Predicting Falls And The Need For Senior Balance Exercises

Understanding Falls Encourages Senior Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comJohn & Ann Betar, 101 & 97 yrs, married 80
Senior balance exercises are essential for older adults to complete on a daily basis, especially for those who are at risk for falling. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers have determined that loss of stability accompanies a decline in the function of the basic components of the balance system-- the eyes, inner ear vestibular system and sensory feedback from the feet. For instance, for individuals who experience a decrease in vision from macular degeneration or a decrease in sensation from Diabetic neuropathy, they experience a much higher risk for falling and hurting themselves. Furthermore, medical researchers have recently been using data regarding falling to predict cognitive decline and possible early warning signals for Alzheimer’s disease. In a report published by Dr. Susan L. Stark, she found that  Seniors citizens – persons age 65 and older – who tend to fall more often than most may be showing early signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Cognitively normal older adults with evidence of early brain changes typical of Alzheimer’s disease fell more often than did their peers without these brain changes. Additionally,  movement changes precede cognitive changes in people with very early signs of Alzheimer’s or mild cognitive impairment. The investigators studied 125 volunteers age 65 and older to determine how often they fell over the course of one year. Participants also underwent brain imaging to detect the protein amyloid in the brain and a lumbar puncture to look for certain proteins in cerebrospinal fluid—biomarkers associated with preclinical Alzheimer’s disease. After adjusting for differences in the ability to perform everyday activities, the researchers found that participants with biomarkers indicating greater risk for Alzheimer’s were more likely to fall, and to fall sooner, compared with those with less biomarker evidence.

Senior Balance Exercises Are Helpful For Older Adults

Those older individuals who practice senior balance exercises can help to limit the potential for falling. medical researchers have determined that folks who show signs of early cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s disease do have the ability to learn balance techniques for controlling their weight shifting. they also have the capacity to improve their balance abilities, which will assist in reducing the possibility of falling and fracturing a hip or wrist. equilibrium exercises can be initiated in a simple manner with a wide base of support and stable surface. stability exercises can be advanced to include narrow base of support routines and unstable surface exercises. you can follow along with a senior balance exercise program developed by a physical therapist in the exercise for balance dvd to progress your balance abilities at your own speed.

Insight On Vertigo And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Can Assist With Vertigo

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Symptoms of vertigo can become more common in later years and practicing senior balance exercises on a daily basis can relieve some of those feelings of dizziness or lightheadedness. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now The symptoms of vertigo can become more common place as we age. Vertigo can arise from problems with medications, inner ear vestibular issues, central processing difficulties in the brain and a host of other reasons. Deciphering the cause of vertigo can be challenging. To be more specific, Vertigo is the illusion of motion, usually rotational motion. As patients age, vertigo becomes an increasingly common presenting complaint. The most common causes of this condition are benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, acute vestibular neuronitis or labyrinthitis, Ménière’s disease, migraine, and anxiety disorders. Less common causes include vertebrobasilar ischemia and retrocochlear tumors. The distinction between peripheral and central vertigo usually can be made clinically and guides management decisions. Most patients with vertigo do not require extensive diagnostic testing and can be treated in the primary care setting. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo usually improves with a canalith repositioning procedure. Acute vestibular neuronitis or labyrinthitis improves with initial stabilizing measures and a vestibular suppressant medication, followed by vestibular rehabilitation exercises. Ménière’s disease often responds to the combination of a low-salt diet and diuretics. Vertiginous migraine headaches generally improve with dietary changes, a tricyclic antidepressant, and a beta blocker or calcium channel blocker. Vertigo associated with anxiety usually responds to a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Vertigo, a type of dizziness, is the illusion of motion, usually rotational motion. Associated symptoms include nausea, emesis, and diaphoresis. Vertigo should be distinguished from other types of dizziness, such as imbalance (dysequilibrium) and lightheadedness (presyncope). Most cases of vertigo can be improved with a combination of treatments, which included vestibular rehabilitation therapy. One of the main components of vestibular therapy is practicing balance exercises, geared to decrease vertigo and improve balance.

