Mobility Enhancements With Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Help You Stay Mobile

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comBalance for biking
For most of us, as we age we tend to slow down and gradually become less mobile, but performing senior balance exercises  on a regular basis can combat that decline. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now The idea of sitting on the porch in a rocking chair and whittling the hours away does not appeal to all older adults. More and More, aging individuals these days want to stay as healthy and active as possible, enjoying time with friends and family playing golf, tennis, dancing, bike riding and much more. Medical researchers have found that participating in specific interventions like certain balance exercises and lower extremity strengthening routines can overall improve stability and maintain mobility for individuals who are sixty years old and older. To be specific, focusing on strengthening exercises for the calf (gastrocnemius) and thigh (quadriceps) muscles is essential as these particular muscles are critical for general steadiness. One easy exercise to build thigh muscle strength is partial squats, where you bend your knees and then straighten your knees.  Repeatedly getting up from a chair is also a great way to strengthen your quadriceps muscles. Another example of an appropriate strengthening exercise to improve stability is calf raises. Start with standing on both feet near a table or counter and raise your heels up off the floor on to your toes for about ten to twenty times.

Senior Balance Exercises Keep You Steady

To stay active and mobile as you age, it is recommended that you perform senior balance exercises and leg strengthening exercises every day. There are a few beginner steadiness exercises that you can rehearse on a regular basis like standing with your feet shoulder width a part and slowly  shifting your body weight forwards and backwards and then side to side. Learning how to control the way you shift your body weight is essential to control your equilibrium and not topple over, especially when walking on uneven surfaces like thick carpet or grass. You can learn these steadiness techniques and specific senior balance exercises by following the instruction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Activity Avoidance And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises For Stable Activities

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.combocci ball
The fear of falling and avoidance of subsequent activities is a very real and prevalent problem among older adults, which can be helped with performing a regular routine of senior balance exercises. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Fear of falling and avoidance of activity due to fear of falling are common in older people. Prevalence rates for fear of falling in community-living older persons range from 20 to 60%  and for avoidance of activity due to fear of falling from 15 to 55%.  Fear of falling and related avoidance of activity may lead to adverse consequences, like functional decline restriction of social participation, decreased quality of life increased risk of falling and institutionalisation. Indeed, fear of falling is suggested to be a potential health problem of equal importance to a fall. Medical researchers have investigated appropriate interventions to help reduce the fear of falling and limitations from that fear. Several interventions showed to reduce fear of falling or to improve confidence regarding performing activities without falling include practicing certain senior balance exercises and lower leg strengthening exercises.

Try Senior Balance Exercises To Continue Being Active

One significant goal of aging individuals is to stay active and enjoy the most out of life and rehearsing senior balance exercises every day can be an important component of achieving that goal. To stay involved in engaging activities like playing tennis or golf with friends, going for a walk with a spouse or family member or just getting out to the theater or movies, it is essential to practice equilibrium and strengthening routines on a daily basis. Medical studies have shown that consistent practice of steadiness exercises leads to improved balance, faster balance reactions at the feet and ankles and a reduction in the fear of falling. When you feel more stable on your feet, you are more likely to enjoy activities like dancing, bocce ball, and even just navigating through a restaurant for dinner. Now, you can follow along with specific senior balance exercises and stability techniques under the direction of an experienced Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Balance Exercises Limit Falls Secondary To Reaching

Balance Exercises Help Limit Falls From Reaching

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/
Practicing balance exercises is an effective way to reduce falls and  the injuries that occur with falling. You have probably heard stories  from a parent, uncle, neighbor or friend who was sitting in their recliner or couch and they leaned forward to get something off the  coffee table and ended up on the floor before they knew it. Maybe you  have heard a tale like the one my patient told me, who reached up in her cabinet in the bathroom for a pill bottle and she just kept going,  right on over on her back side. She earned quite a bump on the back or  her head, but the real damage was how much it shook up her confidence.  Sadly, these stories of falling secondary to reaching for something are  very common. The good news is that by learning some very important  balance principles and by practicing balance exercises, you can limit  your exposure to such falls. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises Reduce The Incidence Of Falling

By performing balance exercises on a consistent basis, you can improve your balance abilities and greatly reduce your risk for falling. One of  the keys for increasing your steadiness is to employ specific balance techniques with sitting, standing, walking and all movement activities. One such stability strategy is to learn how to center your weight over your base of support, whether you are sitting, standing or walking. Additionally, you can rehearse equilibrium routines on a consistent basis to help increase balance abilities. One such stability exercise is to start with your body weight centered in your base of support and then control shifting your weight forwards, backwards and side to side. You can perform this skill in sitting or on your feet. By practicing controlling your body weight, you will limit the potential to lean forwards or backwards and keep going all the way to the floor. You can learn certain balance techniques and balance exercises to practice every day at home with the Exercise For Balance DVD. This DVD was developed by a knowledgeable physical therapist to enable you to practice these techniques at home and not have to travel to a therapy clinic or pay a copay with each visit.

