Overload Principle For Senior Balance Exercises

Advance Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
The Overload Principle is  applicable to strength training as well as to senior balance exercises to see an improvement in what you are working on. Please see more information at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now The overload principle is a relevant concept that comes from the field of exercise physiology. Progressive overload means that during an exercise program you are providing a challenge overload to the body through progressing the intensity level of the exercise as well as the frequency of the exercise. The overload principle helps us to build stronger muscles that will provide greater force production for activities of daily living and safe movement patterns. In addition, we can use the overload principal to enhance balance while working on stability exercises. As an example we can provide the body a stimulus that increases resistance for building muscles or that progresses the challenge to our balance system. Once our body senses A progression of challenge to the system it will respond by developing stronger muscles, better endurance or improved balance responses.  Part of the process involves providing a challenge greater in regards to balance or strength so that the body has to feel that it needs to respond to the challenge. The exercise needs to be moderately challenging but not too challenging so that the person is successful with completing the task. On the other hand, if the exercise is too challenging, it will lead the person to frustration and ineffectiveness in their exercise progression. The body can improve its overall steadiness by practicing senior balance exercises on a regular basis, which will help to minimize any potential for falling.

Senior Balance Exercise Progression

by progressing your  senior balance exercises using the overload principle of exercise physiology, you will be able to advance your stability abilities. One example of an equilibrium routine that you can progress at home involves standing near a sink or counter with your feet in a position where 1 foot is in front of the other foot as if you were taking a step. In this position, you will challenge your balance system to maintain an upright position. You can start this exercise by standing in this position for 20 seconds three times in a row and then switch your feet with the other foot in front and hold that position for 20 seconds three times in a row. You can apply the overload principle by progressing this exercise to perform a tandem stance routine. With tandem standing you want to stand near a sink or counter with 1 foot directly behind the other foot. As you stand with your feet touching heel to toe you will challenge the balance reactions at your feet and ankles. You can stand in this position for 20 seconds three times in a row and then switch your feet with the other foot in front and hold that position for 20 seconds three times in a row. You can learn how to perform tandem standing and other senior balance exercises by joining in with the demonstration by a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.

Do Genes Effect Balance?

Senior Balance Exercises For Better Stability

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Healthcare professionals and medical researchers are studying varying aspects of aging including gene therapy, fitness training and senior balance exercise programs to help older folks avoid falls and the injuries that occur with falling. Please see more information at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers have been looking into the influence of genes on issues of senior citizens including greater quality of life, longer lifespan and increased activity level including better balance and mobility. There is a common thought that you need good genes to live longer. In fact, genes are only part of the equation for most of us, says Dr. Thomas Perls, an aging expert and director of the New England Centenarian Study at the Boston University School of Medicine. “Research shows that genes account for less than one-third of your chances of surviving to age 85. The vast majority of variation in how old we live to be is due to our health behaviors,” Perls says. “Our genes could get most of us close to the remarkable age of 90 if we lead a healthy lifestyle.” The influence of genes is stronger, though, for people who live to older ages, such as beyond ninety-five years old. Perls has been studying people who live to age 100 and up (centenarians) and their families to learn more about the biological, psychological, and social factors that promote healthy aging.  “It seems there’s not a single gene that imparts a strong effect on the ability to get to these older ages,” Perls says. “Instead, it’s the combined effects of probably hundreds of genes, each with weak effects individually, but having the right combination can lead to a very strong effect, especially for living to the oldest ages we study.” “People used to say, ‘the older you get the sicker you get.’  But with common sense, healthy habits such as regular exercise, a healthy weight, avoiding red meat, not smoking, and managing stress, it can be ‘the older you get, the healthier you’ve been,’” Perls says. The key to healthy aging is to engage fully in life—mentally, physically, and socially.  “Transitioning to older years isn’t about sitting in a rocking chair and letting the days slip by,” Bernard says. “Older adults have unique experiences, intellectual capital, and emotional involvement that can be shared with younger generations. " In addition, those people in the aging population can stay mobile and active in later years by participating in fitness programs that include senior balance exercises.

