Following a daily routine of senior balance exercises and strengthening exercises can keep you agile and strong to continue activites of daily living at home or community events out side of the home. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now For those individuals who have difficulties with getting out because of medical conditions or transportation limitations, now you can practice equilibrium routines in the comfort of your own home. Described here are some ideas adapted from our physical therapy clinic to peform stability skills at home. At home, in a safe environment like near a counter or stable table that you can grab on to if need be, create an unstable surface by using either a Bosu ball or a couple of thick pillows. First, stand on top of the Bosu or pillows and balance on one leg. Once you develop adequate stability while standing on one foot, you can then progress the routine by swinging the other leg back and forth or side to side. After one to two minutes,  switch legs and repeat the process. For those who find standing on a BOSU or pillows to be too difficult,  try sitting on the BOSU or a Swiss or Physio ball with your legs straight in front of you and shift your weight from side to side. Another steadiness exercise you can attempt is to stand on the unstable surface and lift your right arm straight out in front of you while swinging your left leg back and forth, and vice versa. This exercise to works on a combination of coordination and balance. With all of these routines, you can make the exercise more challenging by trying each activity with your eyes closed to help decrease your reliance on vision for balance, but be sure your steadiness is adequate to attempt an exercise with your eyes closed.