"Cancer Brain" And Balance EXercises

Balance Exercises For Cancer Survivors

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Practicing balance exercises is an essential component of rehabilitation for cancer survivors. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now The medical community is recognizing that cancer survivors are facing a myriad of additional issues following cancer treatments. "Cancer Brain" where the individual feels foggy, off balanced, light-headed and unable to think or process clearly is just one of the complaints that cancer patients have. Other complaints include:
- Emotional Distress- Studies show that 70% of cancer survivors experience depression following their cancer treatments
- Weakened Immune System- Cancer treatments suppress the immune system, creating a vulnerability to infection
- Physical Weakness And Fatigue- Cancer patients suffer from muscle weakness and generalized fatigue
- Cognitive Problems- "Chemo Brain" causes short term memory loss
- Balance And Dizziness Disordres- Chemotherapy and radiation can damage the inner ear hair cells leading to imbalance and dizziness
Consequently, it is essential for patients after cancer treatments to follow a regime of balance exercises to avoid falling and causing other injuries.

Balance Exercises Following Chemotherapy

Balance exercises are an important component of rehabilitation for after cancer treatments. There are a growing number of hospitals, therapy centers and community facilities which are launching cancer survivor-ship programs to help deal with post cancer issues. These programs include physical therapy, balance training, exercise classes and  emotional assistance. Often times, the cancer patient receives counseling and support group sessions to help deal with their emotional and cognitive issues. Additionally, the individuals are encouraged to participate in physical rehabilitation sessions, workouts, and balance training to manage the physical changes they have experienced. For those individuals who like to workout at home, there is an exceptional tool that can help them reach their physical goals of increased strength and improved balance, which they can use in the comfort of their own home. The exercise for balance dvd was developed by an experienced physical therapist and it includes valuable information on appropriate balance exercises, stability strategies and strengthening routines. The DVD is easy to follow and enables a cancer survivor with "Chemo Brain" to perform exercises at their own pace.

First Step To Improve Fitness: Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Help Kick Off Your Fitness

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comSimple Senior Balance Exercises
Older adults who want to be more active and enhance their health need to start their fitness programs with senior balance exercises to first establish a solid foundation of stability. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical researchers have shown that physical activity can be beneficial in many ways including a few mentioned here:
-Increasing cardiovascular function
-Improving musculoskeletal strength and flexibility
-Enhancing mood through the release of feel good neurochemicals
Fitness regimens must be individualized for older adults according to their baseline level of stability, conditioning and disability, and be instituted gradually and safely, particularly for elderly and poorly conditioned adults. Fitness programs should include, however, components involving balance training, strength training and endurance training.

Components Of Fitness And Senior Balance Exercises

Fitness programs for older adults should be preceded by certain  senior balance exercises. As mentioned above, there are certain components of fitness programs for aging individuals including strength training, endurance training and balance training.
Resistance And Flexibility training. Flexibility exercises are strongly recommended for active older adults to maintain range of motion, optimize performance and limit injury. Two days a week or more of flexibility training—sustained stretches and static/non-ballistic (non-resistant) movements—are recommended for senior athletes. Additionally,  Prolonged, intense resistance training can increase muscle strength, lean muscle and bone mass more consistently than aerobic exercise alone. Moderately intense resistance regimens also decrease fat mass. Sustained lower and upper body resistance training bolsters bone density and reduces the risk of strains, sprains and acute fractures.
Endurance training. Sustained and at least moderately intensive aerobic training promotes heart health, increases oxygen consumption, and has been linked to other musculoskeletal benefits, including less accumulation of fat mass, maintenance of muscle strength and cartilage volumes. A minimum of 150 to 300 minutes a week of endurance training, in 10 to 30 minute episodes, for elite senior athletes is recommended. Less vigorous and/or short-duration aerobic regimens may provide limited benefit.
balance training. Senior balance exercises should be performed on a daily basis and can include simple activities like standing on one foot or walking along a line heel to toe. Both of these equilibrium routines will strengthen and speed up the balance reactions at your feet and ankles. You can learn step by step progressions of senior balance exercises by following along with an expert Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Senior Balance Exercises Help With Most Common Symptoms

