Motivation For Balance Exercises

How To Stick With Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/ Balance exercises are important to perform every day for folks who are older than 60 years old and for people who have medical conditions that result in balance problems. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Typically, stability exercises can take as little as a few minutes each day, but how do you stay motivated to keep up the discipline of practicing equilibrium exercises daily? Because exercise is critical to good health, weight loss, positive mental state and so much else, researchers have studied extensively on the topic of exercise. Medical researchers have concluded that there are three main psychological factors and cognitive tips that can enhance motivation for initiating and continuing an exercise program. The psychological factors involve how competent the person feels, how much control or choice the person feels and whether the activity includes socialization aspects.

Motivation To Continue Balance Exercises

Balance exercises are essential to perform every day and here are some ways to stay motivated. As the medical researchers have discovered, people generally stick with an exercise program when they feel competent with it. As for stability exercises, if you feel the routines are too difficult and they make you feel off balance and unsafe, then you know that the program is too difficult and needs to be modified to help build your confidence and competence. One example of modifying a balance exercise program is to start the exercises on a solid surface like hardwood floors, with your eyes open. Later as your balance abilities progress, you can advance your stability exercises to unstable surfaces like a balance board or soft cushion. Furthermore, researchers have determined that if a person feels out of control with their exercise program, they will be less motivated to continue. That is true of a balance routine. When beginning an equilibrium routine, you can increase your sense of control by holding on to a solid object like a chair or counter top. Over time, as your confidence builds you can progress your balance exercises by letting go of the stable object. Lastly, researchers have suggested that motivation to continue an exercise program can increase by adding in the socialization factor. By practicing balance exercises in a class at the senior center, YMCA or local gym, you can boost your enjoyment of the balance program and increase your motivation to continue with the exercises, which in the long run will improve your balance abilities and reduce the risk of falling and injuring your self.