Senior Balance Exercises For Improved Stability

Having a good genetic make up is an important key to enhance your overall health in later years, but partaking in a daily fitness program as well as rehearsing certain senior balance exercises will also help to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.  Daily equilibrium routines can be performed in the comfort and convenience of your own home which provides the opportunity to perform stability exercises as part of a regular fitness program. As an example, you can practice tandem stance routines. A tandem stance steadiness exercise involves standing with one foot directly behind the other foot along a line. In this narrow base of support you will challenge your balance reactions at your feet and ankles. As your balance reactions get faster and stronger you will secondarily improve your overall steadiness with all standing and walking activities. You can practice tandem standing routines as well as other senior balance exercises by following the instruction of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.

Standing Stability And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Prolonged Standing

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Having adequate stability while standing for long periods of time can be facilitated through practicing certain senior balance exercises as well as rehearsing specific steadiness techniques. Please see more at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Many times throughout the week, we find ourselves standing for a long period of time. Often times we have to standing in line at the airport security line,  grocery store or shopping for Christmas presents. Coming soon, many in the younger generation will be standing in line to see the new Star Wars movie. There are some specific stability techniques that can be employed to make your long term standing safer and easier to accomplish. To maximize safe standing, first of all, it is good to know the most important components of our balance system to be able to maximize our stability skills. The balance system is a very complex set of sensory inputs from three main components. The sensory inputs that enter the brain to help with our balance comes from our eyes (vision helps us see the environment we are moving in, like are we walking on carpet or thick grass), our inner ear vestibular system ( detects how we are moving, like are we turning in the bathroom, getting up from a chair or going down stairs) and the sense of touch between our feet and the floor (like is our weight shifted forwards in our toes and are we about to fall over). The sensory inputs are processed in the balance center in the brain. Once that information is processed, the brain sends a corresponding message to the muscles to appropriately contract in response to how our balance is doing. Unfortunately, as we age the sensory inputs are less exact, the brain processing takes more time and often the motor response in the muscles is weaker. For this reason, older individuals are at a greater risk for falling and hurting themselves. As a result, older adults or individuals with balance disorders are encouraged to practice senior balance exercises and stability techniques to enhance their overall steadiness and to minimize their risk for falling.

Standing Senior Balance Exercises

There are a few key senior balance exercises that can be practiced in the comfort of your own home, which will enhance your steadiness and help you with prolonged standing. One equilibrium routine for standing involves standing with your feet shoulder width apart and your body weight centered in the middle of your feet. In this position, you can practice controlling how your body weight shifts forwards and backwards and side to side. This stability technique enhances your overall steadiness as you highlight the connection between the sensory input coming from your feet and the balance center in your brain. You can advance your standing stability routines by performing single leg standing exercises. Single leg standing involves standing near a counter or sink, to hold on if necessary, on one leg. The target goal is to stand on one leg for twenty seconds, three times on each foot. You can learn how to rehearse these senior balance standing exercises and other equilibrium routines by joining in with the demonstration by a qualified Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Social Goals And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Social Outings

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Meeting your social goals can be a dream come true through practicing your senior balance exercises and improving your stability for every outing. Please see more information at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researcher's have found that older individuals who set specific goals for interacting with friends, family and the community live healthier and more satisfied lives. The research team that published a study pointing out that -Last years of life better for the socially active with social goals-  included scholars from Arizona State University, Cornell University, Pennsylvania State University and the University of British Columbia. The researchers found that being socially active and having social goals were associated with higher well-being late in life. Valuing and pursuing social goals may contribute to well-being by boosting feelings of competence, concern for the next generation and belonging, said Gerstorf.  Similarly, investing one’s remaining physical and psychological resources into socially oriented activities can be advantageous at a number of different levels: boosting well-being directly by carrying out joyful activities or indirectly by facilitating self-esteem and a sense of control or promoting physical and cognitive functioning. “A socially engaged lifestyle often involves cognitive stimulation and physical activity, which in turn may protect against the neurological and physical factors underlying cognitive decline,” said Gert Wagner from the German Institute for Economic Research, one of the co-authors. “Our results indicate that social orientation is related to maintaining well-being for as long as possible into the very last years of life.” In addition, medical researchers as well as healthcare professionals like doctors, nurses and physical therapists suggest that in later years older adults practice senior balance exercises to maintain their sense of steadiness during social activities.