Daily Senior Balance Exercises For Lightheadedness

For those individuals who suffer with vertigo and lightheadedness, it is recommended to perform senior balance exercises every day to help reduce the intensity and frequency of the feelings.  As an example, one stability routine that will help with imbalance is  to stand with your feet shoulder width a part and center your weight in the middle of your arches. In that position, concentrate on the sense of touch between your feet and the ground. By focusing on that sensory input, your brain will be able to concentrate on that sensory feedback, which will dampen the symptoms of dizziness. YOu can progress this exercise by standing with your feet in a tandem position where one foot is directly in front of the other foot. In this position. you will be able to maximize your balance reactions at the feet and ankles, which will enhance your steadiness skills. YOu can learn these stability strategies and specific senior balance exercises by following the direction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the exercise For Balance DVD.

Senior Balance Exercises For Fall Prevention

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Many times a fall leads to a broken bone for older adults but practicing  senior balance exercises on a regular basis can reduce the possibility of falling. Please see more information at  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical statisticians have recorded that ninety-two percent of hospital admissions are due to falls and the injuries that come with falling. Older individuals are at a greater risk for injuries when they fall. In later years, many in the aging population, especially women, have a condition called osteoporosis. Osteoporosis involves decreased density of the bones and more "brittle" bones. As a result, if someone who has osteoporosis falls, they are more likely to suffer a fracture in their spine, shoulder, arm bone or hip. Furthermore, as we age,  our balance abilities decline due to changes in our vision, inner ear vestibular system and sense of touch in our feet. In addition, we become weaker in our leg and trunk muscles and stiffer in our ankle joints. All these changes lead to a decreased ability to accommodate to different surfaces that we walk on (like thick carpet, grass, hardwood floors, slick tile or icy sidewalks). The end point for many senior citizens is a fall and injury from a fall. More often than not, those injuries lead to hospitalizations and even to nursing home stays. In general, falls can be extremely costly in terms of a financial burden as well as a loss of quality of life. The best way to combat falling is to prevent a fall by performing certain senior balance exercises on a daily basis. Medical researchers have proven that partaking in a fitness program that includes stability routines helps to decrease the risk and incidence of falling and the occurrence of injuries.

Senior Balance Exercises To Prevent Falls

Over the past few years, medical researchers have proven the effectiveness of performing senior balance exercises to reduce the potential of a fall. Fall prevention has become extremely important to medical facilities including hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and community centers that cater to senior citizens, due to the emphasis on reducing medical costs and improving quality of care. Thankfully, now there is a specific balance program developed by an experienced Physical Therapist that can be used in a variety of settings to assist senior citizens with their balance problems. The Home based DVD includes essential information on how to center your body weight in the middle of your base of support determined by your feet. with your weight centered, you are better able to enhance the sensory input from your feet to the balance center in your brain, maximizing your steadiness. 2 Home Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises At Home

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
For many older adults getting out to a clinic or gym can be very difficult, which necessitates that need to practice strengthening exercises and  senior balance exercises at home.  Please see more pertinent information at    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now In addition, many older individuals are more likely to complete a fitness program if they can practice the exercises in the comfort of their own home.  As a result, many medical professionals like Physician assistance, nurses and physical therapists have worked on producing fitness programs to be experienced at home.  For example, as a physical therapist I have recommended some of my patients who have complaints of both dizziness and imbalance to practice a simple stability routine at home.  This steadiness routine improves function of the inner ear vestibular system as well as the balance system.  This final exercise involves sitting in a rocking chair and rocking back and forth while looking straight ahead.  The rocking chair provides motion to the inner ear vestibular organs, helping them to maximize their function.  Two progress this exercise, I can ask the patient to continue with rocking while adding head turns side to side or up and down.  By adding head turns, I can increase the complexity of the exercise to further advance the sensory input into the balance center in the brain.  To be sure, this rocking chair routine is vary challenging for anyone who has symptoms of lightheadedness or a dizziness.  Usually folks who have complaints of lightheadedness and dizziness also suffer from imbalance and would also benefit from practicing specific senior balance exercises.

