Balance Exercises For A Walking Program

Balance Exercises To Start A Walking Program

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/balance exercises     Balance exercises are at great foundation to improve stability and get you ready to start a walking program.  Both balance exercises and walking are very effective to improve health. Most research on the benefits of exercise focuses on joint and heart protection. Studies clearly show that exercise helps to improve heart function. In addition, studies are reporting that even people at higher risk for heart disease may lower their risk of dying from it if they consistently exercise. Over time, evidence produced by researchers has suggested that our genes have evolved to favor being active. In other words, during prehistoric times, if a person couldn't move quickly and wasn't strong, that person died. Those who were fit survived to reproduce and pass on their "fitter" genes. Some researchers believe that with our current inactive lifestyle, these genes produce a number of bad effects, which can lead to many chronic illnesses.
The benefits of a walking program and stability exercises include:
  • Decreased body fat and overall weight
  • Improved metabolic processes -- the way the body breaks down and builds necessary substances
  • Improved movement of joints and muscles and decreased osteoporosis
  • Improved oxygen delivery throughout the body
  • Improved sense of well-being
  • Improved strength and endurance
No one is too young or too old to exercise. The United States Surgeon General recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, nearly every day. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises To Start A Walking Program

The best way to start an exercise program is to begin with balance exercises in a stable and safe environment. The first level of stability exercise is to stand with your feet in a narrow base of support and allow your ankles to wiggle back and forth, which is the body's natural balance reaction. The next progression of equilibrium exercises is to stand on an uneven surface like a couch cushion or pillow.  The unstable surface will make balancing more difficult and maximize your balance skills.  When your standing balance improves to a safe level, you can begin balance exercises with walking and ultimately progress to walking outside on uneven surfaces like hiking trails or sand at the beach.  To learn the proper balance techniques and exercises needed to progress to a healthy walking program, you can practice at home first with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Balance Exercises And Active Workstations

Balance Exercises Can Help Those Using Active Workstations

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/ Balance exercises can be one of the key components that help individuals who have switched to "Active Workstations". Please see     http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  More and more workers are trying Active Workstations at the office rather than traditional desk setups. Those workers include folks who suffer with low back pain, neck pain, midback stiffness and burning in the muscles near the shoulder blades or chronic overuse syndromes that lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. Active Workstations have also been adopted by younger workers who struggle with sitting still for eight to ten hours a day at their computers. Active Workstations can include using a big rubber ball ( Swiss Ball) to sit on, walking on a treadmill while working on the computer or standing at a raised desk while typing away. The makers of Active Workstations herald their products benefits as including reducing low back pain, weight loss and improving cardiovascular disease. Some recent studies, however, have shown that Active Workstations can decrease accuracy and typing speed by 16%, diminish fine motor skills by 11% and also lead to potential falls and injuries from falling.

Balance Exercises Can Help With Active Workstations

Balance exercises practiced before setting up an Active Workstations can be the answer to the dilemma. If an individual could spend three to five minutes each day on stability exercises before setting up an Active Workstations at the office, they may experience the success they are looking for in terms of lowering back and neck pain or reducing weight safely at work. By practicing equilibrium exercises consistently at home, they will be able to enhance their balance abilities naturally, which enables the brain to focus more on work activities and less on trying to stay stable. Stability exercises can be advanced by using balance exercise equipment like the Red Disc, which will develop higher level of balance skills. Consequently, when you are at work your balance abilities will be well honed and allow you to perform work skills without distractions of trying to keep upright.

Simple Balance Exercises And Sensory Feedback

Simple Balance Exercises Help Sensory Feedback

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/
Balance exercises are essential for many people. Balance exercises are critical for those individuals who have orthopedic problems like numbness from sciatic nerve issues, medical problems like diabetes, or neurological problems like peripheral neuropathy. As a whole, balance training is also important for individuals over the age of 60 years old, secondary to the natural aging process of our sensory system.  For those folks in the greatest generation, they may have already noticed the sensory deficits that occur with aging. As we grow older, each of our five senses becomes weaker and less effective. Our eyesight and visual acuity diminishes, making it more difficult to read a book or computer screen as well as making it difficult to see road signs in the distance. As we age, our taste buds become less definitive, making food seem bland and uninteresting. Many of us can attest to the fact that as our age increases our hearing capacity decreases. Additionally, for many individuals growing older in years is accompanied by a decrease in the sense of smell, which has its own set of consequences.  Finally, as with the other sensory organs, older individuals also have a diminished sense of touch. Unfortunately, that sense of touch between our feet and the floor as well as the sensory input of the movement at our ankles is critically important for balance abilities.  With a significant decrease in sensory input in our feet and ankles, there is a much greater deficit in balance skills and a significantly higher risk for falling.    Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises Improve Sensory Feedback

Balance exercises, therefore, are one of the keys to overcoming the sensory deficits that occur in our sensory organs as we age.  For most older adults, eyeglasses and hearing aids are imperative for daily functioning.  Along that same line, balance exercises are critical to perform on a daily basis to help overcome the loss of natural sensory input from the feet and ankles. Balance training with a knowledgeable expert in the balance field can help you learn the specific balance techniques that are needed to focus on and heightened the remaining sensory input available in your feet and ankles. By practicing balance techniques with stability exercises, you can maximize the sense of touch between your feet on the floor, which results in improving your balance and minimizing your risk for falling.  Now you can practice the appropriate balance techniques and stability exercises at home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Balance Exercises And Walking Abilities

