First Step To Improve Fitness: Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Help Kick Off Your Fitness

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comSimple Senior Balance Exercises
Older adults who want to be more active and enhance their health need to start their fitness programs with senior balance exercises to first establish a solid foundation of stability. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers have shown that physical activity can be beneficial in many ways including a few mentioned here:
-Increasing cardiovascular function
-Improving musculoskeletal strength and flexibility
-Enhancing mood through the release of feel good neurochemicals
Fitness regimens must be individualized for older adults according to their baseline level of stability, conditioning and disability, and be instituted gradually and safely, particularly for elderly and poorly conditioned adults. Fitness programs should include, however, components involving balance training, strength training and endurance training.

Components Of Fitness And Senior Balance Exercises

Fitness programs for older adults should be preceded by certain  senior balance exercises. As mentioned above, there are certain components of fitness programs for aging individuals including strength training, endurance training and balance training.
Resistance And Flexibility training. Flexibility exercises are strongly recommended for active older adults to maintain range of motion, optimize performance and limit injury. Two days a week or more of flexibility training—sustained stretches and static/non-ballistic (non-resistant) movements—are recommended for senior athletes. Additionally,  Prolonged, intense resistance training can increase muscle strength, lean muscle and bone mass more consistently than aerobic exercise alone. Moderately intense resistance regimens also decrease fat mass. Sustained lower and upper body resistance training bolsters bone density and reduces the risk of strains, sprains and acute fractures.
Endurance training. Sustained and at least moderately intensive aerobic training promotes heart health, increases oxygen consumption, and has been linked to other musculoskeletal benefits, including less accumulation of fat mass, maintenance of muscle strength and cartilage volumes. A minimum of 150 to 300 minutes a week of endurance training, in 10 to 30 minute episodes, for elite senior athletes is recommended. Less vigorous and/or short-duration aerobic regimens may provide limited benefit.
balance training. Senior balance exercises should be performed on a daily basis and can include simple activities like standing on one foot or walking along a line heel to toe. Both of these equilibrium routines will strengthen and speed up the balance reactions at your feet and ankles. You can learn step by step progressions of senior balance exercises by following along with an expert Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Senior Balance Exercises Help With Most Common Symptoms

Senior Balance Exercises: Top Priority For Older Adults

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Following a regular program of senior balance exercises is one of the best ways to combat the most common complaints expressed to physicians across America. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now According to Health In Aging, The most common symptoms that doctors hear from older patients are:
  • Vertigo.  A sensation that everything around you is spinning or moving, or that you yourself are spinning around.
  • Lightheadedness or “near fainting” (presyncope).  A feeling of weakness, or dizziness.
  • Unsteadiness.  A feeling of imbalance, disorientation, and occasionally a loss of your sense of time, or place.
These symptoms all attribute to balance problems and a potential for falling for those in the aging population. Additionally, Balance problems may be linked to:
  • inner ear problems (the most common source of vertigo)
  • headache (including migraines)
  • anxiety or panic
  • ringing in the ears
  • allergies or infections
  • getting up quickly from sitting or lying down
  • a growth on the auditory nerve (such as an acoustic neuroma)
  • problems with nerves in your legs and feet
  • low blood pressure
  • dehydration.
As a result, performing senior balance exercises on a regular basis is critical for all older individuals.

Senior Balance Exercises Improve Steadiness

Knowing which senior balance exercises to start with is one of the most important steps towards improving balance. All stability routines can be initiated at a very easy, basic level and can be progressed when the individual is ready for the next step. Often times, the starting point for a beginning routine involves standing on both feet and shifting one's body weight in all directions, including front to back and side to side. The purpose of this exercise is to learn how to control one's body weight so that if they are in a precarious situation where they feel off-balanced, they will have the balance abilities to pull themselves back to a stable position with their body weight lined up in the center of their feet. Additionally, this first exercise helps to develop strong connections between the sensory input from the feet to  the balance center in the brain. Equilibrium exercises can be progressed to standing on one foot, which is a necessary ingredient of walking. During the walking pattern, the body is supported by one foot during the stance phase for that leg while they other leg swings through for the next step. these senior balance exercises and appropriate ways to progress to the next exercise can be learned by following the direction of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Depression And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Build The Foundation For Safe Fitness

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.combocci ball
Unfortunately many older adults suffer from depression for a myriad of reasons, but starting senior balance exercises can initiate a path to increased activity and mood elevation. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Depression in aging individuals can be a result of decreased quality of life, loss of significant relationships, loneliness, medication, limited mobility, health issues and other factors. On the other hand, medical researchers have shown that depression symptoms often improve with exercise. When a senior citizen has anxiety or depression, exercise seems like the last activity they want to do. Once they get going, exercise has enormous benefits both physically, mentally and emotionally. Current research on anxiety, depression and exercise shows that the psychological and physical benefits of fitness can also help to minimize anxiety as well as enhance mood. As an example, working out increases cardiovascular output, muscle strength and neurochemical release, which can help you feel better overall and more relaxed in particular.  To be specific, exercise can reduce depression in certain ways including:
-Release feel-good brain chemicals such as endorphins
-Take your mind off worries  by distracting from the cycle of negative thoughts
-Increase social interaction by meeting new people or interacting with others during an exercise session
-Develop healthy coping strategies to manage anxiety and depression through exercise rather than possibly coping with depression through alcohol, worry, negative thoughts, or simply ignoring the issue
The first step in starting a fitness program to alleviate depression is to build confidence and stability through practicing senior balance exercises.

