Help With Daily Routines and Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Help With Activities Of Daily Living

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comJohn & Ann Betar, 101 & 97 yrs, married 80
For older adults, very day activities can be made more safe by practicing senior balance exercises  on a regular basis. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Healthcare providers have found that nearly half of Americans age 65 and older, totaling about 18 million people, require help with routine daily activities like grocery shopping, cleaning house, bathing, handling medications, meals and more. A new study in Milbank Quarterly reveals a growing need for improved services and support for older Americans, their spouses, their children and other "informal caregivers." While 51 percent of older Americans in the study reported no difficulty with routine tasks, "29 percent reported receiving help with taking care of themselves or getting around in the previous month," said co-author Vicki A. Freedman, Ph.D., a research professor with the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. "Another 20 percent reported that they had difficulty carrying out these activities on their own." Furthermore, models that effectively coordinate health and supportive services will become even more important as a rising number of older Americans with disabilities receive care in settings other than nursing homes. On another note, those in the aging population who struggle with imbalance and mobility restrictions have an even greater difficulty with being independent with their daily routines. As a result, healthcare professionals like doctors, nurses, physical therapists and occupational therapists recommend that older indicviduals rehearse senior balance exercises every day to improve their balance abilities, which will in turn result in better function with daily  routines.

Senior Balance Exercises Enhance Steadiness For Living Routines

Each and every day, we all perform basic routines like dressing and  bathing that can be made safer with a regular dose of senior balance exercises. As an example, having good stability is essential to turn safely in the kitchen or bathroom during food preparation or bathing. Also, steadiness is required to be able to safely carry a cup of coffee or tea from the kitchen counter to the kitchen table. Medical researchers, however, have shown that despite an age related decline in balance abilities, senior citizens are able to improve overall steadiness with movement activities by rehearsing specific equilibrium routines on a daily basis. Now, you can practice a step by step program of senior balance exercises developed by a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the comfort of your own home by following along with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Do Senior Balance Exercises Help People With Hip Problems?

Senior Balance Exercises For Those With Leg Disabilities

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
As we age, we face problems with leg weakness, decreased sensation in the legs, circulatory problems and imbalance, which can be aided by rehearsing senior balance exercises on a regular basis. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Stability exercises in general are essential to practice on a daily basis for older adults. Are balance exercises, however, even more important and beneficial for aging adults who suffer with lower extremity conditions such as hip osteoarthritis, hip muscle weakness and hip instability? It is well known that steadiness exercises and balance training enhance balance reactions that help to deter falling and injuries incurred from a fall. Now, the question is do balance exercises specifically assist folks with stiff or unstable hips, secondary to disease processes like rheumatoid arthritis or overuse situations like osteoarthritis? Many times there are concurrent orthopedic conditions like back pain, lumbar spine disc herniations, Sacroiliac joint arthritis, Sciatic Nerve intrapment and pain, and Diabetic Neuropathy  that accompany hip problems. Any of these conditions can add to hip pain, hip muscle weakness and hip ligament laxity to create difficulties with balance. As a result, healthcare providers like Physical Therapists recommend that those folks who suffer with hip disabilities should practice steadiness exercises every day to enhance stability and decrease the risk of falling and suffering further injuries.

Senior Balance Exercises For Hip Instability

Medical researchers have shown that performing senior balance exercises on a consistent basis can help with improving balance and reducing the potential of a fall. In addition, practicing specific core muscle strengthening is essential to develop strong muscle contractions in the lower Abdominal muscles, trunk muscles in the lower back and hip muscles that surround the pelvis. By having strong pelvic, Abdominal and trunk muscles, people of all ages are able to enhance their overall steadiness with all movement activities. Now, you can practice a combination of specific lower extremity strengthening exercises in combination with a step by step sequence of senior balance exercises presented in the Exercise For Balance DVD to maximize your general stability and minimize any possibility of falling.

Benefits Of Vestibualr Rehabilitation And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Those With Dizziness

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.cominner ear vestibular organ
Symptoms of dizziness and imbalance plague individuals who are over sixty years of age, and performing senior balance exercises can be a great help to them. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Those in the healthcare profession who track the numbers of patients with dizziness or those in the aging population who fall secondary to balance problems have recorded that  half of people age 70 and older struggle with symptoms of imbalance and dizziness due to a vestibular disorder (inner ear problem) named benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Older adults who suffer with disequilibrium and vertigo are often referred to physical therapy for Vestibular rehabilitation therapy, which is used by audiologists, physical and occupational therapists , and physicians as a treatment and management strategy for patients with a vestibular dysfunction because of a vestibular disease or disorder. A Johns Hopkins study showed about 85% of all dizziness or vertigo symptoms are a result of either damage or wear to the inner ear. Other common causes of vestibular dysfunction include:
cardiovascular issues
diabetes
migraine (vestibular)
vestibular neuritis
stroke
shingles (herpes simplex)
traumatic brain injury
autoimmune disorders
labyrinthitis
labyrinthine concussion
Menieres disease
There are three different approaches to therapy based on the causes for dizziness and disequilibrium. Vestibular Therapy often includes canal repositioning techniques and habituation exercises to address the symptoms of vertigo. All patients, however, participate in balance exercises to improve their steadiness and elevate their safety and  quality of life.

