Senior Balance Exercises Help Prevent Wrist Fractures

Practice Senior Balance Exercises To Avoid Fractures

One way to limit the possibility of falling and sustaining a common wrist fracture is to practice balance exercises on a regular basis to enhance stability. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now The most common wrist fracture that can occur secondary to a fall is a wrist fracture, sometimes known as a Colles' Fracture.  The forearm contains two bones, the radius and the ulna. A Colles’ fracture is a fracture or break of the end of the radius bone in the forearm. Typically during a Colles' fracture, there is a displacement between the wrist and forearm, resulting in what is called a dinner fork or bayonet fracture because of how the fracture appears. In a Colles' fracture, the part of the bone that is closer to the hand,  the distal radius, is displaced dorsally, towards the top of the forearm. Often times, a Colles' fracture results in fragmenting of the distal radius bone. When there are fragments of the radius or significant angulation and deformity, the individual may require an open reduction and internal fixation or external fixation surgery to repair the fracture. If the fracture is small and has mild angulation and displacement, then the person may require closed reduction, followed by casting for 6-8 weeks. Colles’ fractures most often occur secondary to an individual falling onto a hard surface and breaking their fall with outstretched arms . Colles' fractures are most often seen in elderly people, post menopausal women or individuals with osteoporosis.

Senior Balance Exercises For Fall Prevention

Medical researchers have ascertained that by practicing balance exercises every day, a person can improve their steadiness and sensory awareness that will help to diminish the risk and incidence of falling and incurring a Colles' fracture. As a  physical therapist, we work on stability exercises with most all of our patients. Since the balance system components decline in function as we age for all of us, it is essential that we include routines that focus on controlling a person's weight shifting front to back and side to side. These weight shifting exercises enable the individual to control their center balance point, in order to keep them from falling if they are leaning forward.  Additionally, equilibrium exercises help to strengthen the person’s balance reactions at their feet and ankles, which enable them to respond appropriately to challenging balance situations, thereby decreasing the risk of losing their balance and falling. Now you can practice a professionally developed senior exercise balance program in the convenience and safety of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.