Senior Balance Exercises For Safe Fitness Programs

Before embarking on a fitness program, it is wise to practice senior balance exercises to establish good stability with all movement patterns. Healthcare professionals like physical therapists, doctors and nurses suggest developing adequate steadiness with equilibrium routines before initiating a walking program, gym exercises, tennis, golf or other activities. Fitness routines that help to fight depression should involve getting your heart rate up. As an example, To elevate your cardiac output with a walking routine, it is recommended to begin with specific balance exercises that maximize your stability with walking on uneven surfaces like grass, hiking trails and uneven paths. One way to improve steadiness with walking is to rehearse tandem waling, where you walk along a line heel to toe. Walking in this narrow base fashion will enhance your balance skills needed to start a outdoor walking program to alleviate depression and anxiety. You can learn how to safely perform tandem walking and other senior balance exercises by following along with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Your Fountain Of Youth And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Pave The Path To The Fountain Of Youth

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.combocci ball
Older adults often dream of a fountian of youth where they have energy and vitality to be active, safe and steady, which can be facilitated by practicing senior balance exercises. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now The Fountain Of Youth has many different definitions for people across the spectrum of aging. For most older individuals, however, that illusory fountain includes being healthy, strong, and stable both financially and with all movement activities. Being physically active may significantly improve musculoskeletal and overall health, and minimize or delay the effects of aging, according to a review of the latest research on senior athletes (ages 65 and up) appearing in the September issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Many people in the aging population have assumed that aging causes an inevitable deterioration of the body and its ability to function, as well as increased rates of related injuries such as sprains, strains and fractures; diseases, such as obesity and diabetes; and osteoarthritis and other bone and joint conditions and imbalance with standing and walking events. However, recent research on senior, elite athletes suggests usage of comprehensive fitness, balance and nutrition routines helps minimize bone and joint health decline and maintain overall physical health. In a nutshel, daily fitness programs that include strength and stability exercises have been proven by medical researchers to enhance steadiness and maximize quality of an active life.

Senior Balance Exercises For Quality Of Life

Medical researchers for geriatric patients have demonstreated that rehearsing senior balance exercises and  specific strengthening exercises for the trunk and lower legs can be beneficial to advance stability and maintain an active lifestyle. To be specific, steadiness exercises are the foundation of building good balance that allows older people to be stable and safe with all movement activities. One basic equilibrium that an older person can start with involves standing on one foot and centering the body weight in the center of the foot. This equilibrium rouitne has multiple benefits including developing strong and fast balance reactions at the feet and ankles. This single leg standing exercise also helps the indivdual to establish good stability, which is necessary during the stance phase of walking. These stability tips and certain senior balance exercises can be practiced on a daily basis by following along with the instruction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Balance Exercises Reduce Post Surgical Complications

Balance Exercises Decrease Post Surgery Problems

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/
Performing balance exercises after a hip or knee replacement surgery is one way to reduce complications following the procedure. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now According to a Medicare and Medicaid news report, medical researchers within Medicare have been investigating the hospitals with the most complications following hip and knee surgeries.  Medicare has begun tracking the outcomes of hip and knee replacement surgeries, identifying 95 hospitals where elderly patients were more likely to suffer significant setbacks. The government also named 97 hospitals where patients tended to have the smoothest recoveries. The analysis, which was released last week, is the latest part of the government’s push to improve quality at the nation’s hospitals instead of simply paying Medicare patients’ bills.   The evaluation of hip and knee surgery outcomes is significant because for the first time, Medicare is rating hospitals’ performance on two common elective procedures. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, About 600,000 patients in the traditional Medicare program have their hips or knees replaced each year. The growing popularity of these operations has made them a more significant expense for Medicare and private insurers. In 2010, there were 719,000 knee replacements costing nearly $12 billion and 332,000 hip replacements nearly $8 billion. In the evaluation of patients following hip and knee replacement surgeries,  Medicare used two measures. One was how often the patients ended up being readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of discharge.  The other was how often they suffered one of eight complications following surgery. Those included a heart attack, pneumonia, sepsis or shock within seven days of admission. They also included bleeding at the site of the surgery, a blood clot in the lung or death within a month of admission. Medicare also counted mechanical complications with implants and infections of the joint or wound within 90 days of admission. Dr. Eric Coleman, an expert on readmissions at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, said some hospitals are trying to prevent joint replacement patients from returning by educating them ahead of the surgeries about how to take care of themselves and warning signs of problems. This program provides “a chance to walk you through what to expect, what your family would expect, how to arrange your home,” Coleman said. “In most of the cases of readmission reductions, we’re still very reactive.” One component of patient education includes teaching balance principles and balance exercises, which have been proven to reduce the number of falls in older individuals.

