Senior Balance Exercises Following A Knee Replacement

Senior Balance Exercises For After Knee Surgery

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
To get back on your feet after a knee replacement surgery, it is imperative to practice specific senior balance exercises on a regular basis. Most of the time, total knee replacement surgery occurs when osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis is severe enough to limit function making it difficult for walking, stairclimbing, getting out of the chair or other activities of daily living. The long term benefit of having replacement surgery is a decrease in pain and increase in functional capabilities, especially those that require weight bearing movements like walking and standing. Early on after a total knee replacement surgery, however, the individual experiences pain, stiffness, swelling, decreased mobility and impaired balance. Consequently, most older adults are referred to physical therapy following their knee surgery to help decrease pain and to restore flexibility, strength and steadiness. Senior Balance Exercises Help With Steadiness

After knee surgery, practicing senior balance exercises can assist with improving steadiness and leg strength. Because the proprioceptive (the body’s ability to know where it is in space and how it is moving) system is impaired following knee surgery, equilibrium exercises help to restore the sensory feedback of where the knee is in space and how it is moving. One specific exercise that will assist in proprioceptive feedback is to stand with the feet shoulder width apart and align the body’s center of gravity in the middle of their base of support established by the feet. Next, the individual can concentrate on shifting their body weight side to side and front to back, to learn how to control the body’s weight shifting abilities. Once good weight shifting control has been established, then the individual can move on to developing strong and speedy balance reactions at the ankles, by standing with their feet along a line in a tandem stance position. This will create rapid balance movements at the feet and ankles as the individual naturally corrects for the changing weight shifting. These balance exercises and balance training techniques and be practiced in the convenience of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.
