Balance Exercises For Diabetics
By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comDiabetes is a common illness for folks in America, resulting in changes including Diabetic Neuropathy, a sedentary lifestyle, immobility and the need to practice balance exercises. Please see more information at http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now medical researchers have found breakthrough treatments which can help folks with Diabetes. To be specific, patients with difficult cases of type 1 diabetes were helped by transplants of insulin-producing islet cells. The experimental therapy helped to prevent dangerous drops in blood sugar levels. People with diabetes have trouble managing and using blood glucose, a sugar that serves as fuel for the body. When blood glucose levels rise, islet cells in the pancreas normally make and secrete hormones such as insulin. Insulin triggers cells to take up sugar from the blood. In type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks and destroys these insulin-producing cells. People with type 1 diabetes must regularly measure their blood glucose and use insulin injections to maintain their blood sugar levels. When blood sugar levels drop too low (hypoglycemia), symptoms like shaking or sweating usually warn people to eat or drink to raise their blood sugar levels. However, many people with type 1 diabetes can’t tell when their blood sugar is too low. This raises their risk for severe hypoglycemia, which can cause seizures, loss of consciousness, and death. One strategy to treat type 1 diabetes is to transplant pancreatic islets from deceased human donors. To test this experimental procedure, National Institute of Health-funded researchers studied 48 people with hard-to-treat type 1 diabetes. Participants received at least one transplant of pancreatic islets. During the first year after treatment, 88% of participants were free of severe hypoglycemic events, had near-normal control of blood glucose levels, and were able to tell when their blood sugar was low. After 2 years, 71% still had these positive effects. Some people had side effects. Researchers are still monitoring the patients to assess the benefits and risks of this therapy. In the meantime, most Diabetic patients struggle with the complications of the disease that go beyond hypoglycemia. As an example, due to the changes in blood sugar, many diabetics experience neuropathy. Neuropathy involves causing pain and numbness in the lower legs. Having the lower legs numb also effects balance and mobility since the balance system in the body uses vision, inner ear vestibular feedback and sensory input from the feet to maintain a steady gait.
Balance Exercises For Neuropathy
Practicing balance exercises are critically important for those individuals who suffer with diabetic neuropathy. Since the brain uses three main sensory inputs to help with stability, we need to practice balance exercises every day especially when we suffer with diabetic neuropathy that changes the sense of touch from our feet. One such equilibrium routine that you can practice in the comfort and convenience of your own home involves standing with your feet shoulder width apart. In this position, you can imagine a line going through your body and centering in the middle of your feet. By concentrating on centering your body in the middle of your feet you will enhance your body sensory input leading back to the balance center in the brain. Centering your body weight will help enhance your overall steadiness with all movement activities. You can learn how to use this stability technique as well as learn other balance exercises by following the instructions of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.
