BALANCE EXERCISES Are A Part of the AMAs Recommendations

Balance Exercises Are Recommended for Seniors
There have been many research studies published in the last few years that illuminate the benefits of exercises on our health, cognition, and social life. Because of our aging population, there is a greater focus on balance exercises. More research is coming out all the time that proves that daily balance exercises can improve balance and reduce the risk of fall. The American Medical Association has compiled these research results into specific guidelines. The AMA includes balance exercises in those exercises recommended for seniors.

Balance Exercises Need To Be Part Of Our Daily Routine

Elsawy B; Higgins KE
Abstract:
Few older adults in the United States achieve the minimum recommended amount of physical activity. Lack of physical activity
contributes to many chronic diseases that occur in older adults, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus, lung disease, Alzheimer disease, hypertension, and cancer. Lack of physical activity, combined with poor dietary habits, has also contributed to increased obesity in older persons. Regular exercise, including balance exercises, and increased aerobic fitness are associated with a decrease in all-cause mortality and morbidity, and are proven to reduce disease and disability, and improve quality of life in older persons. In 2008, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released guidelines to provide information and guidance on the amount of physical activity recommended to maintain health and fitness. For substantial health benefits, the guidelines recommend that most older adults participate in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, or an equivalent combination of each per week. Older adults should also engage in strengthening activities that involve all major muscle groups at least two days a week. Those at risk of falling should add balance exercises that help maintain or improve balance. Generally healthy adults without chronic health conditions do not need to consult with a physician before starting an exercise regimen.(c) 2010 American Academy of Family Physicians.
