Treat Head Injuries And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For After A Head Injury

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
One common injury from a fall is a blow to the head, which can lead to a concussion and can be avoided by practicing  senior balance exercises on a regular basis to minimize the potential of a fall in the first place. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Unfortunately, falling is a common occurrence among senior citizens. Medical researchers estimate that one in three older individuals fall every year. Many times a fall can lead to a hip fracture or a head injury. Medical professionals  can evaluate an elderly individual who has experienced a concussion with certain tests including:
•    Ask questions about the fall and injury.
•    Test ability to pay attention
•    Assess learning and memory.
•    Check strength, balance, coordination, reflexes, and sensation.
Sometimes a doctor will order imaging tests such as a CT scan or an MRI to make sure the person’s brain is not bruised or bleeding.
What Is The Prognosis For A Head Injury?
Following a head injury, some elders feel normal again in a few hours. Others can have symptoms for weeks or months. Recovering from a concussion is different for each person. It depends on many things, such as:
•    How severe the head injury was.
•    What part of the brain was injured.
•    The person’s age.
•    How healthy the person was before the head injury.
•    How long it took you to get the right medical treatment.
Healing takes time. Elders in good health tend to get better faster than less healthy people. Those with medical conditions or other problems that come with aging may take longer to get well. during the recovery phase,  it is very important to allow the person time to get better and to slowly return to their regular activities. If symptoms return when doing an activity, stop and rest for a day. This is a sign that the person is pushing themselves too hard. It is also important to call the doctor if the person is not improving as expected or getting worse. Additionally, getting plenty of rest is essential for healing. Rest helps the brain to heal. Get plenty of sleep at night, and take it easy during the day. With rest, most people fully recover from a concussion. It’s also important to:
•    Avoid activities that are physically or mentally demanding.
•    Make sure to avoid any activities that might increase the risk of falling and injury again. Repeated concussions or a severe concussion may lead to long-lasting problems with movement, learning, or speaking. Furthermore, performing senior balance exercises every day will help to enhance stability and limit the potential of a fall.

Senior Balance Exercises For Preventing Falls

Specific senior balance exercises can be rehearsed every day to develop adequate steadiness with various movement activities. One example of a popular equilibrium routine involves standing on one foot ( near a counter or a table) for about twenty seconds. This single leg standing exercise and other senior balance exercises can be performed in the comfort of your own home by following the direction of a qualified Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Other national parks included Rocky Mountain Park in Colorado, Glacier Park in Montana and Yosemite in California. In August of 1916, Congress passed an act and President Woodrow Wilson signed it to create the National Park Service. Since that time, the National Park Service has grown to more than 400 protected areas. Enjoying national parks can be very beneficial from learning about various wildlife, vegetation, fauna, flora and geology to boosting cardiovascular fitness on a vigorous walk to experiencing mental relaxation as you partake in the bounty of nature's beauty. Mallet Toe And Balance Exercises

 Balance Exercises For Painful Toes

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Mallet toe can be a painful condition that leads to poor balance and a need to practice certain balance exercises. Please see more at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Mallet toe is a common diagnosis that often coincides with hammertoe.  Mallet toe and hammertoe are two foot deformities that occur most often in women who wear high heels or shoes with a narrow toe box. These types of footwear may force your toes against the front of the shoe, causing an unnatural bending. A hammertoe has an abnormal bend in the middle joint of a toe. Mallet toe creates a deformity that affects the joint nearest the toenail. Hammertoe and mallet toe are most likely to occur in the long toe next to your big toe. In general, hammertoe and mallet toe result in an abnormal bend in the joints of one or more of your toes. Moving the affected toe may be difficult or painful. Corns and calluses can result from the toe rubbing against the inside of your shoes. Relieving the pain and pressure of hammertoe and mallet toe may involve changing your footwear and wearing shoe inserts. If you have a more severe case of hammertoe or mallet toe, you may need surgery to experience relief. Furthermore, having stiff and painful toes creates a secondary issue of imbalance, which requires practicing specific balance exercises to minimize the chance of falling.

