Balance Exercises After A Patella Fracture

Balance exercises are essential for older adults in general and specifically for those who had fallen and sustained an injury such as a patella fracture. When a person trips and falls on their knees, they can easily fracture the kneecap, called the patella. I have had two recent patient's in physical therapy who had fallen and sustained a patellar fracture. One unlucky fellow fell in his driveway while getting the mail. He fell onto his knee and fractured his right patella and injured his right patellar tendon. The fall occurred in the late afternoon on a cold and snowy day. He described lying on the hard cement for several hours with no one to help him get up. During that time, his body heat melted the snow below him, which later froze as the time went by. When an eighty year old neighbor came out hours later and saw him, they called the paramedics who had to cut his jeans off because they were frozen to the ground. The gentleman was rushed to the hospital where he had surgery to repair his patellar tendon and patella fracture. His recovery included wearing a long leg brace for several weeks and starting rehabilitation in physical therapy. In addition to focusing on increasing knee range of motion and lower leg strength, we also addressed his balance problems. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises For After A Patella Fracture

Balance exercises are a critical component of rehabilitation following a patella fracture. After fracturing the patella, the individual’s mobility is quite limited, which affects functional activities such as climbing stairs, getting out of a chair, and walking with a balance. Consequently, it is imperative to begin balance exercises immediately during rehabilitation. One of the first stability routines that is important to master is learning to shift weight side-to-side and front to back without losing ones balance. Additionally, equilibrium exercises can be progressed to include equipment like balance boards or soft foam, which challenges the balance reactions at the feet and ankles. You can practice these balance exercises at home by following along the Exercise For Balance DVD, developed by an experienced physical therapist.
