Preventing Injuries With Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises To Prevent Injuries

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Fall prevention and injury prevention is one key to healthy living for older individuals and performing  senior balance exercises every day can be a large part of that success. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now According to Karin A. Mack, et al, injuries continue to be the leading cause of death for the first four decades of life. Following motor vehicles, the home is the second most common location for fatal injuries in the United States. The burden and costs of injuries at home are substantial. There are approximately 30,000 unintentional injury–related deaths at home each year , and there are an average of 21 million medical visits made each year because of home injuries. Leading causes of unintentional home injury deaths include falls, poisonings, and fire/burns. Together, these comprise 86% of all unintentional home injury deaths. Home injuries due to falling can be reduced through participating in  a regular series of senior balance exercises.

Senior Balance Exercises For Fall Prevention In The Home

A daily dose of senior balance exercises can help minimize the risk of falling in the home. Common causes of falling in the home include tripping on clutter on the floor or catching a toe on a rug or cord. Additionally, wearing slippers or other unsupportive footwear can lead to loss of balance and falls. To reduce the incidence of falling in the home, you can rehearse equilibrium routines like standing on one foot and stepping forwards, backwards or to the side with the other foot. This stability exercise helps you develop excellent steadiness to statically stand on one foot while you dynamically move the other foot. Combining static and dynamic balance is a requirement for walking, stair climbing any many other movement patterns. You can learn necessary senior balance exercises and stability tips by following the direction of a qualified Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Knee Discomfort And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Ongoing Knee Pain

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Knee pain can alter the way we walk and the balance we move with, resulting in a need to practice certain senior balance exercises to avoid falling. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Healthcare workers understand that knee pain due to osteoarthritis can mushroom into other issues like poor balance and falling. Osteoarthritis of knee has been reported as a risk factor for falls and reduced balance in the elderly. Recent medical research has  evaluated the effectiveness of physical therapies, including stability exercises, in improving balance and reducing falls risk among patients with knee osteoarthritis. In general, researchers found that strength training, balance training and aerobics exercises improved balance and falls risk in older individuals with knee osteoarthritis. Fortunately, there are some practical ways to perform senior balance exercises to improve steadiness with all movement activities.

Senior Balance Exercises For Those With Knee Pain

Statistics reveal that Osteoarthritis  is the most prevalent type of arthritis among older people worldwide, that results in imbalance and limited mobility, requiring a need for rehearsing senior balance exercises every day. Individuals who suffer with knee pain due to osteoarthritis can be benefited by a program that includes both leg strengthening exercises and senior balance exercises. An example of leg strengthening exercises includes performing mini squats. You can combine stability exercises by practicing the squats near a sink or table but trying not to hold on so that your balance is cahallenged. You can progress your equilibrium routines by transitioning to standing on one foot and holding that position for about twenty seconds. You can learn these strengthening exercises and senior balance exercises by joining in with the program directed by a qualified Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Eye Injuries And Senior Balance Exercises

Avoid Eye Injuries With Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Falling can lead to eye injuries for older adults and practicing  senior balance exercises is good medicine to limit the potential of a fall. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Falls can occur frequently for those in the aging population, resulting in fractures of the hip, wrist and head as well as eye injuries. Falling  tops the list of major causes of eye injuries resulting in hospitalization over a 10-year period, says a new study. Falling was the leading cause, usually involved seniors age 60 or older, which were the most costly to treat. The study presented at the recent Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, details that falling was the No. 1 cause of eye injuries overall and accounted for more than 8,425 hospitalizations. Researchers also found that the cost to treat eye injuries at hospitals rose by 62 percent during that period and now exceeds $20,000 per injury. Serious ocular trauma injuries include orbital fractures and being pierced by objects. These injuries can be expensive to treat, and in many cases are preventable. With that in mind medical researchers as well as healthcare providers like doctors, nurses and physical therapists recommend that senior citizens perform certain senior balance exercises on a daily basis to enhance their stability and reduce the possibility of falling and sustaining an eye injury.

Senior Balance Exercises For Preventing Falls

To minimize the risk of falling and causing an eye injury, aging adults should release   senior balance exercises every day. An appropriate example of a functional steadiness activity involves walking down a hallway and turning your head side to side, as if you are looking for items in a grocery store. You can learn how to perform other functional stability routines as well as a full series of senior balance exercises by following along with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Arthritis Help And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Help Arthritis

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
A majority of aging individuals suffer with arthritis, but medical researchers have recently shown that participating in fitness programs including senior balance exercises can help those with arthritis pain and stiffness. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Although it may seem counterintuitive that exercise could help people with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions,  a new study being presented finds that a low-impact exercise program is improving quality of life for many older adults with these conditions. The program, offered by Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in senior centers in New York City's Chinatown and Flushing, Queens communities, has helped decrease pain, improve mobility and enhance the overall health of many participants. "Getting seniors to be active in any way will generally improve their quality of life and help them function better in their everyday activities," said Linda Russell, MD, a rheumatologist and chair of the Public and Patient Education Advisory Committee at Hospital for Special Surgery. "People believe that if you have arthritis you shouldn't exercise, but appropriate exercises actually help decrease pain." Fifty percent of adults age 65 and older have received a diagnosis of arthritis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Previous studies have shown that participation in low-impact physical activity can improve pain, function, mood and quality of life without worsening arthritis symptoms or disease severity. However, individuals with arthritis are less likely to be physically active. Between September 2011 and July 2015, 370 individuals took part in an 8 week low impact exercise program. In terms of mobility and function, after completing the program:

  • 88% more participants could climb several flights of stairs
  • 66% more participants could lift/carry groceries
  • 63% more participants could bend, kneel, or stoop
  • 91% of participants felt the program reduced their fatigue
  • 97% of participants felt that the program reduced their stiffness
  • 95% of participants felt their balance improved
  • 96% of participants felt more confident that exercising would not make their symptoms worse
Researchers also suggest that older adults precede a fitness program with a series of senior balance exercises to first develop adequate stability for the physical fitness.

