Since diminishing eyesight is part of a common experience for older adults, performing senior balance exercises on a regular basis is essential to maximize balance abilities and minimize the potential for falling. One of the common diagnoses that accompany decreased vision is macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is an eye disorder associated with aging, which gradually causes loss of clear central vision. For individuals with macular degeneration, the retina, which is located on the inside surface of the back of your eye, is effected. The macula, in the center of the retina, is responsible for your reading and fine vision. In age related macular degeneration, the macula begins to deteriorate, causing symptoms that can range from blurred central vision to a blind spot in the center of vision. Currently, healthcare providers recognize two types of macular degeneration:
·         Dry age-related macular degeneration. By far the more common type, dry macular degeneration occurs when the light-sensitive tissues in the macula thin and break down. This loss of tissue gradually causes blurry central vision. Dry macular degeneration occurs in stages — early, intermediate and advanced.
·         Wet age-related macular degeneration. In wet macular degeneration, abnormal blood vessels under the retina begin to grow, leaking blood or fluid, causing damage to the macula. Wet age related macular degeneration can cause rapid central vision loss. Wet macular degeneration almost always begins as dry macular degeneration.
With the decrease in central vision that occurs with macular degeneration, the older individual is more likely to have balance problems and a greater risk for falling and injuring themselves.