Balance Exercises Help Walking Abilities

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/ In the life of a  Physical Therapist,  we are constantly observing two main factors about people that relate to balance exercises and the ease of moving through life. Those two criteria are posture and how a person walks. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Posture is critical because it significantly relates to back and neck pain as well as areas of muscle tightness and weakness. In terms of balance abilities, posture is key to how a person holds their body weight and if it is shifted forwards from poor posture or if it is correctly aligned with good, upright posture. Additionally, how a person walks is vitally important to both maintaining balance and preventing falls and staying active and enjoying life. When people walk very slowly or walk with an unsteady gait, they are at a higher risk for falling.

Balance Exercises And Steadiness With Walking

Balance exercises are an essential component of helping people walk with a much more stable and safe gait. Stability exercises can start at an easy level with just standing and centering ones weight to get a feel of what it is like to be steady. Balance training can progress to harder exercises with a smaller or more narrow base of support. Equilibrium exercises can be further advanced by adding unstable surfaces to stand on like a cushion or dog bed. As you improve your standing balance, you can start adding in walking exercises to enhance dynamic stability. Some walking exercises can include walking along a line. Walking exercises can advance with additional challenges such as:
  • Dance steps- forwards, backwards and sideways, crossovers
  • Walking in big and then smaller and smaller circles
  • "Figure 8" exercises to strengthen the core abdominal muscles that help stabilize your body
  • Obstacle courses
Be sure to start all balance exercises, especially walking routines, in a safe environment with a counter or table to hold on to. For more great ideas on balance exercises that you can do at home both standing and walking, get the Exercise For Balance DVD.

Balance Exercises And Rehab For Cancer Survivors

Balance Exercises Help Cancer Survivorsbalance exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/ Physical Therapists understand that Balance exercises are one of the strategic components that will help people recover more quickly after cancer treatments. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  During cancer treatments which can include chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and various medications, patients often experience:
- fatigue
- anemia
- generalized weakness
- pain
Additionally, some of the chemotherapy drugs affect the inner ear system, leaving the individual to battle dizziness and balance problems. Thankfully, now there are a number of hospitals and cancer speciality facilities that are offering follow up care including exercise, balance training, nutrition, massage and yoga. Results from the national cancer institute are showing that cancer survivors who receive rehabilitation services following their treatments experience a shorter recovery time, fewer days in the hospital and an improved quality of life.

Balance Exercises Following Cancer Treatments

Balance exercises can be a key component for recovery after cancer treatments. In specific, equilibrium exercises can teach the individual to stay steady and overcome the sensation of light-headedness or vertigo which can occur with damage to the inner ear hair cells with chemotherapy. Stability exercises can both help to enhance steadiness and build leg strength that is needed to get back on your feet safely again. A balance exercise program can be the first step to starting a general strength and flexibility regime to regain function and mobility for activities of daily living or for enjoying a walk with loved ones. Participating in an exercise program with other cancer survivors can also help to provide emotional support and understanding of the struggles they commonly face. If you or a loved one you know is rehabilitating from cancer treatments and would like to start a safe and simple balance exercise program, you can use the Exercise For Balance DVD at home or with a group of  fellow survivors.

Balance Exercises And Fall Prediction

Balance Exercises And Understanding Falls

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/ Balance exercises can help improve balance and reduce the risk and incidence of falling for our older population who are slated to fall more and more frequently with age. Medical researchers have seen that a senior's fall rate progresses as their age continues past 60 years old, due to the decline in each one of the balance system components. As we past the 60 year old mark, our eyes, inner ear vestibular system and sensory input from feet and ankles decline, which diminishes our balance abilities and leads to a higher fall rate. One of the keys to reducing falling is to understand falls and the criteria that creates a fall. Please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  The reasons why falls occur are complex, mulitfactorial and can include:
  • Being 60 years old or older
  • Having a dizziness disorder such as vertigo or light-headedness
  • Having a recent orthopedic surgery
  • Generalized weakness and specific leg muscle weakness
  • Difficulty with balance or walking
  • Vision problems (cataracts, macular degeneration, wearing bifocals)
  • Medical conditions that limit your ability to get around, such as Parkinson disease, diabetes, peripheral neuropathy or stroke
  • Conditions that cause confusion, such as Alzheimer's and  dementia
  • Depression or Insomnia
  • Taking more than 4 medications at the same time
  • Using a cane or other walking device
  • Home hazards including clutter--throw rugs, newspapers, or pets underfoot
  • Low blood pressure or seizure disorder

Balance Exercises Reduce The Fall Rate

Balance exercises have been proven to be the best way to prevent falls and the injuries that occur with falling. Stability exercises can be progressed from flat stable surfaces like a hardwood floor to unstable and more challenging surfaces like thick carpet or a couch cushion. Equilibrium exercises should be started in a safe setting, near a counter or a chair or a table that is stable and can support your weight should you need to grab on and steady yourself. A balance exercise routine can now be practiced in the comfort of your own home with an expert Physical Therapist with the Exercise For Balance DVD.
