If the bunion continues to worsen, however, there are a number of foot surgeries that can correct the problem. The specific type of surgery is called a bunionectomy. In general, a bunionectomy surgery involves taking a piece of bone from the toe and pinning the toe in a straight alignment. Following a bunion surgery, balance exercises and mobility exercises are important to perform to regain proper function and gait pattern.

Balance exercises should be started when the doctor removes the walking boot and allows the individual to resume normal weight bearing through the operated foot. Sometimes after the boot and weight bearing restrictions have been lifted, the person is still using crutches for balance and to minimize pain in the post surgical foot. If that is the case, balance training should be delayed until the individual can put weight on their foot more comfortably. Additionally, stability exercises should be initiated in a safe setting like near a counter or table for the person's maximum safety.