Balance Exercises Following Surgery

Balance exercises are essential to rehearse on a regular basis after a surgical procedure like a hip or knee replacement.  Since joint replacement surgery changes the sensory feedback from the lower extremity to the brain, it is imperative to learn proper stability strategies after a surgical procedure. One example of balance techniques that help to enhance steadiness involves standing with the feet shoulder distance apart and centering ones body weight in the middle of the feet. this focal point helps the balance center in the brain maximize sensory feedback and improve stability. these steadiness techniques and balance exercises can be practiced on a daily basis by following the expert instruction of a physical therapist in the exercise for balance dvd.

Vestibular Migraine And Balance Exercises

Balance Exercises For Those With Vestibular Migraine

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
For those who suffer with Vestibular Migraines, practicing balance exercises can help with disequilibrium. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Vestibular Migraine is also called Migraine Associated Vertigo. Migraine is one of the most debilitating chronic disorders in the United States and folks who suffer with Migraines may also have symptoms of disequilibrium. Subsequently, balance problems also plague individuals as they age. As far as Migraines go, they are almost as prevalent as hypertension (high blood pressure) and are more common than asthma and diabetes mellitus. More importantly, migraine strikes people during what are expected to be their most productive years: between ages 20 and 40 for most women, with a slightly higher age range for men. Despite better diagnostic capabilities and efforts to improve public awareness and education, it is estimated that approximately 50% of migraineurs go undiagnosed or mismanaged to this day. Many self-treat, or are treated inappropriately for sinus or other non-migrainous types of headache. Often described as “sick headache,” migraine is typically characterized by unilateral onset of head pain, severe progressive intensity of pain, throbbing or pounding, and interference with the person’s routine activities. Accompanying symptoms of photophobia (sensitivity to light) or phonosensitivity (intolerance to noise), as well as nausea and/or vomiting, are common, and often leads to the inability to perform daily tasks. Furthermore, balance problems and vertigo can also accompany episodes of migraines. Consequently, folks who suffer with migraines should learn steadiness strategies and routinely perform balance exercises to maximize their stability in order to limit the possibility of a fall.

Balance Exercises For Migraine Sufferers

Balance exercises can help those who struggle with vestibular migraines and the accompanying symptoms of disequilibrium. Since vertigo and imbalance can coexist with vestibular migraines, it is essential to learn principles to maximize steadiness and perform balance exercises every day to cope with the symptoms of lightheadedness and instability that is associated with vestibular migraines. One important principle is to focus on the sense of touch between your feet and the floor to maximize your sensory input to the balance system in your brain, enhancing balance abilities. Additionally, it is critical to rehearse equilibrium routines on a consistent basis in order to develop strong balance reactions and advance steadiness. You can learn the specific stability strategies and balance exercises in the Exercise For Balance DVD, which was developed by an experienced Physical Therapist.

Start Early With Senior Balance Exercises

Daily Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comBalance Training For Later In Life
A daily dose of senior balance exercises is a great way for older individuals to enhance steadiness and prevent falling. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Unfortunately, all of us follow a common pattern of aging that affects our stability with all movement activities as we age. For instance, as we  progress in years, we experience a decline in several of the major systems that influence balance. Those systems include:

- decreased vision
- slower inner ear messages from the vestibular system to the appropriate region in the brain that corresponds to balance
- weaker lower leg muscle strength
- slower balance reactions at the ankles and feet
- increased stiffness at the ankles
- poor posture and weak trunk muscles
Typically, most older adults see a decline in these systems and components as early as sixty years old. As a result, it is imperative to start rehearsing senior balance exercises on a consistent basis before entering your sixties and before you might experience a debilitating fall.

Senior Balance Exercises Improve Stability

Medical professionals have determined that senior balance exercises are an effective means to enhance steadiness and limit the possibility of falling for aging individuals. Since medical researchers have proven that an individual's balance abilities begin to decline in their later years, equilibrium routines should be initiated before the diminishing steadiness is noted. To avoid becoming a statistic of being one of the three seniors who are destined to fall this year, beginning stability exercises as a person reaches their late fifties is imperative. One beginning steadiness routine that you can start involves standing near a counter or table to hang on to if you need to and position your feet in a line with one foot in front of the other. In this narrow base of support position, you will challenge your balance reactions. You can learn how to progress senior balance exercises such as this tandem stance routine by following along with a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.
