Practicing balance exercises is essential for individuals who have been recently fitted for prosthetic legs. For decades, people with amputees have had to adapt to using mechanical prosthetic limbs for mobility. With these types of devices, individuals were limited in many ways including walking up and down stairs leading with their good leg, one step at a time. Recently, medical researchers have developed an advanced prosthetic device which his a bionic limb. The new prosthetic device is called bionic because of its ability to interact intelligently with a human. To use the prosthetic limb, there are electrodes attached to the skin of the remaining aspect of the leg that convert signals to produce knee and ankle movement on the prosthetic
device. The electrodes receive the signals from muscles attached to nerves in the residual limb, including those nerves that previous to the amputation transferred brain messages to the ankle.  As a result, the individual is able to use their brain signals to generate movement in the bionic leg. At the onset of learning how to power the bionic limb, the person must also practice specific stability exercises to maintain an upright position while moving in different patterns. Balance Exercises For Bionic Legs

One of the first steps to learning how to safely walk with a bionic prosthesis is to rehearse balance exercises. By practicing certain equilibrium routines, the individual with a prosthesis can build  adequate balance abilities for static stability before advancing to dynamic steadiness needed for walking and stair climbing. The initial exercise is to practice standing with feet shoulder width apart and body weight centrally located. Next, the person can control shifting their body weight from front to back and side to side. Often, folks who are learning to initially stand on their prosthetic limb can use upper extremity assistance by hanging on to parallel bars in the physical therapy clinic or holding on to a counter at home. Eventually, these individuals will be able to progress to learning to stand and walk without upper extremity assistance. Additionally, these stability techniques and balance exercises can be practiced in the convenience of ones' home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.
