Shovelling Snow And Balance Exercises

 Balance Exercises For Snow Removal

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comht_ski_stunt_kab_141211_16x9_992
During these long Winter months, it is essential to practice balance exercises for adequate steadiness when navigating on snow and ice. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now The nation has been hit with freezing temperatures and snowy conditions. Millions of  Americans across the country are faced with shoveling snow off walkways and driveways as well as trying to ambulate on slick and icy surfaces. Falls on icy sidewalks or parking lots is one of the more common occurrences leading to injuries during the Winter months. This injury is preventable if you know certain balance techniques and practice specific equilibrium exercises ahead of time. A few important factors to keep in mind include:
-Pace yourself. When you  hurry or make sudden moves  on slick surface, you are likely to fall.
-Focus on your foot placement to provide as much sensory feedback to the balance center in your brain as possible.
-Take each step in a flat footed manner to maximize the surface area between your foot and the snow.
-Use an assistive device  like a walking stick when needed for extra stability.

 Balance Exercises For Icy Surfaces

When faced with walking on snowy or icy surfaces, it is recommended that you follow specific stability techniques as well as perform balance exercises in advance. One of the first steadiness techniques is to learn to center your body weight in the middle of your feet and to learn to control the weight your body weight shifts as you move. To get started, try standing with your feet shoulder width a part and line up your body weight right in the middle of your arches. Next, practice slowly controlling your body weight as you lean forwards and backwards. By learning to recognize where your body weight is lined up and how to control it within your base of support, you will be more stable when you encounter slick conditions like icy driveways or sidewalks. You can rehearse these stability techniques and a step by step series of balance exercises to prepare you ahead of time for challenging conditions by following the instruction of an experienced Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Avoid Slips And Falls With Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Reduce Falls

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.combalance exercises for dancing
One of the fears facing older adults is that they will fall and injure themselves, but medical researchers have demonstrated that by practicing senior balance exercises as a daily routine, aging individuals are less likely to fall. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now To be specific, medical researchers,  Howe T.E., Rochester L., Jackson A., Banks P.M.H. and Blair V.A., investigated the correlation between performing senior balance exercises and the decrease in falling for older adults. The summary of their study is as follows: Background: Diminished ability to maintain balance may be associated with an increased risk of falling. In older adults, falls commonly lead to injury, loss of independence, Associated illness and early death. Although some exercise interventions with balance and muscle strengthening components have been shown to reduce falls it is not known which elements, or combination of elements, of exercise interventions are most effective for improving balance in older people. Objectives: To present the best evidence for Effectiveness of exercise interventions designed to improve balance in older people living in the community or in institutional care. RESULTS: Statistically significant improvements in balance ability were observed for BALANCE Exercise interventions compared to usual activity. Interventions involving gait; balance; co-ordination and functional exercises; muscle strengthening; and multiple exercise types appear to have the greatest impact on indirect measures of balance.

Improve Steadiness With Senior Balance Exercises

For those folks in the aging population, on those days when we would rather relax in a recliner than get up and work on our balance, just remember that scientific studies really do show that practicing balance exercise will reduce the number of falls and improve balance. Many studies have validated the notion that combining equilibrium routines with lower extremity exercises is the most effective way to enhance stability for older adults. Thankfully, now there is a program that you can practice at home that includes leg strengthening exercises with specific senior balance exercises to maximize your balance abilities. the Exercise For Balance DVD was developed by an experienced Physical Therapist with senior citizens in mind to help them improve their steadiness and maintain an active and independent lifestyle.

Gait Disturbances And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Lead To A Steadier Gait

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comWalking- Exercise for balance for walking
By practicing senior balance exercises on a consistent basis, older individuals are able to enhance their stability with walking. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers have noted that gait and balance problems are common with advancing age. Disorders of balance and gait are particularly important in the elderly because they compromise independence and contribute to the risk of falls and injury, such as a hip or wrist fracture. Although they are considered as separate clinical entities, balance and gait disturbance are often intertwined.
The pattern of how a person walks is called the gait. Different types of walking problems occur without a person's control. Most, but not all, are due to a physical condition.
Some walking abnormalities have been given names:
  • Propulsive gait -- a stooped, stiff posture with the head and neck bent forward
  • Scissors gait -- legs flexed slightly at the hips and knees like crouching, with the knees and thighs hitting or crossing in a scissors-like movement
  • Spastic gait -- a stiff, foot-dragging walk caused by a long muscle contraction on one side
  • Steppage gait -- foot drop where the foot hangs with the toes pointing down, causing the toes to scrape the ground while walking, requiring someone to lift the leg higher than normal when walking
  • Waddling gait -- a duck-like walk that may appear in childhood or later in life                                                                                                                    When an individual has a problem with walking such as the conditions mentioned above, it is extremely important for them to rehearse senior balance exercises in order to enhance their walking abilities and minimize any potential for falling.