Senior Balance Exercises To Reduce Arthritis Pain

Starting with senior balance exercises to enhance steadiness is ideal before commencing a fitness program for individuals with arthritis. Practicing equilibrium routines advances balance abilities as well as helps to build leg and core muscle strength, which is beneficial for those with arthritis. Memory Advances And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Cognitive Function

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Over and over, medical researchers have shown that physical fitness, starting with senior balance exercises, can benefit cognitive function. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now A new study published in the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society declares that older adults who take more steps than most by walking or jogging performed better on memory tasks. In short,  exercise equals better mental performance as people age. This recent study  looked at groups of both young and old adults as well as looking at long-term versus short-term memory. The study included 29 young adults (ages 18-31) and 31 older adults (ages 55-82) who wore a small device called an ActiGraph, which recorded information including how many steps each took, how vigorous the steps were and how much time it involved. Participants also completed neuropsychological testing to assess their memory, planning and problem-solving abilities. In addition to standardized neuropsychological tasks of executive function (planning and organization abilities) and long-term memory, participants engaged in a laboratory task in which they had to learn face-name associations. The researchers found that older adults who took more steps per day had better memory performance. In addition, what will appeal to many elderly, the association between the number of steps taken was strongest with a task that required recalling which name went with a person's face - the same type of everyday task that older adults often have difficulty with. The researchers as well as medical professionals like doctors, nurses and physical therapists suggest that before beginning a fitness program, aging individuals should practice senior balance exercises to enhance their stability.

Senior Balance Exercises For Fitness Programs

To maximize the benefits of a fitness program, it is best to start with senior balance exercises to establish quality steadiness. You can begin with a simple equilibrium routine of standing on one foot to develop balance reactions in your feet and ankles. You can progress to dynamic stability routines like walking along a line down a hallway. You can find these senior balance exercises and additional routines by following along with the Exercise For Balance DVD in the comfort of your home.

Fracture Risk And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises To Reduce Fractures

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Falling and sustaining a fracture is a real concern among older individuals and performing certain  senior balance exercises can help improve stability and reduce the risk of falling. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers have shown that osteoporotic fractures occur in about 0.5% of the population per annum in countries such as the United States, European countries and Australia. Most of the fractures occur in older age and result in a significant increase in morbidity and impairment of quality of life in this elderly population. Residents of aged-care facilities contribute to a significant proportion of the problem. In the Auckland Hip Fracture Study, 42% of hip fracture patients aged 60 years or older are residents in these facilities. Bone fragility, as measured by bone mineral density (BMD) or quantitative ultrasound (QUS), has been shown to predict fractures among the community dwelling elderly. Factors such as older age, female gender, fracture after 50 years of age, maternal hip fracture, neuromuscular, cognitive and visual impairments, low weight, imbalance and current smoking also contribute to the risk of fracture. Healthcare professionals like doctors, nurses and physical therapists understand that the risk of falling and incurring a fracture can be minimized in the aging population by practicing senior balance exercises on a  regular basis.

Senior Balance Exercises For Preventing Fractures

To decrease the possibility of a fall resulting in a fracture of the hip, wrist, shoulder, head or other body part, medical providers suggest that aging individuals perform a routine of senior balance exercises every day. One example of an appropriate equilibrium routine involves standing near a sink or counter with one foot directly behind the other foot in a tandem stance. This position challenges the balance reactions in the ankles and secondarily enhances overall stability for a senior citizen. This tandem stance should be held for about twenty seconds for three repetitions. You can find this senior balance exercises as well as other steadiness routines in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Proprioception Cues And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Sensory Feedback

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Having a strong sense of touch is imperative for fall prevention in the aging population and performing senior balance exercises can help enhance sensory feedback from the feet. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Our balance abilities are based on three primary components: vision, the inner ear vestibular system and sensory feedback called proprioception. Proprioception, the sense of where one is in space, is essential for effective interaction with the environment. A lack of or reduction in proprioceptive acuity has been directly correlated with falls and with reduced functional independence in older people. Proprioceptive losses have also been shown to negatively correlate with functional recovery post stroke  and play a significant role in other conditions such as Parkinson's disease. However, despite its central importance to many geriatric syndromes, the clinical assessment of proprioception has remained remarkably static. We look at approaches to the clinical assessment of proprioception, changes in proprioception across the life course, functional implications of proprioception in health and disease and the potential for targeted interventions in the future such as joint taping, and proprioception-specific rehabilitation and footwear. Additionally, proprioception can be enhanced by practicing certain senior balance exercises and stability strategies.

Senior Balance Exercises For Optimal Stability

Several senior balance exercises can optimize proprioceptive input for better steadiness with all movement activities. As an example, you can perform an equilibrium routine where you stand with your feet shoulder apart. In this position, you can shift your body weight forwards and backwards, while concentrating on the sense of touch between your feet and the floor. This stability routine will help to maximize your proprioceptive input to the balance center in your brain, thereby improving your overall steadiness. You can learn these stability techniques and senior balance exercises by following along with the direction of a qualified Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.
