Balance Exercises For Dancing

Balance Exercises And Dancing With The Stars

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/Dorothy Hamill
Balance exercises are wonderful foundation for many activities in life from basic moving about the home while cooking, cleaning, going up and down stairs or getting in and out of a chair.  Stability exercises are also the cornerstone of activities outside of the home including walking, hiking, golfing and dancing.  Currently, I have been enjoying the "Dancing With The Stars" television program, which includes beautiful dance routines.  I must say that my favorite performer this season is Dorothy Hamill.  I loved to watch her ice skate when I was in my youth. I was one of millions of viewers who cheered her on to her gold medal performance at the Olympics.  Now, I love to watch her elegant dance moves on the television.  I enjoy the behind the scenes look at their practice sessions, which exhibit a better understanding of the balance techniques that are used in every movement. Balance Exercises For Dancing

By practicing balance exercises every day you can develop steadiness, balance abilities, as well as the necessary balance reactions at the feet and ankle and strength in the lower leg muscles.  Stability exercises help you build a solid foundation of good balance to apply to any movement activities including dancing.  One of the difficult aspects of dancing is that the performer must exhibit the abilities to maintain static, postural steadiness while at the same time completing dynamic movements with good balance. The aspect of combining static and dynamic balance techniques is one of the drills I instruct my balance patients on every day in our physical therapy clinic. First, I explain basic balance techniques to help the individual employ sensory feedback from their feet and ankles, to maintain a stable upright posture.  Second, I instruct each patient on how to control their body’s weight-shifting during dynamic movements.  Finally, we put those two static and dynamic components together to develop good balance skills during more complex activities like dancing.  If you would like more information and the ability to follow a step by step balance exercise routine developed by an experienced Physical Therapist, please see the Exercise For Balance DVD.