Senior Balance Exercises Help With Disequilibrium

For older adults who suffer with dizziness and imbalance, participating in Vestibular Therapy and senior balance exercises can help improve your symptoms of vertigo and effects of disequilibrium. Simple stability routines can be performed at home on a daily basis to enhance steadiness with all movement activities. These steadiness exercises can be as basic as standing near a table, counter or other stable surface and weight bear on one foot. In that single stance position, the goal is to maintain that position for twenty seconds. during that time frame, you will develop strong balance reactions at the feet and ankles as well as build strong leg muscles that are necessary for good balance. You can learn these senior balance exercises by following along with the instruction of an experienced Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Superfood Of Fitness And Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises To Start A Walking Program

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comWalking- Exercise for balance for walking
Healthcare professionals often say that "walking is the superfood of fitness," and performing senior balance exercises  will prepare you to initiate a walking program. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  More and more doctors, physical therapists, personal trainers and caregivers realize that a walking program may never become as trendy as CrossFit, as sexy as mud runs or as ego-boosting as Ironman races but for fitness experts who stress daily movement over workouts and an active lifestyle over weekends of warrior games, walking is a super star. For author and scientist Katy Bowman, walking is a biological imperative like eating. In her book, "Move Your DNA: Restore Your Health Through Natural Movement," she suggests there are movement nutrients, just like dietary nutrients, that the body needs. "Walking is a superfood. It's the defining movement of a human," said Bowman, a bio mechanist based in Ventura, California. "It's a lot easier to get movement than it is to get exercise." She added that a small study of non-obese men published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise by scientists at Indiana University suggests that three five-minute walks done throughout three hours of prolonged sitting reverses the harmful effects of prolonged sitting on arteries in the legs. Garber, a professor of movement sciences at Columbia University in New York, said research suggests that even one bout of exercise causes beneficial physiological effects. But she concedes that walking does not do everything. It is less beneficial for bones than running, and for strength, it is better to lift weights. "Still," she said, "If you're going to pick one thing, research says it should be walking." The first step towards a safe walking program is to practice certain balance exercises to develop strong balance reactions and adequate stability.

 Balance Exercises Before Walking Regimes

Medical providers recommend that before beginning a walking program you should rehearse balance exercises to establish the necessary stability to avoid falling with any movement routine. Certain equilibrium exercises that can enhance steadiness with walking includes tandem walking. To complete an exercise of tandem walking, start by walking along a line in a heel to toe fashion where your toes actually touch the heel of the foot in front. By practicing tandem walking, you will develop fast and strong balance reactions at your feet and ankles as they adjust to the constant movement in the lower leg region as you tandem walk. You can follow along with these challenged gait activities and a step by step balance exercise program by following the instruction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist  in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Links With Falls, Brain Injury And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Limit Falls

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.commed-brain-profile[1]
Medical professionals often warn older adults about the dangers of falling and the benefits of performing senior balance exercises on a regular basis. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Falling  has long been recognized as a high risk for serious bodily injury to aging bodies. Researchers have now found that one of the consequences of falling – traumatic brain injury (TIB) – is associated with an increased risk of dementia in adults 55 years and older, according to their report published online by JAMA Neurology. Medical researchers have shown that a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury is associated with an increase in dementia risk for adults 55 years of age and older, they report. On the other hand, for senior citizens – age 65 and older – it only takes a mild traumatic brain injury to make dementia look more likely. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that Americans 55 years and older account for more than 60 percent of all hospitalizations for traumatic brain injury. The highest rates of traumatic brain injury-related emergency department (ED) visits, inpatient stays and deaths, however, are happening among those patients 75 years and older. Researchers Raquel C. Gardner, M.D., of the University of California, San Francisco, and colleagues examined the risk of dementia among adults 55 years and older with recent traumatic brain injury compared with adults with non-traumatic brain injury  body trauma (NTT), which was defined as fractures but not of the head or neck. In the study, a total of 51,799 patients with trauma (31.5 percent) had traumatic brain injury. Of those, 4,361 patients (8.4 percent) developed dementia compared with 6,610 patients (5.9 percent) with NTT (other body trauma). The average time from trauma to dementia diagnosis was 3.2 years and it was shorter in the traumatic brain injury group compared with the NTT group (3.1 vs. 3.3 years). Moderate to severe traumatic brain injury was associated with increased risk of dementia at 55 years or older, while mild traumatic brain injury at 65 years or older increased the dementia risk. The good news about this study is that researchers have also found that consistently performing senior balance exercises will enhance stability and reduce the frequency of falling, which leads to traumatic brain injury.

