Senior Balance Exercises And

Senior Balance Exercises And Leg Strength

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/
Senior balance exercises are a critical component of our daily lives as we get older.  For individuals who have passed the 60 year old mild marker, there are natural changes in the body that need to be identified and attended to. For instance, as we age our balance system components diminished in effectiveness, including our vision, inner ear vestibular system and sensory input from our feet and ankles.  Additionally, in our later years we also tend to lose muscle mass and overall muscle strength.  One muscle that tends to weak and over time is particularly important for our balance abilities.  That specific muscle is called the quadriceps muscle and is found in the front of our thighs. The quadriceps muscle is the most important muscle to help us with daily functional activities including walking, going up and down stairs and getting in and out of a chair.  When the quadriceps muscle weakens over time, our balance abilities are significantly affected. Senior Balance Exercises And Quadriceps Muscle Strength

Senior balance exercises are important for those folks in the older generation to perform on a daily basis as well as strengthening exercises for the leg muscles which will help improve balance and prevent falls.  Older adults experience difficulties with functional activities when they encounter weakening in their quadriceps muscles.  For example, an individual who lacks strength in their thigh muscles will perform what we as physical therapists call "rock of ages "to get out of their chair. You may have seen the “rock of ages” performance at a senior center nearest you when an older adult is forced to rock back and forth repeatedly in an attempt to catapult themselves out of a chair. Unfortunately, the rocking motion to get out of a chair creates a loss of balance once the person is on their feet, which often times results in falling forwards and sustaining an injury. Consequently, leg strengthening exercises as well as balance exercises are important to practice on a daily basis to enhance both stability and the leg strength needed to perform activities of daily living safely and to prevent falling and the injuries that occur with falling.  Thankfully, now you can practice your leg strength exercises  (specifically to strengthen the Quadriceps muscle) and stability exercises in the convenience of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.
