Balance Exercises For Rowing Machines

Balance Exercises For Safety With Rowing Machines

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
In order to get an optimal and safe workout on a rowing machine, it is suggested to practice a few stability techniques and  balance exercises before starting your fitness routine. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now working out on a rowing machine is an ideal method to achieve a fantastic cardiovascular workout, upper and lower body strengthening and weight loss.  Using a rowing machine is a very efficient way to burn calories, get your heart rate elevated and build upper and lower body strength. Here's why-- with each stroke in rowing,  pretty much every part of the body is used. The rowing motion uses 60 percent legs and 40 percent upper body as well as core muscles. Garrett Roberts, an exercise physiologist and personal trainer says that,  "Rowing burns two to three times the amount of calories of Spinning." "Unlike a bike, which only has resistance in one direction, rowing has resistance in both directions—forward and back—making you much stronger and increasing the rate at which you burn calories."

Balance Exercises To Be Safe On A Rowing Machine

Before jumping on a rowing machine, it is recommended that you start with a few simple stability strategies and balance exercises. Since the rowing machine involves a sliding seat which constantly moves back and forth as well as movement of your back from about a 2 O'clock to 10" O' Clock position, it is good to learn how to control how your body weight shifts during motion. As an example, when you first sit on the rowing machine seat, start with centering your body weight as if there is a plumb line flowing through your head, spine, middle of your pelvis and into the seat on the machine. Next, as you slide back and forth on the rowing machine, try to control your body weight shifting by keeping your core muscles tight and by imagining your upper body moving through an arc from 2-10 O'clock. You can learn practical strategies on how to maintain your body alignment and how to perform needed balance exercises by following along with the instruction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Simple Stretches And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Stretching Routines

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Executing simple stretches in combination with senior balance exercises can help older adults stay more flexible and less painful as they age. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now In later years, we tend to become stiffer in key muscles that can lead to back pain, leg pain, imbalance and decreased function. Back pain and leg pain can make it hard to get around as well as to accomplish household chores such as cleaning the bathroom, taking out the trash, doing the laundry, standing for a long time to cook a meal and walking up and down stairs. Furthermore, common every day back soreness and leg discomfort can result in decreased balance reactions and a higher risk for falling. Thankfully, there are some simple stretching exercises and stability routines that will assist in both decreasing pain levels and improving steadiness with all movement activities.

Senior Balance Exercises And Stretching Exercises

a comprehensive course of stretching exercises and senior balance exercises will assist in minimizing back and leg pain and maximizing overall steadiness. One example of a stretch that helps with back pain is a hip flexor stretch. Here’s how to do it.
  1. Stand in a modified runner stance, with right foot forward and left foot back, feet flat on floor.
  1.  Put your hands on your hips and keep your back and hips in straight alignment.
  1.  Push forward with your hips, keeping your posture erect. Slowly push your hips forward until you feel a comfortable level of tension.
  1. Hold for a 30 count.
  1. Switch sides by reversing your leg stance and repeat.
Additionally, you can execute a calf muscle stretch which will help to decrease leg pain. Stretching the calf muscles involves placing your hands on a counter or against a wall and following the directions in the exercise above for step #1. While standing with one foot behind the other, you lean forwards for a count of 30,  leaning forwards to stretch the back leg. Repeat and switch sides as directed above. You can find a demonstration of this calf stretch as well as direction on how to accomplish a series of senior balance exercises designed by a qualified Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Leg Power And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Strong Legs

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comBalance exercises for stairs
Performing a combination of lower extremity strengthening exercises in conjunction with  senior balance exercises can help improve leg power and safe functional activities for older individuals. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Many activities of daily living require necessary leg power to perform safely. Examples of daily routines that are needed for safe and independent living include:
-Getting up from a chair
-Going up and down stairs
-Climbing in and out of a bathtub
-Getting up from a bed
-Walking up an incline
One normal aspect of aging, is a decline in muscle strength and the power that muscles can produce. As a result, for aging individuals daily activities can become not only more difficult to perform but also more likely to lead to a fall and an injury from a fall.  To complicate the matter more, as we grown in years, we also experience a decline in balance abilities. The combination of weaker leg muscles and reduced balance skills, promotes a higher incidence of falling among senior citizens. Consequently, medical professionals such as doctors, nurses and physical therapists recommend that older individuals practice both lower extremity strengthening exercises and senior balance exercises.

