kinesiology and community health professor Edward McAuley. Voss now is an assistant professor at the University of Iowa. "Our study provides the strongest evidence to date that fitness in an older adult population can have substantial benefits to brain health in terms of the functional connections of different regions of the brain," Kramer said. The study investigated the biomechanical response of the trunk and lower limb joints during a forward induced fall under different task conditions in people with and without knee osteoarthritis. The researchers found that when simulating a forward fall, participants with osteoarthritis demonstrated difficulty in absorbing the impact and slowing down the forward momentum of the body during a recovery step. Moreover, poor dynamic postural control was demonstrated as task complexity increased. As a result, individuals with knee osteoarthritis were more likely to fall forwards. Medical researchers and healthcare providers agree that older folks , especially those with arthritis and subsequent limitations in activity, should perform certain senior balance exercises to boost their steadiness skills and limit the possibility of a fall.

The research, presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, found that procedures using different types of cartilage "plugs" relieved pain and improved function in patients with articular cartilage damage. Dr. Williams performed cartilage restoration surgery using various types of "plugs" to fill in the hole, or damaged area. More than half of the patients received a synthetic plug. The other patients received either a donor cartilage plug or a small plug of cartilage transferred from another healthy area of their knee that did support their weight.  At the average follow-up of 3.5 years, the vast majority of patients reported higher activity levels and decreased pain, as well as a high degree of satisfaction with the procedure, according to Dr. Williams. We study the connection between diet and many other aspects of health, but we don't know much about diet and mobility, " says Francine Grodstein, ScD, senior author of the study and a researcher in the Channing Division of Network Medicine at B Brigham and Women's Hospital .  "We wanted to look at diet patterns and try to learn how our overall diet impacts our physicial function as we get older. " Overall, the data indicate that women who maintained a healthier diet were less likely to develop physical impairments compared to women whose diets were not as healthy. More specifically, the researchers also found a higher intake of vegetables and fruits, a lower intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, trans-fats, and sodium, and a moderate alcohol intake, were each significantly associated with reduced rates of physical impairment. Among individual foods, the strongest relations were found for increased intakes of oranges, orange juice, apples and pears, romaine or leaf lettuce, and walnuts. "We think a lot about chronic diseases, cancer, heart disease, and tend not to think of physical function. Physical function is crucial as you age; it includes being able to get yourself dressed, walk around the block, and could impact your ability to live independently," says Kaitlin Hagan, ScD, MPH, first author and a postdoctoral fellow at Brigham and Women's Hospital . Medical researchers have also found that in addition to eating nutritious food, aging individuals who participate in senior balance exercises reduce their rate of falling and maintain a mobile and healthier lifestyle for longer.