Senior Balance Exercises: Top Priority For Older Adults

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Following a regular program of senior balance exercises is one of the best ways to combat the most common complaints expressed to physicians across America. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now According to Health In Aging, The most common symptoms that doctors hear from older patients are:
  • Vertigo.  A sensation that everything around you is spinning or moving, or that you yourself are spinning around.
  • Lightheadedness or “near fainting” (presyncope).  A feeling of weakness, or dizziness.
  • Unsteadiness.  A feeling of imbalance, disorientation, and occasionally a loss of your sense of time, or place.
These symptoms all attribute to balance problems and a potential for falling for those in the aging population. Additionally, Balance problems may be linked to:
  • inner ear problems (the most common source of vertigo)
  • headache (including migraines)
  • anxiety or panic
  • ringing in the ears
  • allergies or infections
  • getting up quickly from sitting or lying down
  • a growth on the auditory nerve (such as an acoustic neuroma)
  • problems with nerves in your legs and feet
  • low blood pressure
  • dehydration.
As a result, performing senior balance exercises on a regular basis is critical for all older individuals.

Senior Balance Exercises Improve Steadiness

Knowing which senior balance exercises to start with is one of the most important steps towards improving balance. All stability routines can be initiated at a very easy, basic level and can be progressed when the individual is ready for the next step. Often times, the starting point for a beginning routine involves standing on both feet and shifting one's body weight in all directions, including front to back and side to side. The purpose of this exercise is to learn how to control one's body weight so that if they are in a precarious situation where they feel off-balanced, they will have the balance abilities to pull themselves back to a stable position with their body weight lined up in the center of their feet. Additionally, this first exercise helps to develop strong connections between the sensory input from the feet to  the balance center in the brain. Equilibrium exercises can be progressed to standing on one foot, which is a necessary ingredient of walking. During the walking pattern, the body is supported by one foot during the stance phase for that leg while they other leg swings through for the next step. these senior balance exercises and appropriate ways to progress to the next exercise can be learned by following the direction of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Depression And Senior Balance Exercises

Senior Balance Exercises Build The Foundation For Safe Fitness

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.combocci ball
Unfortunately many older adults suffer from depression for a myriad of reasons, but starting senior balance exercises can initiate a path to increased activity and mood elevation. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Depression in aging individuals can be a result of decreased quality of life, loss of significant relationships, loneliness, medication, limited mobility, health issues and other factors. On the other hand, medical researchers have shown that depression symptoms often improve with exercise. When a senior citizen has anxiety or depression, exercise seems like the last activity they want to do. Once they get going, exercise has enormous benefits both physically, mentally and emotionally. Current research on anxiety, depression and exercise shows that the psychological and physical benefits of fitness can also help to minimize anxiety as well as enhance mood. As an example, working out increases cardiovascular output, muscle strength and neurochemical release, which can help you feel better overall and more relaxed in particular.  To be specific, exercise can reduce depression in certain ways including:
-Release feel-good brain chemicals such as endorphins
-Take your mind off worries  by distracting from the cycle of negative thoughts
-Increase social interaction by meeting new people or interacting with others during an exercise session
-Develop healthy coping strategies to manage anxiety and depression through exercise rather than possibly coping with depression through alcohol, worry, negative thoughts, or simply ignoring the issue
The first step in starting a fitness program to alleviate depression is to build confidence and stability through practicing senior balance exercises.

Senior Balance Exercises For Safe Fitness Programs

Before embarking on a fitness program, it is wise to practice senior balance exercises to establish good stability with all movement patterns. Healthcare professionals like physical therapists, doctors and nurses suggest developing adequate steadiness with equilibrium routines before initiating a walking program, gym exercises, tennis, golf or other activities. Fitness routines that help to fight depression should involve getting your heart rate up. As an example, To elevate your cardiac output with a walking routine, it is recommended to begin with specific balance exercises that maximize your stability with walking on uneven surfaces like grass, hiking trails and uneven paths. One way to improve steadiness with walking is to rehearse tandem waling, where you walk along a line heel to toe. Walking in this narrow base fashion will enhance your balance skills needed to start a outdoor walking program to alleviate depression and anxiety. You can learn how to safely perform tandem walking and other senior balance exercises by following along with the Exercise For Balance DVD.
