Balance Exercises As Part Of Our Growing Up
Balance exercises were incorporated into our daily play activities when we were growing up. Think back on all the fun games we played as children that required and developed our balance skills. One such activity was bouncing on a pogo stick. I remember trying to walk on stilts as a kid. Hopscotch was another great past time that demanded and integrated both static and dynamic balance skills. Often times, I marveled at my friend’s balance abilities while riding a unicycle. The game of Twister also helped to develop core muscle strength and static balance while reaching and holding new positions on the colored circles. Another fun activity was jump rope, which demanded timing, coordination and excellent balance reactions. As older adults, we may not be able to get back on a pogo stick, but we can reminisce about those times while we are practicing our standing balance exercises. The act of recalling those memories releases positive and mood elevating neuro chemicals in our brains that heightens our positive emotions and enables us to enjoy the current activity of performing balance exercises. Additionally, we can add to our balance exercises fun activities like square dancing and may be even hopscotch.