Senior Balance Exercises For Social Meetings

Medical researchers recommend that aging adults set goals for social interactions as well as participate in  senior balance exercises to boost steadiness for all social interactions. to be specific, aging individuals can rehearse equilibrium routines like standing on one foot for twenty seconds, three repetitions on each side. You can learn how to perform single leg standing routines and other senior balance exercises by joining in with the instruction on the exercise for balance dvd.

Tendon Strains And Senior Balance Exercises

2 Senior Balance Exercises For Tendon Strains

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
As we age, tendon strains can become more common, creating a limping gait pattern, imbalance and the need to perform strengthening exercises and  senior balance exercises. Please see more information at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Probably the most familiar tendon issues that people have experienced or heard about are Achilles Tendinitis and Tennis Elbow. Medical research has learned a lot about tendon strains over the last few years. One major enlightenment is that tendon strains that are true "tendonitis" are a result of a trauma where the inflammatory response lasts one to two days. Most of us experience what is now called TENDINOPATHY. Tendinopathy occurs secondary to a failed healing response that includes:
- degeneration of tendon tissue
-increased cellular formation in a very disorganized way
-micro tearing within the tendon tissue
-decreased ability to resist forces
-new blood vessel formation in the tissue that is very painful
Usually tendinopathies are more common as we age and as we overload the tissues due to  repetitive stress, being over weight, being weak in opposing muscles or having decreased flexibility of the muscle.  There are several tendons in the lower extremities that when they are injured cause pain, weakness, stiffness, altered walking patterns, imbalance. Those common tendon issues can occur at the hip (Iliopsoas, Gluteus Medius or Gluteus Maximus or Hamstring), Patella Tendon (below the knee), and Achilles Tendon. when older individuals have a tendon strain and resulting pain with walking, they compensate with a limping gait which throws their balance off and puts them at a greater risk for falling. As a result, medical professionals like doctors, physician assistants and physical therapists recommend that aging individuals with tendon strains perform certain strengthening exercises as well as senior balance exercises.

Senior Balance Exercises For Tendon Pain

For older folks who have been diagnosed with a tendon strain in their lower extremity, practicing specific strengthening routines and senior balance exercises will be significantly helpful. One leg strengthening routine involves raising up on your toes and then slowly lowering your heel back to the ground. You can progress this eccentric strengthening routine by raising up on both sets of toes and then lowering down on just one foot. It is best to repeat that calf strengthening exercise 15-20 times 2-3 times a day. In addition, you can rehearse a single leg standing routine to develop necessary stability with all the activities that you do standing on your feet. The single leg standing routines involves standing near a counter, table, sink or other solid object (to hold on if you need to) and standing on just one foot. You can stand on one foot for twenty seconds, repeating that three times in a row. Proceed by standing on the other foot for twenty seconds, three times in a row. By performing eccentric strengthening exercises and standing equilibrium routines, you will develop strong leg muscles and better steadiness that will help decrease the wear and tear on your leg tendons, improving your pain level, stability and quality of life. You can learn how to correctly perform these strengthening and senior balance exercises by joining in with the demonstration in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Strength Training And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Combining strength training and senior balance exercises  is a great way to maximize safe mobility and health living. Please see more information at http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now A recent report published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, said that seniors involved in a study saw lasting changes from weight-lifting twice a week for 6 months. In particular, the study looked at the correlation between weight lifting and improvements in memory. As a result, enhancing muscle strength may boost brain function in people with mild memory and thinking problems. The research included 100 people aged 55 to 86. All had mild memory and thinking problems (mild cognitive impairment). The study volunteers who did weight training twice a week for six months to at least 80 percent of their maximum strength showed significant improvements in mental function. The benefits lasted for at least a year after their supervised weight-lifting sessions ended, the study showed. "What we found in this follow-up study is that the improvement in cognition [mental] function was related to their muscle strength gains," said study lead author Yorgi Mavros, of the faculty of health sciences at the University of Sydney, Australia. "The stronger people became, the greater the benefit for their brain," Mavros added in a university news release. The findings could help guide the type and intensity of exercise recommended for aging adults, the researchers said. "The more we can get people doing resistance training like weight lifting, the more likely we are to have a healthier aging population," Mavros said. "The key, however, is to make sure you are doing it frequently, at least twice a week, and at a high intensity so that you are maximizing your strength gains. This will give you the maximum benefit for your brain," Mavros explained. In addition, medical researchers as well as healthcare professionals like doctors and physical therapists recommend that older individuals practice certain stability techniques and senior balance exercises as a part of their fitness program to improve their steadiness and limit the possibility of a fall while working out.

