Doing Balance Exercises In High Heels??
By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via
www.exerciseforbalance.com Balance exercises are usually performed while wearing flat shoes or some people even prefer to practice stability exercises in bare feet to maximize their sensory input from their feet and the surface of the floor. Please see

balance exercises while wearing high heels. Apparently, in a few dance studios and gyms in Beverly Hills, New York and Denver, "Heel Hop" workouts are in full swing. The classes target women who want to improve their balance and reduce the risk of falling and injuring themselves while wearing high heels to the office or clubs. Researchers have shown that wearing high heels leads to alterations in muscle-tendon architecture, resulting in fatigue, strain, plantar fasciitis and possible ankle sprains. Additionally, in high heel shoes, a person's center body weight is thrown forward, which diminishes balance abilities and increases the risk for falling.
Balance Exercises In High Heels
Performing balance exercises in high heels is part of the "Stiletto Strength" classes offered by the Crunch Fitness gyms. The instructors purport that the class helps to strengthen the leg, back and abdominal muscles that are needed when wearing high heels. At the other end of the spectrum, Podiatrist Emily Splichal developed a program, "Catwalk Confidence," to help women walk in heels. She believes that you can build a lot of awareness and agility without being in heels and that wearing heels while working out is probably the worst thing you can do. As a Physical Therapist, I agree with Dr Spichal. You can learn specific balance techniques and practice balance exercises to improve your balance and ankle strength and then transfer those principles and balance abilities to high heel footwear if that is your desire. Now, before you strap on those six inch heels, you can practice a balance exercise routine in the comfort of your own home with the