Home Style Senior Balance Exercises

By Practicing senior balance exercises at home, older adults are able to enhance their stability, thereby reducing and their potential risk for falling and hurting themselves.  In addition to practicing routines while rocking in a rocking chair to stimulate their inner ear and balance system, aging individuals can combine this routine with a standing steadiness exercise.  one example of a standing equilibrium routine is tandem standing. tandem stnding involves having the one foot positioned directly in front of the other foot.  during A  tandem standing procedure, each individual will attempt to hold the position for twenty seconds and repeat that exercise three times on each foot.  At first, tandem standing routines can be very challenging.  The older adult will naturally experience movement at their feet and ankles, which is their natural balance reactions at work.  Over time however, the person will experience  improvement in their balance reactions which will lead to a more stable experience during this steadiness exercise.  As a result, the older individual will become more stable with all movement activities such as walking upstairs, turning it in the kitchen or bathroom and staying a steady during dressing activities.  In the long run, the  older adult will be able to diminish their symptoms of dizziness as well as enhance their overall steadiness to improve their quality of life.  You can learn how to correctly perform tandem standing routines as well as other senior balance exercises by following the direction of a qualified physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.

2 Combined Eye And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises With Eye Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Our visual sensory information is essential for maintaining stability with movement to activities and can be an enhanced by combining eye routines with  senior balance exercises.  Please see further information that   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now The human brain uses three main types of sensory information to help with steadiness.  The primary sensory input that the human brain  uses is our visual information.  Our vision helps to see what is going on in the environment around us.  As an example, our eyes to tell us if we're walking on carpets, grass, uneven hiking trails, or slippery sidewalks.  Furthermore our vision tells our brain how high to lift the leg to go up a set of stairs or to step a curb.  Unfortunately, as we age our vision typically diminishes and can be further reduced with medical diseases such as glaucoma, or macular degeneration.  At a result , it is critical for older adults to perform specific senior balance exercises as well as visual exercises to help maximize their balance abilities and limit their potential for falling.

Combine Eye And Senior Balance Exercises

By combining visual exercises with senior balance exercises, older individuals are abled to maximize their steadiness with called movement activities.  As an example, in the physical therapy clinics we have the patient hold a business card at arm's length and look at the writing on the business card while they turned their head slowly 45° to the right and then 45° to the left.  This visual routine is called gaze stabilization, which helps the brain focus on one object while the head is moving side to side.  You can then ask the patient to hold their head still while they move the business card slowly left to right.  This visual routine helps in the brain processing of all tracking movements.  A more difficult routine involves moving to the head 45° to the left WHIL you move the business card 45° to the right and keep your eyes on the card throughout the exercise.  This technique enhances the vestibular ocular reflex which is one of the primary visual inputs that the human brain uses.  Once a patient becomes comfortable with these visual routines, we can then progress to adding the stability exercises.  As an example, I have a patient stand on one foot while they look at the business card in front of them and turn their head 45° to the right and 45° to the left.  We can progress this visual exercise even more by having the individual stand on one foot in gaze at the business card as it moves 45° to the left and 45° to the right in front of them.  The hardest eye routine to perform involves training  the vestibular ocular reflex while standing on one foot.  To be specific, you stand on one foot while your head turns 45° to the left and you watch the business card turning 45° to the right.  You can learn how to correctly perform these and other senior balance exercises by following the demonstration of a qualified physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.

Spine Narrowing And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Back Issues

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Many older adults suffer from back pain, which can alter their way of walking and lead to a need to perform  senior balance exercises to enhance stability and minimize the possibility of falling. Please see more information at  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Back pain can come from a number of sources including muscle strains, arthritis, disc degeneration and spinal stenosis. In fact, Lumbar spinal stenosis is a very common condition where the boney vertebrae in the spine change in a manner where there is less space for the spinal cord or spinal nerves.  In lumbar stenosis, the spinal nerve roots in the lower back become compressed and this can produce symptoms of sciatica—tingling, weakness or numbness that radiates from the low back and into the buttocks and legs—especially with activity. Lumbar spinal stenosis often mimics symptoms of vascular insufficiency. Both conditions of Lumbar spinal stenosis and vascular insufficiency can cause claudication, which means leg pain with walking. If vascular studies identify normal blood flow, and there is confirmation of spinal stenosis on diagnostic testing, the symptoms are then called neurogenic claudication. In the classic description, people with spinal stenosis will describe an onset of leg pain, or weakness with walking, but with relief of symptoms with sitting. Many will also describe increased tolerance to walking when flexed forward, such as when walking while leaning forward on a shopping cart. While lumbar spinal stenosis most often occurs at the L4-L5 and L3-L4 levels, it can occur any level in the spine. The degenerative cascade may eventually effect most of the vertebral segments of the lumbar spine. Lumbar spine stenosis can effect the posture people walk in. For instance, those who have stenosis find it less painful to lean forward while walking. This forward leaning posture, however, puts the person's center of gravity of their body weight right at the edge of their toes. Any slight movement forwards can cause an older individual to fall forwards and injure themselves. Furthermore, the numbness and tinging in ones feet who has Lumbar spinal stenosis can further deteriorate an older adult's balance abilities, leading to a fall. For that reason, medical professionals like doctors, nurses and physical therapists encourage older folks who have been diagnosed with Lumbar spinal stenosis to practice senior balance exercises every day.