Senior Balance Exercises For Muscle Building

To safely participate in resistance training, healthcare providers suggest that you include senior balance exercises with your fitness program. As an example, in order to have good stability while doing a standing bicep curl exercise with barbell weights, you can rehearse standing with your feet shoulder width apart and centering your body weight in the middle of your feet. In this position, concentrate on the sense of touch between your feet and the floor, which will enhance the sensory input back to the balance center in your brain. as you lift the barbell up and down, try to focus on keeping your body weight centered in your feet. have a single focus for your body weight will advance your overall steadiness. You can learn how to perform specific senior balance exercises that will keep you steady on your feet while you do resistance training by following along with the instructions of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

2 Advanced Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Active Adultsbalance exercises for tennis

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Staying active is important to older adults and can be facilitated by practicing senior balance exercises. Please see more information at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  For the athletic and already active aging individuals who want to take their balance abilities to the next step, there are quite a few equilibrium routines that you can perform at home. Here are just two such examples:
SINGLE LEG SQUAT
Once you have gained a basic level of stability skills, you can start advanced balance exercises. One example of an advanced equilibrium routine is trying the single leg stance with a squat.  To do this, stand on one foot with your other foot off the ground and directly in front of you with your knee straight.  Slowly bend the knee of your stance leg and squat down a few inches. Make sure your knee goes directly over your toes and does not turn in or out as you squat.  After squatting a few inches, return up to the starting position. Repeat the single leg squat for 10 to 15 repetitions, and then move on to the next exercise: the single leg T-stance.
SINGLE LEG T-STANCE EXERCISE
You can also boost your steadiness abilities by performing the Single Leg T-Stance Exercise. To perform the single leg T-stance exercise, stand on one foot.  Extend both arms out to the side, and then extend your other leg out behind you - make sure you keep your back straight and your pelvis level. Hold the T-stance position for 30 seconds, and then return to the standing position.  You can challenge yourself further by rotating your torso left and right while maintaining the T-stance position.
You would benefit the most by performing these equilibrium routines and other senior balance exercises on a consistent basis.

Harder Senior Balance Exercises

Practicing senior balance exercises every day will help you develop necessary stability skills to stay active and healthy for your later years in life. One of the essential components of rehearsing equilibrium routines involves performing your exercises on a regular basis. If you haphazardly do your stability routines every once in a while, you will not actually develop the necessary strength and speed of your balance reactions at your feet and ankles. As a result, it is imperative to perform your steadiness routines on a consistent basis to develop the necessary leg strength, and ankle flexibility, balance reaction speed and integration of the balance system between the brain and the body. You can easily rehearse your senior balance exercises on a daily basis in the comfort of your own home by following along with the directions of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.