Senior Balance Exercises For Safe Gait

Healthcare professionals like doctors, physical therapists, nurses and caregivers recommend daily exercises including senior balance exercises to help enhance stability with walking. For people who have gait issues like foot drop, ataxia or other conditions mentioned above, performing simple static and dynamic stability exercises will dramatically enhance steadiness with walking movements. As an example, static standing equilibrium routines can involve standing on one foot (be sure to stand near a counter or table when trying these exercises). In time, you can progress to dynamic stability routines like walking heel to toe along a line. These static and dynamic senior balance exercises can be practiced every day by following the direction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Promote Physical Activity With Balance Exercises

Promote Physical Activity With Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comBalance exercises for golf
One of the first steps towards increasing daily activity is to perform balance exercises to enhance stability and prepare for beginning a fitness program. Please see     http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Since according to medical professionals "SITTING is the new SMOKING, " it is essential to have adequate balance before engaging in a physical fitness program. Medical researchers throughout  the United States, are starting to amass a  robust body of clinical research that supports the public-health message that being sedentary by, say, parking your duff at the cube for an honest day’s wage, is failing our long-term health.  Some researchers are concluding that sitting eight hours daily can shave years off your life. Like smoking, cardiovascular experts say, the decision to sit is our own. It’s preventable. It’s deliberate. We can quit it. Furthermore, researchers say brain function slows as we sit for longer periods, making our thought processes a little fuzzier. Without the added blood flow, oxygen and beneficial mood-enhancing chemicals that movement brings, our bulbs burn a little dimmer. A study published earlier this year in the Journal of Physical Activity & Health said sedentary behavior could increase the odds that, after age 60, we’ll face a 46 percent greater probability of suffering some level of disability in performing ordinary daily skills such as feeding ourselves and moving around without mishap. That could hinder efforts to stay independent. Additionally, sitting too long may coax the pancreas to produce too much insulin, leading to higher risks of diabetes. In addition,  that excess insulin may just turn out to be a cancer cell’s best friend, allowing for more cell growth. A sedentary lifestyle also leads to general weakness and imbalance, leading to a higher risk for falling. Conversely, getting up and exercising rigorously boosts our natural antioxidants that kill cell-damaging free radicals leading to specific cancers, such as endometrial, breast and colon carsinomas, said Dr. Daniel Parker.

Balance Exercises To Increase Activity Levels

The first step towards overcoming a sedentary lifestyle is to start with balance exercises to develop substantial steadiness for any type of fitness program. You can start with single leg standing exercises ( standing on one foot for twenty seconds, three times in a row), which are one of the basic components of walking. You can progress to walking along a line, heel to toe. In this tandem stance position, you will challenge your balance reactions at your ankles and prepare you for walking outdoors on uneven surfaces like grass and trails. You can learn these balance exercises and other stability techniques by following the direction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Senior Balance Exercises For Sore Feet

Senior Balance Exercises For Sore Feet

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
A common malady for older adults is Plantar Fasciitis, sore and painful arches, which can be helped with orthotics, massage and senior balance exercises. Please see     http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Plantar fasciitis  is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It involves pain and inflammation of a thick band of tissue, called the plantar fascia, that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes. Plantar fasciitis commonly causes stabbing pain that usually occurs with your very first steps in the morning. Once your foot limbers up, the pain of plantar fasciitis normally decreases, but it may return after long periods of standing or after getting up from a seated position. Senior citizens who suffer with foot pain can find themselves having problems with balance as well. Quite often when a person experiences foot pain, they change the weight-bearing placement in their feet, trying to reduce their discomfort. As a result, the person's balance point is altered, throwing them off-balance and at a greater risk for falling.

Senior Balance Exercises

Practicing  senior balance exercises on a daily basis can be one solution to help individuals with foot pain to not shift their weight in a manner that diminishes their balance reactions and leads to a greater risk for falling. Steadiness routines maximize balance reactions at the feet and ankles, which improves steadiness and reduces falls. Equilibrium routines also strengthen the brain-body connection which is vital for adequate stability. Furthermore, healthcare professionals like doctors and physical therapists have  several tips to help reduce foot pain in the first place. Dr Johnson at Mass General Hospital in Boston suggests moving the feet and ankles up and down and in circles to increase circulation in the feet and lower legs. Furthermore, Dr Johnson recommends taking a break twice a day to stretch the calf muscles, reducing the tension in the Achilles Tendon and Plantar Fascia. Additionally, since our feet have to support our entire body weight, losing weight can help diminish foot pain. Dr Johnson says, "Every pound of weight lost is like 3 to 4 pounds in decrease on the feet and ankles." For more information and instruction on senior balance exercises and strength exercises to help you improve stability , please see the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Fitness Approach And Balance Exercises For Diabetes

