Walking And Fall Risk
By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com Balance exercises have been shown by medical researchers to help reduce falling in the elderly. Recently, researchers wanted to take a look at how balance abilities, walking speeds and rates of falling are correlated. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Quach L, Galica AM, in their paper, The nonlinear relationship between gait speed and falls, investigated falling and walking speeds for those who walk indoors or outdoors. Their results showed that participants with faster or slower walking speeds were at a greater risk for falling than those who walked at a normal speed. Additionally, slower gait speeds were associated with greater risk of indoor falls, and faster gait speed were associated with greater risk of outdoor falls. They concluded that there is a greater risk of outdoor falls in fast walkers and a greater risk of indoor falls in slow walkers. Thankfully, balance exercises can help improve balance abilities and decrease the risk of falling for both indoor and outdoor walkers.
