Balance exercises can be helpful to practice before heading out to the icy and snowy driveway to use a snow blower. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now With a hard hitting Winter upon us, many of us have experienced a snowy and icy past few months. Even this morning, I got up early to shovel the snow off my driveway and sidewalks. Thankfully, I was able to employ some basic balance techniques to stay on my feet and avoid slipping and falling. It is highly recommended to practice stability exercises before revving up the snow blower and tackling the snow outside of your home.

Balance Exercises For Snow Removal

Rehearsing balance techniques and balance exercises before heading out on the slippery driveway after a snow storm is highly recommended. The first step is to learn the stability strategy of centering your body weight evenly over your feet. By centering your body weight within the base of support of your feet, you automatically focus on the sensory input from your feet to the balance center in your brain. That concentration on sensory input aids in enhancing overall steadiness. Additionally, in icy or snowy conditions, it is recommended that you use a lower center of gravity and wider base of support, which will maximize your balance abilities. You can lower your center of gravity by slightly bending your knees as you navigate a snow blower or bend down in a squat position to scoop up a shovel load of snow. One benefit of using a snow blower is that you have an additional sensory contact through your hands and the bar on the snow blower. This extra sensory input through your hands to the balance center in the brain will also help you to be more stable as you navigate with the snow blower. On the other hand, one disadvantage of the snow blower can be the greater effort that is needed to circumvent corners. when changing direction with a snow blower, it is advisable to make the motion slow and steady and to concentrate on the sensory input from your feet to the ground as you make the turn. You can rehearse these stability strategies and balance exercises in the safety and convenience of your own home before stepping out into the snowy environment by following the direction of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.
