Balance Exercises Help To Prevent Falls And Resulting Hip Fractures

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist At Exercise For Balance www.exerciseforbalance.com/home Balance exercises are one of the best ways to prevent falls and the hip fractures that result from falling. For more information, please see    http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now In general, medical professionals have been focused on fall prevention for seniors, especially older women. Because of the high incidence of falls among elderly women, there has been an enormous rise in hip fracture rates and subsequent health care costs. Researchers have correlated hip fractures with the level of osteoporosis. Apparently, however, there seems to be more to the story.

Balance Exercises Help To Prevent Falls

Balance exercises have been looked at as a way to prevent falls for older women. Additionally, factors that influence falling in seniors has been a topic of recent research. Boonen S, Pelemans W, Broos P in their study, Risk of hip fractures in the elderly: biomechanical aspects of the falling process, investigated the influence of HOW women fall. Age-related fractures are considered to be primarily the consequence of bone loss and increased bone fragility. In line with this dominant view on fracture etiology, prevention studies have primarily focused on pharmacologic interventions to increase bone density of the femoral neck. However, osteoporotic fracture occurrence is not entirely accounted for by bone strength but also related to the incidence and impact of falls. In fact, while more than 90% of hip fractures involve falls, hip fracture occurs in only about 1% of falls, suggesting that falls that cause hip fracture may differ qualitatively from other falls. These differences relate to the biomechanical aspects of falls, i.e., the energy that is ultimately transmitted to the proximal femur. In conclusion, hip fractures may be influenced by the way women fall, but balance exercises are the primary intervention to prevent falls initially.
