Balance Exercises And Walking Abilities

Balance Exercises Help Walking Abilities

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/ In the life of a  Physical Therapist,  we are constantly observing two main factors about people that relate to balance exercises and the ease of moving through life. Those two criteria are posture and how a person walks. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Posture is critical because it significantly relates to back and neck pain as well as areas of muscle tightness and weakness. In terms of balance abilities, posture is key to how a person holds their body weight and if it is shifted forwards from poor posture or if it is correctly aligned with good, upright posture. Additionally, how a person walks is vitally important to both maintaining balance and preventing falls and staying active and enjoying life. When people walk very slowly or walk with an unsteady gait, they are at a higher risk for falling.

Balance Exercises And Steadiness With Walking

Balance exercises are an essential component of helping people walk with a much more stable and safe gait. Stability exercises can start at an easy level with just standing and centering ones weight to get a feel of what it is like to be steady. Balance training can progress to harder exercises with a smaller or more narrow base of support. Equilibrium exercises can be further advanced by adding unstable surfaces to stand on like a cushion or dog bed. As you improve your standing balance, you can start adding in walking exercises to enhance dynamic stability. Some walking exercises can include walking along a line. Walking exercises can advance with additional challenges such as:
  • Dance steps- forwards, backwards and sideways, crossovers
  • Walking in big and then smaller and smaller circles
  • "Figure 8" exercises to strengthen the core abdominal muscles that help stabilize your body
  • Obstacle courses
Be sure to start all balance exercises, especially walking routines, in a safe environment with a counter or table to hold on to. For more great ideas on balance exercises that you can do at home both standing and walking, get the Exercise For Balance DVD.