Physical Activity And  Balance Exercises For Diabetics

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comwalking balance exercises
Being involved in a fitness program, starting with balance exercises, is essential for individuals struggling with Diabetes. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical research has contributed to a wealth of knowledge regarding Diabetes. Within the healthcare community and the public at large, it seems you can not pick up a newspaper or magazine without seeing a feature on the diabetes epidemic overwhelming the U.S. and other westernized nations and their healthcare systems.  Although it is estimated that 8% of the population in the United States has this disease, there’s still a lot of confusion as to what is diabetes. There are three types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2 and gestational. Each type of Diabetes is caused by the body’s inability to make or utilize insulin. Without enough insulin glucose stays in the blood and can subsequently cause damage to the kidneys, heart, eyes, nerves and other organs. Type 2 diabetes is onset in adulthood and although there are several factors involved, the best predictor of developing this form of the disease is being overweight or obese and having a sedentary, inactive lifestyle.  There are other factors like the existence of high blood pressure, age and family heredity, but as a person diagnosed with diabetes, you as the individual still have the power to impact the disease. In treatment of diabetes, whole fitness techniques meaning holistic diet, fitness for the body and focusing on a balanced mind, can be an important key to minimizing the effects and subsequently, the insulin dependency. One of the first steps towards starting a fitness program is to practice balance exercises, to enhance overall steadiness with movements and limit any possibility of a fall.

Balance Exercises For Safe Fitness Programs

By beginning with balance exercises, you can develop an adequate level of stability needed to embark on a fitness program. As an example, you can work on weight shifting equilibrium routines where you stand with your feet shoulder width a part and you control how your body weight shifts forwards and backwards in a smooth rhythm. Once you feel comfortable with controlling how your body weight shifts, then you can begin a weight lifting fitness program where you perform bicep curls while doing lunges forwards and backwards. This combined movement and weight lifting exercise develops strong muscles and good balance. YOu can learn these stability techniques and a series of step by step balance exercises developed by an experienced Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Happy New Year From Exercise For Balance

Have A Happy New Year With Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Make practicing balance exercises part of your new year's resolution. Balance exercises can help us all start the New Year on good footing.  As we look around at the financial, political, social and medical struggles that surround us and our families, community and nation, we realize that there are few things we can control in our lives.  Thankfully, by practicing stability exercises on a daily basis we have a better opportunity to eliminate falls and any resulting injuries from falling. Each year, millions of adults aged 65 and older fall.1 Falls can cause moderate to severe injuries, such as hip fractures and head traumas, and can increase the risk of early death. Fortunately, falls are a public health problem that is largely preventable. Practicing equilibrium exercises helps to give us a peace of mind that our efforts will have a beneficial effect that can lead to positive results in our lives.  Medical researchers have proven over and over again that performing a balance exercise routine on a daily basis both improves balance abilities and limits the risk of falling.  Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-

Balance Exercises In The New Year

A daily dose of balance exercises can help you stay steady and active throughout the New Year. Medical statistics reveal that :
  • One out of three older adults (those aged 65 or older) falls each year but less than half talk to their healthcare providers about it.
  • Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries.
  • In 2013, 2.5 million nonfatal falls among older adults were treated in emergency departments and more than 734,000 of these patients were hospitalized.
  • In 2012, the direct medical costs of falls, adjusted for inflation, were $30 billion.
  • Twenty to thirty percent of people who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries such as lacerations, hip fractures, and head traumas.  These injuries can make it hard to get around or live independently, and increase the risk of early death.
  • Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
  • In 2000, 46% of fatal falls among older adults were due to TBI.
  • Most fractures among older adults are caused by falls. The most common are fractures of the spine, hip, forearm, leg, ankle, pelvis, upper arm, and hand.
  • Many people who fall, even if they are not injured, develop a fear of falling. This fear may cause them to limit their activities, which leads to reduced mobility and loss of physical fitness, and in turn increases their actual risk of falling.
  •    The best way to eliminate falling is to perform steadiness exercises every day.                                                                                                                                                                                                                   You can start the New Year with specific balance training and balance exercises through the Exercise For Balance DVD, developed by a knowledgeable Physical Therapist. The balance DVD will guide you through specific stability training techniques that will strengthen the connection between your brain and body, which will enhance your balance reactions at your feet and ankles. The DVD includes specific information that will help you be nimble and stay steady on various surfaces, like walking on ice, snow, rugged hiking trails, and uneven sand at the beach. Balance exercises are the perfect foundation to build stability for adding additional cardiovascular and strengthening exercises at the gym. Adding equilibrium exercises to your gym workout can also maximize your core strengthening abilities and burn additional calories. When you hit the gym in January, be sure to add balance routines.