Senior Balance Exercises And Leg Strengthening Exercises

By combining lower extremity strengthening exercises with  senior balance exercises, you will reach a synergistic effect of being able to produce greater power with your muscles and increase your steadiness for daily routines. One example of an equilibrium routine that includes leg strengthening and balance training involves standing on one foot and stepping forward with the other foot. This stability routine includes both static and dynamic balance training as well as leg strengthening. You can learn these power producing exercises as well as a series of senior balance exercises by following along in the comfort of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Observation Of Gait And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Help With Walking Problems

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comWalking- Exercise for balance for walking
Those older folks who have problems with walking can find improvement with stability by following a daily regime of senior balance exercises. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now One of the first steps to determining if an older individual suffers with disequilibrium is to observe their gait pattern. In the assessment of gait and posture, the examiner should observe the pattern of movement of the whole body when the patient walks. The various gait disorders can be differentiated by typical manifestations and physical signs into the following categories: hemiparetic, paraparetic,  sensory,  steppage,  petits pas, apraxic, pulsive or retropulsive, ataxic, waddling, dystonic, choreic, antalgic, vertiginous, and hysteric. By employing this classification, healthcare professionals may find it  helpful in localizing the responsible lesion or lesions and in finding the most likely etiology of the gait disorder. Additionally, by watching how those in the aging population ambulate, medical professionals like physical therapists can also determine which muscles are weak and which joints are stiff, that are leading to imbalance and the potential of a fall. At any rate, following observation of an older person's gait, initiation of senior balance exercises and specific strengthening exercises is essential.

Specific Senior Balance Exercises Assist With Gait Stability

Once an older individual's gait pattern has been observed, certain senior balance exercises and lower extremity strengthening exercises should be commenced. As an example, for those senior citizens who tend to drag or scuff their toes and are at risk for catching their toes and falling forwards, they can practice standing on one foot and swinging the other foot through as if they are taking a step. During this exercise, they can concentrate on keeping their toes up, to reduce the risk of catching their toes and subsequently falling. Additionally, for those older folks Who have weakness in their hip muscles or pain in the hip joints which leads to a limping or lurching gait, they can practice equilibrium routines where they control their weight shifting as they take each step during their gait pattern. These stability tips and specific senior balance exercises can be practiced on a daily basis by following along with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Active Older Men And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Active Gents

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.commed-brain-profile[1]
Medical researchers have found that older men who participate in a fitness program that includes strengthening exercises and senior balance exercises are mentally stronger,  healthier and happier. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Dr Hideaki Soya from the University of Tsukuba in Japan published a new study, Older men with best fitness perform better mentally, which showed that older men in the best physical condition performed better mentally than less fit men, in a study from Japan claiming to be the first to directly link brain activation with both mental and physical performance. In the past, medical researchers have determined that our physical fitness is reflected in our mental fitness, especially as we get older. As we age, we use different parts of our brain compared to how we functioned when younger. For example, when young, we mainly used the left side of our prefrontal cortex for mental tasks involving short term memory, understanding the meaning of words and the ability to recognize previously encountered events, objects, or people. When older, we tend to use the equivalent parts of our prefrontal cortex on the right side of the brain for these tasks. The  prefrontal cortexis located in the very front of the brain, just behind the forehead. It has roles in executive function, memory, intelligence, language and vision. With tasks involving the temporary storage and manipulation of memory, long term memories and inhibitory control, young adults favor the right side of the prefrontal cortex, while older adults engage both the right and left prefrontal cortex. With aging, we tend to use both sides of the prefrontal cortex during mental tasks, rather than just one. This phenomenon has been coined HAROLD (hemispheric asymmetry reduction in older adults) and reflects the reorganization of the brain as compensation for reduced brain capacity and efficiency due to age-related structural and physiological decline.  Researchers performed tests to demonstrate that higher aerobic fitness is associated with higher left-prefrontal cortex activity. In other words, fitter men tend to use the more youth-like side of their brains, at least while performing the Stroop test (color-word matching). For older individuals, men and women alike, being physically active starts with rehearsing certain senior balance exercises to establish a baseline of needed stability.

Senior Balance Exercises For Safe Fitness Programs

to embark on a safe fitness program that leads to better overall physical and mental health, medical professionals recommend starting with performing basic senior balance exercises. Daily performance of equilibrium routines will enhance your steadiness and allow you to safely participate in other physical activities. Vibration Benefits And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Vibration Platform

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Vibration platforms are becoming popular for older adults to workout on to build bone and muscle strength, and starting with  senior balance exercises will help to maximize your fitness program. Please see     http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Recently, a research article, Risks and benefits of whole body vibration training in older people, was published in the Oxford Journals. Exercising on a vibration platform involves standing on a platform that vibrates at a high frequency over a small amplitude. The article explained that training on a vibration platform has many benefits including:
-improvements in bone health
-neuromuscular function
- increases in femoral neck bone mineral density
- improved muscle torque and power
- whole body vibration training also improved measures of mobility, gait and balance that have previously been related to fall risk
Overall, the researchers found that neuromuscular benefits of vibration training were significantly greater than those of resistance exercise. before starting vibration training, however, it is a good idea to perform certain senior balance exercises to enhance your steadiness while on the vibration platform.

Senior Balance Exercises For Improved Stability

Before embarking on an fitness program on a vibrational platform, you can start senior balance exercises to advance your balance abilities. As an example, you can begin with an equilibrium routine where you center your body weight in the middle of your feet and focus on keeping that body weight centered while standing. this standing balance technique will establish strong balance reactions at your feet and ankles. Additionally, this standing balance routine will develop a strong connection between the sensory input in your feet and the balance center in your brain. With this balance strategy, you will be prepared to start a beneficial fitness program on a vibration platform which will further develop your balance skills, leg strength and bone density. You can learn how to do this balance strategy and other senior balance exercises by following along with the instruction of a qualified Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.
