Senior Balance Exercises And Aerobic Activities Boost Mental Abilities

Senior Balance Exercises And Aerobic Activities Boost Mental Abilities

Senior balance exercises combined with aerobic activities help to enhance mental capacity in older adults. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Recently medical researchers have investigated the effectiveness of stability exercises and aerobic activities on mental function. Hayley Guiney and Liana Machado published a study in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review that revealed that older people can retain and even improve certain mental abilities through aerobic exercise, including mental tasks associated with driving. Particular aspects of cognitive function such as task switching, selective attention and working memory among others, all appear to benefit from aerobic exercise. Studies in older adults reviewed by the researchers consistently found that fitter individuals scored better in mental tests than their unfit peers. In addition, intervention studies found scores in mental tests improved in participants who were assigned to an aerobic exercise regimen compared to those assigned to stretch and tone classes. The physical benefits of regular exercise and remaining physically active, especially as people age, are well documented. This new study, however, says it is not only the body which benefits from exercise, but the mind too. Both the updating of working memory and the volume of information which could be held was better in fitter individuals or those put on an aerobic exercise regime. The authors conclude that engagement in exercise can provide a simple means for people to optimize their cognitive function. Healthcare professionals and medical researchers agree that the first step towards starting an aerobic fitness program is to begin with balance exercises, in order to build a strong foundation of steadiness for all workout routines.

Senior Balance Exercises For Aerobic Conditioning

By practicing senior balance exercises before starting an aerobic fitness program, you will be able to develop a strong base of stability to stay safe while you progress to more difficult activities. For instance, having good balance is essential before stepping on to a moving treadmill or elliptical machine. You can begin equilibrium exercises with static holds and a narrow base of support. In time, you can then progress to dynamic balance activities with equipment like a balance board. Additionally, you can take dynamic movement routines to the next step by adding a moving lunge sequence. You can follow these balance exercises developed by an experienced Physical Therapist in the convenience of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD. When your balance is steady, you can begin more advanced aerobic routines to enhance your cardiovascular fitness as well as your mental capacity.  Have fun!