Senior Balance Exercises For Back Issues

Any older adults who suffer with Lumbar spine stenosis or other back conditions that cause pain, weakness in the legs, numbness and tingling in the feet or o limping while walking are encouraged to rehearse senior balance exercises on a regular basis to improve steadiness and avoid a fall. One of the basic equilibrium routines you can perform involves standing with your feet shoulder width a part and your body weight centered in your feet. In this position, try concentrating on the sense of touch between your feet and the floor. By focusing on that sensory input you will connect the sensations from your feet with the balance center in your brain, which will advance your overall stability. You can learn how to practice this and other senior balance exercises by joining in the instruction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Restless Legs And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Restless Legs

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Older individuals tend to combat many conditions as they age which effect mobility and stability and can be helped by participating in fitness programs and senior balance exercises. Please see more information at   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now According to the American Academy of Neurology, Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder characterized by unpleasant sensations in the legs and an uncontrollable, and sometimes overwhelming, urge to move them for relief. Individuals affected with the disorder often describe the sensations as throbbing, polling, or creeping. The sensations range in severity from uncomfortable to irritating to painful.
Treatment
For those with mild to moderate symptoms, many physicians suggest certain lifestyle changes and activities to reduce or eliminate symptoms.  As an example, individuals diagnosed with Restless Leg Syndrome are encouraged to decreased use of caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco to provide some relief. Physicians may suggest that certain individuals take supplements to correct deficiencies in iron, folate, and magnesium. Taking a hot bath, massaging the legs, or using a heating pad or ice pack can help relieve symptoms in some patients.Physicians also may suggest a variety of medications to treat Restless Leg Syndrome, including dopaminergics, benzodiazepines (central nervous system depressants), opioids, and anticonvulsants. The drugs ropinirole, pramipexole, gabapentin enacarbil, and rotigotine have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treating  moderate to severe Restless Leg Syndrome . The Relaxis pad, which the person can place at the site of discomfort when in bed and provides 30 minutes of vibrations (counterstimulation) that ramp off after 30 minutes, also has been approved by the FDA.
Prognosis
Restless Leg Syndrome is generally a life-long condition for which there is no cure. Symptoms may gradually worsen with age. Nevertheless, current therapies can control the disorder, minimizing symptoms and increasing periods of restful sleep. In addition, some individuals have remissions, periods in which symptoms decrease or disappear for days, weeks, or months, although symptoms usually eventually reappear. Another consideration for those aging folks who suffer with Restless Leg Syndrome is that the changes in sensory perception and motor activity can lead to imbalance and a greater risk for falling. As a result, medical professionals like doctors, nurses and physical therapists recommend that those with Restless Leg Syndrome practice senior balance exercises to help build their steadiness and limit their potential for a fall.

Senior Balance Exercises For Better Stability

Medical scientists have proven that older individuals who perform senior balance exercises on a regular BASIS enhance their steadiness and reduce their potential for falling. Some older adults with Restless Leg syndrome find that getting up and walking around helps to minimize their symptoms. Those aging adults, however, should rehearse equilibrium routines first in order to have necessary stability while they walk off their symptoms of Restless Legs. One equilibrium routine they can practice includes tandem walking. Tandem walking involves walking down a hallway heel to toe along a line. In this narrow base of support walking, the person will have their balance reactions challenged. You can learn how to perform tandem walking and other senior balance exercises by following along with the Exercise For Balance DVD.
