  The time has come to begin balance exercises in preparation for an awesome ski experience.  Balance exercises are essential to perform for many people at all levels of activities from the seniors who need to stay safe at home to the skiers and snowboarders to want to prevent injury and maximize their performance on the slopes. Thankfully, we just got another dumping of snow to provide an awesome powder day in Colorado's ski resorts. To ski in deep powder, there are certain balance abilities that are required to maintain an upright position and to carve through the heavier snow. For skiers attempting to plow through the powder, it is imperative to shift your weight posteriorly in your body towards your heels.  By shifting your weight posteriorly, you will elevate your ski tips, preventing the skis from being buried in the powder. For snowboarders, when you are on your heel edge, it is also critical to shift your weight to your back foot which will also elevate the front of the board and prevent you from doing on endo into the snow.     By performing balance exercises every day, you will be ready to hit the slopes for a fun and safe skiing or snowboarding experience.  Balance routines at home should include practicing centering your body weight in the middle of your arches. Additionally, you can work on stability exercises that involve controlling your weight shifting side to side and front to back. These exercises help you control your body’s weight shifting abilities as you perform each turn while skiing and as you tackle different snow conditions including hard pack or powder slopes.  You can progress your stability exercises by controlling your weight shifting on a balance board or the BOSU. Be sure to add leg strengthening exercises to your balance program to make the most of your skiing or snowboarding experience.