Senior Balance Exercises Reduce Falls

The best way to prevent falls and injuries like brain injuries that are a result of falling is to rehearse senior balance exercises every day. Simple equilibrium routines can be as basic as standing on one foot for twenty to thirty seconds. To perform this exercise safely, you should stand near a table, counter or other stable object that you can hold on to if you need to as you first start to practice this steadiness routine. Additionally, consistency with stability routines is critical to develop strong balance reactions as well as strong connections between the sensory input in your feet and ankles and the balance center in your brain. That is why it is recommended to begin the senior balance exercise program detailed in the exercise for balance DVD.

Nik Wallenda Shows Off His Balance Training

Balance Exercises On A High Wire

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comPhotos: Nik Wallenda on the high wire
Nik Wallenda demonstrated his awesome balance training on a high wire above Chicago this weekend. Please see      http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now On Sunday record-breaking daredevil  Nik Wallenda completed a blindfolded tightrope walk in downtown Chicago. He accomplished his most challenging feat to date. He shimmed along a tightrope, completing a walk between two skyscrapers 600 feet above downtown Chicago, partly blindfolded. The death defying walk  consisted of two parts, starting from Marina City's West Tower, about 588 feet high. He crossed above the Chicago River to the Leo Burnett Building in just under seven minutes, finishing 671 feet above the street. After he returned to the West Tower, he crossed to the East Tower blindfolded in one minute and 20 seconds. During the walk, Wallenda battled high winds as well as an uphill climb that equaled about eight stories. Through it all, Wallenda exhibited extraordinary balance skills.

Daily Balance Exercises Maximize Stability

Obviously, we all can not operate at the level Nik Wallenda in terms of balance abilities, but we all can improve steadiness with walking activities in our daily lives by performing balance exercises on a regular basis. A daily dose of equilibrium routines will noticeable enhance steadiness with walking, whether the terrain is a flat surface like a street, sidewalk or hardwood floors or on irregular surfaces like thick carpet or hiking trails. As an example, if you practice standing on one foot for twenty seconds three times in a row every day for several weeks, you will build strong balance reactions at your feet and ankles. Additionally, rehearsing a single leg standing routine will develop strong muscles in the calf, which are essential for adequate steadiness. thankfully, for us regular every day folks, now there is a professionally filmed exercise For Balance DVD developed by an experienced Physical Therapist which will help you practice specific steadiness routines in the convenience of your own home.

Essential Tremors And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Improve Steadiness

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
For those individuals who struggle with Essential tremors, rehearsing senior balance exercises can be beneficial. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical providers have defined Essential tremors as symptoms that are demonstrated in people with  noticeable shaking that intensifies as they move. With Essential tremors, individuals have difficulties with activities like walking, getting up from a chair, and turning in a kitchen or bedroom. Additionally,  Essential tremors make routine tasks like drinking, eating, handwriting, dressing and grooming  challenging. Fine motor skills that require a steady hand — like writing a signature, buttoning a blouse and applying makeup, among others — are sometimes the hardest tasks for people to perform. Furthermore, many patients complain about having difficultly holding dining utensils or drinks without spilling them when they walk. For these patients, there are specific Physical Therapy techniques that can help. As an example, patients may start with sand in a cup or something that's heavier and does not move around as much as drink when they walk, then eventually progress to liquid. These and other difficulties with gait are common with essential tremor. These problems include gait asymmetry, and decreased cadence and velocity. Some tremors can become so significant that balance is noticeably affected. Many patients fear falling and feel like they are losing control of their limbs. Therefore, gait and balance training are a big focus in Physical Therapy treatment plans.  Therapy may include patients carrying plates with weights on them and walking quickly down a hall, or walking slowly and changing directions, or walking while turning their heads side to side. In Physical Therapy, patients are encouraged to do  things to challenge their balance while they are holding something.  Teaching patients to use a cane or assisted device and safely getting their hand on a support surface to steady themselves are important strategies. Additionally, practicing certain senior balance exercises every day is critical for these individuals.

Daily Senior Balance Exercises Minimize Tremors

Those older adults who are diagnosed with Essential  tremors are encouraged to perform senior balance exercises every day to reduce their tremors and enhance their overall stability. Other steadiness techniques they can practice include standing on soft or uneven surface like thick carpet or a couch cushion with their feet shoulder width a part. In this position, they can safely challenge their balance and develop strong and fast balance reactions at their feet and ankles. You can learn which stability strategies to employ and which senior balance exercises to practice by following along in the comfort of your own home with the exercise for balance dvd.