Balance Exercises For Stiff And Sore Toes

rehearsing  balance exercises is critical for individuals who suffer with stiff and sore feet. Our balance abilities rely heavily on both sensory feedback and flexibility of the structures in the feet. The balance center in our brain processes sensory input from the joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons and positions of the bones in our feet to determine how to balance on various surfaces like thick carpet, hardwood floors, grass and hiking trails. That sensory input is altered in folks who suffer with hammertoe or mallet toe. As a result, medical professionals like doctors and physical therapists recommend that individuals with stiff and painful joints in the feet perform equilibrium routines to help develop adequate steadiness with all movement activities. You can learn which balance exercises to rehearse by following along with the instruction from a knowledgeable physical therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Plumb Line And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For A Straight Posture

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Having a good, upright posture can make a world of difference and can be facilitated through certain senior balance exercises. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now As we age, many senior citizens succumb to poor posture. Faulty postural alignment can appear as a forward head and forward trunk position. Faulty postural alignment can result in a number of orthopedic issues including but not limited to muscle imbalance, back pain, arthritis at the knees, hips and spine and imbalance. Medical professionals such as physical therapists use a plumb line technique to gauge whether an individual's posture shows slight, moderate or marked deviations from optimal upright alignment. A plumb line test can involve having a person stand in front of a grid with a vertical reference line. Once the person's alignment has been measured (usually in centimeter deviations from the line at the lateral ankle, lumbar spine, thoracic spine, point of the shoulder and middle of the ear), then the therapist can determine how to correct the posture and how to implement specific stretching and strengthening exercises to maintain proper posture.

Senior Balance Exercises For Proper Posture

Since having a faulty postural alignment can lead to Pain, muscle  weakness and imbalance, older adults are encouraged to practice senior balance exercises as part of their postural exercises. Once simple equilibrium routine that facilitates good posture involves standing with your feet shoulder width a part and centering your body weight in the middle of your feet. In this position, you will not only adopt a good postural alignment but you will also enhance the sensory input from your feet to the balance center in your brain, maximizing your overall steadiness. You can practice this senior balance exercise and other strengthening and stability routines by following along with the exercise for balance dvD.

Postural Deficits And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Improved Alignment

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Being stable with movement activities can involve having adequate core and leg strength, maintaining a proper upright posture and performing senior balance exercises  on a regular basis. Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical professionals such as doctors, nurses and physical therapists see a trend in strength, balance and posture as people age. In regards to postural alignment, those in the aging population often succumb to a forward bent posture with the head, neck and upper back as time progresses. As a result, postural dysfunction can emerge and can be a result of primary impairments associated with muscle imbalances. For example, in later years, older individuals tend to have tight muscles (Pectoralis muscles) on the front of their shoulders and chest region. At the same time, those in the aging population tend to have weak upper back muscles (Rhomboids, Trapezius, Paraspinal muscles). Habitual poor posture can be a result of this muscle imbalance and can contribute to secondary conditions including imbalance and age-related decline in mobility. To combat this typical decline in forward bent positioning, muscle imbalance and decreased stability, healthcare professionals recommend a daily dose of postural strengthening exercises as well as senior balance exercises.

Senior Balance Exercises For Proper Alignment

maintaining an upright posture and performing senior balance exercises every day can enhance your stability with all movement patterns. You can easily practice a combination of postural alignment exercises and equilibrium routines by standing with your feet shoulder width a part, shoulders back, head back over your shoulders and weight centered in the middle of your feet. In this upright position, slowly shift your bodyweight forwards into your toes and then backwards into your heels. As you perform this routine, you will develop strong balance reactions at your ankles as you establish improved muscle length and strength in your neck and upper back muscles. You can learn how to rehears this stability strategy and other senior balance exercises by following along with the instruction in the Exercise For Balance DVD.
